Background

The Porsche 911 996 Carrera convertible introduced in 1998 brought about some major changes for the 911 line up. The air-cooled engine used in the model for the past 34 years was changed to a water-cooled unit (sacrilege we hear you cry) marking this car the end of the ‘one true’ 911 icon in their view. Porsche didn’t stop there however with altering the formula for longevity of the brand with a major re-design of the body shell. The 996 shared its ‘face’ with the entry level Boxster with the designer winning international awards for the car between 1997 and 2003.

The 996 received the water-cooled engine in a 3.4L displacement that put out 296bhp increasing to 3.6L in 2002 increasing power to 316bhp all through a 6-speed manual transmission. Despite the older Porsche 911 owners foretelling of the end of days with the rear engined icon, the 996 was received well by the press and owners alike and they continue to be excellent cars to this day.

Overview

The owner prior to the current vendor purchased this Porsche in 2006 from a friend who owned the car for a few years previously. The first owner of the vehicle was a Porsche specialist who ended up doing a lot of the work on the car with his company ‘Purelys’ as you’ll see below in the ‘History Highlights’ section.

The Porsche was used by a husband and wife on the odd occasion as a weekend car and a tourer to either go down to a second property down in the south of England or the odd trip to European shores. These trips were only taken in the summer months and the car was always garaged over the winter months as the daily driver took over much of the commuting duties. This lack of use now prompts the owner to pass the car onto someone who will get the most out of the car from more frequent use as these cars come into their element when regularly exercised.

Exterior

First things first, as you may have noticed from the gallery of images below, the hood on the passenger side just above the window is not tight to the frame. The owner states this is a cable that needs replacing, the driver’s side unit has been changed recently but since that car has been sat the passenger side one now needs a replacement too. The fabric hood itself however is a replacement unit from a company down in Kent that comes with a glass rear window instead of a Perspex one and is otherwise in good condition.

The rest of the bodywork is in good condition, with the usual stone chips and odd scuff here on the front bumper, nothing too big to worry about and the level of wear and tear that is well within acceptable range for a 23-year-old vehicle. The hard top too is in great condition and apart from having a small scratch above the windscreen, it is a nice fit and it completes the exterior look of the car nicely.

The parts of the car that aren’t foldable of removable have lasted well over the cars seemingly easy 23-year life and reflect the amount of care, time and effort gone into keeping the car in great condition. There is little to no rust we can see on the exterior, and everything works as its meant to including lights and underneath and inside the vehicle which we’ll go into more detail in in the next few sections.

Lastly for the exterior summary then, the wheels and tyres, the latter of which the owner mentioned as was picked up on the last MOT, the rears tyres might need replacing soon as they were an advisory on the last test the car passed. The wheels themselves however look fantastic and the reverse fan style is one loved by many a Porsche enthusiast, there is little to no curbing or damage and the paintwork is lovely.

Interior

Open the door to the Carrera and you’ll see the sports, figure hugging seats that come as standard in the car, trimmed in a grey leather that apart from some scratches on the rear of the front seat’s hard back casing the seats are not ripped, torn or scuffed with the leather lasting very well. The rear seats are much the same and look as though they have barely been sat in during the car’s life.

The carpets are in good condition and from what we see, the headlining of the folding roof and the removable hard top are both in good condition. The dash is great too, it looks as though its near showroom fresh condition with very little wear, no cracking or bleaching from what is shown. The steering wheel, gear-lever and all dials, buttons and switches all remain in good condition with little wear and tear. The owner also wanted to include the fact that the original radio unit will come with the car boxed up should the owner wish to re-install it after purchase.

Mechanical

Before we head underneath the Porsche, let’s take a look in the boot and engine bay, starting with the engine bay. Opening the rear hatch, you’re met with the 3.4L flat six water-cooled unit and everything in here looks to be in good order although the packaging is so tight as Porsche fans will know, it’s hard to see every aspect of the engine from this side. We’ll take a closer look when underneath but from this side the bay looks to be all in order, there are no signs of fluid leaks from what we can see, and all electrical and plumbing work looks to be in good working order.

The luggage space at the front is our next stop and it is perhaps not surprising to see that the area is in good condition housing the spare wheel also in its covering. The rear wind deflectors are in here too and there does seem to be a small nick in one of the sides of fabric. Otherwise in the luggage space there is seemingly nothing to worry ourselves with as there are no obvious signs or corrosion or damage or excessive wear and tear.

Finally making our way underside then and the Porsche does not throw up any unwanted surprises, there are few if any signs of any corrosion to the body and major components and the underside of the engine looks to confirm the condition when looking at the unit from above. There is some wear to the front bumper, but this is well within the range of normal wear and tear. There is no damage to the chassis from what can be seen and all suspension components and rubber mounts look to be surviving well.

History

Currently, the 911 has a MoT certificate valid until December 2023.

The Porsche has seen 4 previous owners and has been regularly maintained by professional garages at a yearly interval since its first registration. This car has clearly been given the utmost of attention and care by its current and former keepers with a regular and maintained service history since its first registration in 1999. Judging by the service history, it has been looked after and remains to be in good working order. There has not been that many invoices for work needed over its 24-year life which speaks volumes of the build quality and care it has received during ownership.

Summary

This is a smart example of the 911 Carrera convertible that brought about some major changes to Porsche most popular line up, it still looks great after two decades of use and we’d imagine it will continue to perform admirably if the level of care it has received thus far is kept up.

Enthusiast owned and subject to easy and sympathetic use, this Porsche represents a great opportunity for people wanting their first dip of the toe into ownership of the Stutgart icon and it would also be a fine addition to anyone wanting to expand their collection.

We estimate this car will sell for a figure between £13,000 - £17,000
