Background

Following the controversial introduction of the water-cooled 996-generation 911, the 997 reverted to a much more conventional-looking, yet still instantly recognisable design, with a mixture of coupé, cabriolet and fixed-profile Targa bodies being available.

Powered by a water-cooled flat six engine in either 3.6 or 3.8-litre guises (for the non-turbo models), the 997 proved to be an absolute hit with enthusiasts and drivers alike, praised for its responsive naturally aspirated engine, usability, and interior, which still stands up fantastically well to this day.

For the C4S - such as the example we have here - the standard 3.6-litre engine was enlarged to 3.8-litres, the rear haunches widened (as per the C4S model tradition) and all-wheel-drive was fitted, making this a fantastically capable car indeed, at the expense of only 55kg extra weight.

So good was the 997 C4S, that Evo magazine gave it a five-star rating when new, calling it a “GT3 that has been to finishing school” and stating that the driving experience was “phenomenal… on the right road it’s devastating!

Overview

Purchased by the current owner in February 2018 as only the second owner since new, this 997.1 C4S Cabriolet is finished in the desirable hue of Lapis Blue metallic over a blue leather interior, this 911 was well specified from the factory, including a wind deflector, PCM, PASM, heated seats, cruise control and more, and has been nothing short of pampered in the last 15 years, as evidenced by its overall condition and low mileage of just 33,000.

In fact, so pampered is this C4S Cabriolet that the current owner keeps it in a heated garage on a carpet mat when not in use. Now that’s luxury!

Complete with a full OPC service history (initially Tonbridge and latterly OPC Portsmouth who are a Porsche Classic centre) and a general no-expense-spared approach to maintenance, this is a rare opportunity to obtain a low-mileage, fastidiously maintained and low-ownership 997.1 C4S Cabriolet in outstanding condition.

Exterior

Resplendent in Lapis Blue, the overall condition of this flat-six-powered Cabriolet is nothing short of astounding, thanks to a combination of careful use and meticulous ownership over the years.

Darker paintwork will always highlight its flaws far more so than lighter shades, but even so the paintwork on this 911 is in remarkable condition, wearing only a very light smattering of stone chips to the front end and rear wheel arch PPF, whilst the rest of the bodywork remains largely free of blemishes, save for two small marks above the NSF headlight, a small area of flaked paint on the NSR arch, and one or two other minor imperfections highlighted in the extensive photo gallery below.

Looking along the flanks of the car, we can see no signs of any accident or impact damage, and the owner is not aware of any accident history.

Up above, the folding soft-top roof is in excellent condition in keeping with the rest of the car, with only a few small marks to attest to it having ever seen the outside world. Similarly, below the arches, all four wheels are in fantastic shape, wrapped in correct Porsche N-Rated tyres - a great sign of fastidious ownership.

Interior

Moving inside, the good news continues unabated, with the leather seats being all but free from any signs of wear, with the front seats exhibiting only a few creases to attest to their use over the years, whilst the rear ‘bucket’ seats look to have been barely sat in, though there are one-or-two creases from spending an extended time folded down to make way for the Porsche wind deflector.

Elsewhere, the high-traffic touchpoints such as the steering wheel, door cards, centre console switchgear (a common wear point in 997s) and inner door sill areas are all in fantastic shape, with very little in the way of patina from years of use.

Up front, the ‘frunk’ is neat and tidy with no signs of heavy wear, whilst the complementary Porsche storage bags (for a top-up oil bottle, tyre kit and other miscellaneous items) remain present-and-correct.

The vendor states that there are no known faults with any of the systems, switches, displays or infotainment systems, whilst the power-folding soft top is in full working order, showing no signs of any hesitation, sticking or erroneous behaviour during our photo shoot.

Mechanical

At the rear, the 3.8-litre water-cooled flat-six engine appears to be in excellent health, starting with ease despite a long period of inactivity (always connected to a battery conditioner whilst in the owner’s heated garage) with no signs of any blue smoke or untoward noises - there is a first-start clip in the video below.

Once running, the engine is smooth and quiet, and behaved impeccably during our photo shoot, coming up to temperature, idling happily and showing no unwanted behaviours. The engine bay itself is typically compact, with little visual inspection access, though we could see no issues during our inspection, other than perhaps a little fluid staining around the coolant cap.

Underneath, everything looks to be in good order, and the most recent MoT exam - dated 01 December 2022 - shows a clean first-time pass with no advisory items at 33,264 miles.

The vendor notes that the car is - technically - due a service on a time-elapsed basis, but the car has been driven sparingly since the most recent service was performed, as shown in the stamped service book. Otherwise, there are no known faults with any of the mechanical or electrical systems on the car.

History

Benefitting from a full OPC service history from new, this 997.1 comes with an impressive paperwork trail, comprised of service history from OPC Tonbridge and then OPC Portsmouth with a bi-yearly service irrespective of mileage covered, along with other maintenance as-required, with a no-expense-spared approach to maintaining the car’s condition.

Eagle-eyed viewers will note that the previous MoT mentioned a leak from the coolant crossover pipes, which was addressed following the MoT exam. The RMS has also been replaced during the car’s time with the current owner.

As always, we’ve photographed all of the history and paperwork with the car, but for those looking for a quick highlights list:

  • V5 registered keepers document, showing only one former keeper from new
  • Two keys
  • Fully stamped service book with exclusively OPC history
  • Extensive invoicing showing miscellaneous works, coolant leak attention, RMS purchase, and other consumable items.

Summary

Finished in arguably one of the best colours for the 997.1 generation of 911s, benefitting from low mileage, low owners and a fastidious approach to maintenance and ownership, this is a rare opportunity to obtain a 997.1 C4S cabriolet in outstanding overall condition.

Offered for sale with an estimate of £35,000 to £40,000 you could be out on the road, the roof down and a flat-six soundtrack in your ears just in time for summer. Go on, you know you want to!
