The Porsche 911… if that sounds like music to your ears, and it probably will if you landed on this page, then we do not need to give you an introduction to the model series. After four very successful series named 911 (F), 911 (G), 964 and 993, Porsche introduced its newly developed 996 in 1997. Apart from sharing the badge and model 911 designation, the 996 series had little in common with its predecessor 993. The most notable changes to the new series was the all new chassis platform and a newly developed water-cooled engine, a major technical, and radical change, from the original concept of the 911. Another notable modification were the headlamps, quickly nicknamed “fried egg” headlamps because of their peculiar shape. The 996 remains the only 911 to date to feature these headlamps, all subsequent series went back to the more traditionally shaped units.

The Porsche 996 was initially available in a coupé or cabriolet version with rear-wheel drive, and later with four-wheel drive. The car featured a 3.4-litre flat six generating around 300hp. A Turbo version was introduced in 2000, the third year of production. A general overhaul and facelift in 2002 resulted in increased engine size across the board (3.6-litres) and a new, wider body look on the Carrera models.

Production of the 996 series ceased in 2006, when the 997 version was launched. A total of 175.262 cars were built, and one of those is one offer here today.

Overview

The 996 we are offering features silver bodywork over black leather interior, a classic but timeless colour combination that suits the 911’s curves well. The vehicle was first registered on the 14th April 2000 and is a French-delivered car. The first owner ordered his Porsche with a manual gearbox, a choice that represents a strong selling point today. The current owner purchased the Porsche in 2017 and at time of photographing, this example had done a total of approximately 140.000kms.

Exterior

The 911 is presented in good condition overall with usual signs of wear. Some stone chips and light scratches are visible a bit all over the vehicle. The wheels have some scratches also, though nothing of importance or which could not be repaired by a meticulous new owner. The four tires seem to still have enough thread left for many kilometres, though a replacement would be needed for an optimal drive. The lights are in good condition and are not tarnished and the glass surfaces are in equally good nick.

Interior

The interior of this example is upholstered in black leather and is in good original condition. The 996 had a totally re-designed interior compared to the previous iteration of the 911, and the charm of an early-2000 car can definitely be felt here. Compared to most modern cars, the interior design of the 996 is rounder and you will not find many sharp edges or straight lines here. In typical 2000s fashion, use of hard plastic was very common, though it is of superior quality and subsequently well preserved. The plastic material certainly has its traces of use, but nothing that would get us worried or that would need fixing; everything appears to be intact.

The dark grey carpets are nicely presented, and the same can be said about the seats. Especially the rear seating surfaces are in very good condition. They offer enough room for two children (maybe even on longer trips), but do not expect to be able to fit two adults here… The front seats show some more traces of wear, especially the driver’s side. Given the mileage and the age, this is to be considered normal. The avid observer will already have noticed the manual gearbox lever in between the seats, a desirable feature of this example.

Mechanical

As you would expect from a German quality vehicle, the underneath of this example does not show any signs of rust or other damages to supporting structures. Some scratches on the plastic covers are visible, most likely the result of tight parking entrances but nothing major or which would need repairing. The engine appears to be clean overall, though we did spot some signs of oil leaks on the panel which appears to be covering the gearbox. Please consult the picture gallery for details. The engine bay is clean and in original condition. We could not spot any non-original items. The sticker on the trunk lid mentions the original colour code as L92U, Arctic Silver Metallic, which is the colour the car still wears today. The same colour code can be found on another sticker fixed to the chassis in the trunk. There is not much else to say about the car’s trunk, it is nicely preserved and offers enough room for a medium sized travel bag.

History

The Porsche 911 on offer was delivered new to France in 2000 and has had a series of owners until it was purchased by the current caretaker in 2017. The vehicle is presented in matching colours and its last big service was done as recent as a few weeks ago on the 6th January 2023. It included a large service and a change of the brake fluid. An interesting feature of the vehicle is the manual gearbox, much more desirable than the automatic that was often specified originally. At time of cataloguing, the Porsche has been driven an approximate 140.000kms.

Summary

The Porsche 911 is a legendary sportscar that has been a reference in performance and design since its launch in 1964. The fifth 911 generation, code-named 996, was revolutionary in terms of design and engineering: it featured a new interior, completely new chassis and, a first for the 911, a water-cooled engine. Today, values of good 996 are on the rise, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to find a clean and well-maintained example. The car on offer has certainly done a lot of kilometres already but has always been well maintained and is good for many more years of enjoyment by its new caretaker!
