Background
The Porsche 911 996 Carrera convertible introduced in 1998 brought about some major changes for the 911 line up. The air-cooled engine used in the model for the past 34 years was changed to a water-cooled unit (sacrilege we hear you cry) marking this car the end of the ‘one true’ 911 icon in their view. Porsche didn’t stop there however with altering the formula for longevity of the brand with a major re-design of the body shell. The 996 shared its ‘face’ with the entry level Boxster with the designer winning international awards for the car between 1997 and 2003.
The 996 received the water-cooled engine in a 3.4L displacement that put out 296bhp increasing to 3.6L in 2002 increasing power to 316bhp all through a 6-speed manual transmission. Despite the older Porsche 911 owners foretelling of the end of days with the rear engined icon, the 996 was received well by the press and owners alike and they continue to be excellent cars to this day.
