Background

Much of the Porsche 911's development resulted from the factory's racing programme, and it was the then Group 4 homologation rules, which required 400 road cars to be built, which spurred the development of 'Project 930': the legendary 911 Turbo. In production from April 1975, the Type 930 Turbo married a KKK turbocharger to the 3.0-litre RSR engine, in road trim a combination that delivered 260bhp for a top speed of 250km/h.

But the Turbo wasn't just about top speed, it was also the best-equipped 911 and amazingly flexible - hence only four speeds in the gearbox - being capable of racing from a standstill to 160km/h in 14 seconds.

The Turbo's characteristic flared wheel-arches and 'tea-tray' rear spoiler had already been seen on the Carrera model while the interior was the most luxurious yet seen in a 911, featuring leather upholstery, air conditioning, and electric windows.

The Turbo's engine was enlarged to 3.3 litres for 1978, gaining an inter-cooler in the process. Power increased to 300bhp and the top speed of what was the fastest-accelerating road car of its day went up to 257km/h.

More refined than before yet retaining its high-performance edge, the Turbo sold in the thousands, becoming the definitive sports car of its age. When Porsche revealed that the original 911 would be replaced by the new Type 964 in 1990, dealer stocks of the existing Turbo model sold out overnight.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with no bills, invoices or receipts for work carried out over the years.

But what it does have is a fully stamped service book, showing that the car was delivered new to Italy, was in Germany in 2002, moved to Belgium in 2006 and finally made its way to the vendor’s static display collection in 2007.

In all those years it has amassed just 59,000 kms and has managed to stay in extraordinarily good condition, inside and out.

With the proviso that we haven’t started or driven this car and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic appearance, we think this manual LHD 1987 Porsche 911 (930) Turbo looks to be in first-class condition and has the appearance of a car that has been very well cared for throughout its life.

The chassis number is WPOZZZ93ZHS000158.

Exterior

This metallic silver car with a dark brown/maroon leather interior looks very striking and has the unmistakably squat, aggressive stance and wide haunches that are the visual hallmarks of the 930 Turbo.

The paintwork is bright, shiny and in possession of plenty of depth and lustre.

The bodywork looks to have no dinks, dents, creases or folds of significance that we can see.

The panels are straight and even.

The trim, badging, lights, lenses and other exterior fixtures and fittings are all as they should be.

The wheels are equally impressive.

The ‘tea-tray’ spoiler is firm and the rubber is in good condition.

There is a slight scuff and a small kink in the inner rim of the passenger-side rear wheel arch, and a couple of paint chips on the front wheel arch on the same side.

There’s also a couple of scratches on the roof, some scuffed rubber at the bottom of the front valance, and a couple of thin scuffs on the driver’s side rear wing.

Interior

The interior of the car is equally impressive and is far more in keeping with the car’s low kilometres than its 35 years of life.

The leather upholstery is in excellent order, and the seats are showing very few signs of wear other than a couple of scuffs at the side of the driver’s seat cushion.

The door cards (the pockets of which currently contain the car’s number plate holders) are very good, as is the headlining, the dashboard, the steering wheel, gear selector and all other interior bits and pieces.

There are a few light scuffs to the dashboard padding above the instrument cluster.

We can’t make any claims about the functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start or drive the vehicle.

Mechanical

The undersides of this car look to have a decent amount of structural integrity.

The engine (what we can see of it), looks clean, dry and tidy.

History

This car doesn’t come with any history but it does have a fully stamped service book (most of which is with Porsche main dealers), with the intervals as follows.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

None of the paperwork shown in the gallery in any way constitutes any kind of licensing or registration certification.

The documents in the photo gallery are photocopies.

Summary

Provided that the engine and mechanicals prove to be as good as the rest of this exceptional vehicle, then this 1987 911 (930) Turbo - with a fully stamped service book - must surely be one of the best preserved you could hope to find anywhere.
