PLEASE NOTE THAT AN AUCTION PREMIUM WILL BE CHARGED, ON TOP OF THE HAMMER PRICE, OF 5% (+VAT IN UK AND EUROPE). FROM 16TH JAN'23 THIS APPLIES TO ALL AUCTIONS ON THE MARKET, AND FEES ARE CAPPED AT £5,000 (+VAT)

The Porsche 996 is the designation for the 911 manufactured from 1997 until 2006. It was replaced by the 997 in 2004, but the high-performance Turbo S, GT2 and GT3 variants remained in production until 2006. The 996 had little in common with the preceding 993, as it came with the first all new chassis platform since the original 911 and a new water-cooled engine. Technically, it was a major change, a complete breakthrough from the original car other than the overall layout. Other major changes included a sleeker body with a more raked windshield, and a re-designed interior along with new "fried egg" shaped headlamps (so called due to the amber coloured indicators) instead of previous "bug eye" headlamps.

Overview

This manual, 3.4L Flat-Six 911delivering 296bhp to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission and an upgraded limited-slip differential, rides on 18-inch Fuchs alloy wheels, and is finished in Vesuvio Grey metallic over a black leather and Alcantara-trimmed cabin. The factory specification includes dual-zone climate control, a Bose sound system, and a Becker Porsche CD radio. This right-hand drive 996 has ticked up just under 136,000 miles but has benefited from over £40,000 of modifications. Fitted by renowned Porsche specialist RPM Technik, the car comes with a GT3 bodykit, KW suspension, a MOMO steering wheel, and an adjustable Corbeau bucket seat. The original driver’s seat is also included, along with the factory steering wheel - both have been re-trimmed to match the custom interior elements. Included in the sale is the service book, V5C, a raft of receipts and invoices, both original car keys and the appropriately cherished registration ‘M200 CSR’. The vendor is a multi-car collector and big fan of 911s. We’ve been told that he bought it on a whim, enjoyed it over the summer months, but now it’s time for it to find a new home.

Exterior

The Vesuvio Grey metallic paintwork is in good condition and is reported to have been partly or fully resprayed in the past. There are some small stone chips to the front end and the door mirror covers, and a few very minor scratches on the bonnet. There is also a crack on the nearside front headlight lens, and the roof rack infills are slightly loose. There are a few small scuffs on the alloy wheels and there is a crack in the lower front bumper, as well as some scrapes to the underside. That being said, the spoiler and rear bumper and spoiler look to be in nice condition.

Interior

Moving inside, the cabin presents well, with both seats and the steering wheel having been fully retrimmed. There is some modest wear on the main touchpoints and some of the switchgear, in line with the car’s age and mileage. A small scratch is noted in the headlining above the front passenger seat headrest. There are no known faults. The car’s been fitted with a MOMO steering wheel, a short gear shifter and a retrimmed interior. The rear seats are in nice condition and the dashboard, door cards and headliner look to be in fine shape, too. It’s encouraging to see the boot comes furnished with a spare wheel and toolkit.

Mechanical

The engine has benefited from a full refurbishment and lightweight clutch and flywheel. Everything under the bonnet looks to be of sound integrity. There does not seem to be any evidence of leakage, the engine bay looks solid and things look to be in their right and proper place.

This 911 has been fitted with KW V3 suspension and a CSR chassis stage 1 and 2 with brakes and exhaust along with Wavetrac limited-slip differential and Performance Friction endurance racing brake pads. There is evidence of some mild surface rust on the exhaust but the insider of the wheel arches and chassis look to be in fine order.

History

This 12 owner from new 911 has clearly been well looked after and much loved as it comes with copious amounts of paper work. It has a very comprehensive service history and was last serviced in October 2021 at 134,317 miles by Porsche specialist RPM Technik. At this point, the vendor replaced the air conditioning compressor, both rear tyres and the oil sump seal, as well as repainted the rear wheel arches. Prior to this, RPM Technik carried out a major service in July 2020 at 128,446 miles, and in May 2017 at 120,250 miles. The engine was fully rebuilt by RPM Technik in early 2016 at a cost of around £19,000, which also included the installation of a lightweight flywheel, along with an uprated clutch, IMS and LSD. The most recent MoT test was conducted on 27 July 2021 at 133,817 miles, when the car passed first time with advisories for wear on the tyres, corrosion on both front link pipes on the brake callipers, and a slight oil leak.

Summary

The CSR upgrade package is a highly sought-after and respected conversion of Porsche’s popular 996-generation 911, described by Evo magazine as “a bespoke, finely focused 996 for the 911 purist”. This motor boasts a fully rebuilt engine with a lightweight flywheel and clutch, combined with a tastefully retrimmed interior. The subtly upgraded bodywork comes with a ducktail rear spoiler, meaning this 996 Carrera CSR promises to deliver an exceptionally focused and involving driving experience, and is ready to relish on the new owner’s favourite roads. The market has begun to appreciate what the 996 represents, with its compact dimensions and hydraulic steering. This car stays true to its heritage and provides a link back to the classics, and values now reflect that. As such, we think a prospective buyer will have to part with somewhere between £30,000-£40,000 to take this car home.
