Background

Introduced in 2001, the 996 replaced the outgoing 993, taking two years to develop where it was intended for motorsport use. During development however, the GT2 was put on the bench from its sporting duties as Porsche concentrated on GT3 level.

The GT2 was then developed primarily as a road car, featuring a twin turbocharged, 3.6L flat six version of the GT3’s naturally aspirated powerplant. Generating 456-476hp, 472lb.ft of torque and a top speed of 198mph the GT2 was, like the 993 GT2, significantly different from other 996 variants with a wider and lower body all round with more aggressive nose and a larger rear wing.

Approximately 1287 996 GT2s were produced from 2001-2005 which makes this stripped out, fastest and most expensive offering from Porsche 911 lineup.

Overview

The Porsche was purchased by the current owner around 18 months ago to add to their collection but due to personal reasons the car is now back up for auction despite not having seen any miles during the current owner’s time. The car is in near mint condition with no damage, mechanical, bodywork or interior issues.

Exterior

The exterior of the car is in near immaculate condition, with very few issues if any. There looks to be a minor scratch just underneath the driver’s side rear quarter window. it does not look as though it has gone any deeper than the lacquered topcoat however, which should mean it can be easily remedied.

The 18-inch wheels are in great condition and have little to no areas of concern regarding marks, curbing or paint imperfections. They are also perfectly accented by the huge brake callipers finished in striking yellow to contrast the stealthy black paintwork.

The wider and lower track of the GT2 looks menacingly purposeful finished in the stunningly deep black paintwork and the controversial ‘fried egg’ style headlights have really aged well for this model. Everything works electrics wise throughout the car and the lights are no different.

The rear wing gives onlookers a sense of just how capable and quick this car is as the rest of the exterior silhouette is recognisably Porsche and to the uninitiated, could be any model from the manufacturers line up.

In summary for this car then, the exterior is in absolutely fantastic condition and reflects the care and attention the car has been given during its time with its owners. It should want for nothing and is ready to be enjoyed by the winning bidder.

Interior

Inside the GT2 there is a fine balance of modern conveniences and a certain level of comfort with the true nature of the car coming through in the bare backed leather trimmed racing seats. Luckily for the analogue generation this car comes with an old school manual ‘box giving you the joy of changing gears yourself with the lever sliding into your chosen gear in the most satisfying way.

The condition of the interior is much the same as the exterior of the car, in that it is fantastic and there is very little, if any damage, staining, fading, fraying, cracking or damage to note. Again, showing that this car has been treated with the respect it deserves.

The gear lever and the steering wheel, considering they see the most traffic regarding touch points of the car, have been kept in great condition with no scratches, fraying or damage of any kind. The seats have also seen little to no wear and tear on the fabric or the bolsters. The dash looks as new, and all the switch gear and dials look to be in great shape also. The drop away style dials start with the tachometer front and centre as favoured by race drivers worldwide with the speedometer, temperature gauges and fuel level gauges off to the sides and oil and batter gauges making up the five round faces of the information centre in front of the driver.

The rear luggage space behind the seats is in great condition also with the carpet looking as though it was from the factory. The rest of the carpet and door cards are in the same situation and there is a smattering of ‘GT2’ emblems emblazoned around the interior just in case you were to forget just what a savagely capable car you were driving.

All in all then, the interior is just as good as when it rolled off the factory line, not that hard to believe when you think of how little miles this car has covered since its first registration date in 2002 and the fact that the owners have clearly given this car everything it needs.

Mechanical

Starting off with the underneath section, let’s take a look in the engine bay, it’s hard to believe this car is 20 years old looking in here as there doesn’t seem to be any signs of use at all. Even the information stickers and hydraulic lifters are super clean, the components look as though they’ve never seen rain or wet, dirty roads, the rubber hoses all round look immaculate and the manifolds have got all their paint with no chips, scratches or even a whiff of a fluid leak.

It's common knowledge that the engine compartment of a Porsche is a tight squeeze at the best of times, not giving the best overall visibility to see all aspects of the powertrain. From what we can see in the bay, it’s all good news on the powerplant front for this GT2, short of stepping back in time, it’s nice to see one that’s been kept in such good order.

The luggage space in the front of the car is in good condition also and see little to no wear and tear to any of the carpets, plastics or rubber seals. Looking further underneath the car and in the wheel arches, there is not much to be seen apart from the plastic linings which are in good condition with no cracks or bits missing form a rouge flying stone. The floorplan underneath the car is just as clean and you can clearly see the factory undersealing efforts protecting from salt, dirt and grime accumulation from the roads, although as we said it really doesn’t look like this car has seen much of that.

Again, the pipework underneath the car is in good condition, there is the odd nut or bolt here and there with a showing of some surface rust, but this isn’t anything to worry about and won’t affect the running of longevity of the car in any way. The underside of the engine confirms the condition of the top side of the unit which, aside from some discolouration to some of the aluminium parts, which looks like some overspray from some sealing measures, is overall in good health.

All plastic farings underneath the car are in good condition and the frame rails aren’t bent or damaged in any way, this car has been looked after by Porsche garages since its first registration so you’d expect that it has been lifted safely and by its proper mountings as well as any precautionary measure taken to keep the underside as good as the topside.

Summary

This is a stunning car that has been kept in exceptional condition, it’s had its every need attended to during its 20-year lifetime, which, judging from the paperwork hasn’t been that much. It was at the time, the best version of the 911 that Porsche produced, and it hasn’t lost any of its charm to this day. We also think it’s in the best colour combination and it has such a huge, menacing presence on the road with the ability to turn heads consistently, as captured in our photo gallery below.

Our estimate for this car is £125,000 - £165,000.
