Background

Introduced in 1984, the Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 was the last incarnation of the ‘pure’ 911 and was a replacement for the SC model, made between 1978 and 1983.

The engine capacity was increased to 3.2-litres, Bosch fuel injection was fitted and power was up to 231bhp, at least for the European market. With a lack of driver aids such as ABS and power steering, the Carrera 3.2 is said to offer one of the purest 911 driving experiences, and that’s surely what we are all looking for?

Top speed is somewhere north of 150mph and with a 0-60mph time of under six seconds, this is a genuinely quick car even by today’s standards.

Rarest of them all is the ‘Turbo look’ wide body, known as the ‘Supersport’ in the UK. Initially only available on the coupe model, the lucky few would have had to place their order through the ‘Sonderwusch’ (special wishes) programme and stump up in excess of £10,000 over the base price.

In 1985 the programme was extended to both Cabriolet and Targa models and Porsche continued to offer the option until production ended in 1989 and the new 964 was launched.

Just 650 examples of the Supersport models made it to UK shores and they offered much more than just a ‘Turbo-look’ body. The following extras were fitted making this a standout 911 without a doubt; limited slip differential, upgraded Turbo suspension and brakes, wrap-around front spoiler, the famous ‘tea-tray’ rear spoiler and wider Fuchs alloy wheels.

Rarer still are the Targa variants. Only 220 right-hand drive examples were produced, and we are lucky enough to be offering for sale a prime example, and one with an extremely low mileage too.

Overview

The 911 Supersport was produced towards the end of the production run and was first UK registered in October 1989. We believe the car was delivered new a few months previously to a buyer in Singapore. He may have imported it.

Our seller has owned and cherished the car since acquiring it was back in 2006. He had known the car for quite some time as it belonged to a neighbour. When he found out she was emigrating and would not be taking the 911 with her, a swift bank loan was arranged, and the car soon safely tucked up in his garage.

He has enjoyed the car immensely, using it sparingly and ensuring that it was always maintained to the highest standard and properly stored when not in use.

He reports the car drives beautifully and unsurprisingly is a real head-turner. He is reluctantly selling as he no longer uses it a great deal and the funds are needed to upgrade his current family car.

A scenic route through the Cotswolds was selected for the drive up to our facility in Abingdon and our seller reports that there were moments on the exciting drive when he was tempted to turn around and cancel the sale. When you see the car in the metal you can absolutely understand why.

Exterior

Black is a notoriously difficult colour to keep in good order. Every little mark and scratch shows up so easily. Thankfully, the low mileage covered and careful ownership has ensured that this 911 presents beautifully.

Our seller reports that he has never painted the car and he believes the paint is all original. He has even had it checked with a paint gauge and was unable to find any anomalies. We are inclined to agree but can offer no guarantee.

You will find the odd mark here and there such as the stone chip below the offside front headlight. No bad for a 32-year-old performance car.

The Targa top is easy to remove for that wonderful wind-in-the-hair feeling. We do note the vinyl is starting to lift slightly in places and is slightly damaged near the leading edge.

The rubber on the windscreen surround has aged and is something the perfectionist might want to improve.

The iconic Fuchs alloy wheels set the car off nicely and these are in great condition with no obvious signs of any damage. Each is shod with a Continental Sport Contact tyre. As we always like to point out, matching premium rubber is generally a sign of careful and considered classic car ownership.

Build quality is up to the usual Porsche high standard, with neat panel gaps and doors that shut with a reassuring thud.

Interior

A quick look at the Certificate of Authenticity from Porsche confirms that the 911 was ordered with the optional sports seats with electric adjustment, covered in a mixture of black leather and leatherette.

Not only are they superbly comfortable, but they are also extremely supportive when getting a move on, gripping in all the right places. They are in super condition too, with just some gentle creasing which adds to the character of the car.

There are a pair of back seats, which children will enjoy and when not in use they fold flat to create useful extra luggage space.

A raft of gauges on the dash provides lots of information to the driver, and as is the Porsche way, it is the rev counter which dominates.

Our seller upgraded the sound system, so tunes are now provided by a Sony radio/CD player with Bluetooth connectivity. The original Blaupunkt radio/cassette is still with the car and could be reinstated.

Carpets are in good order, with just a good vacuum to the driver’s footwell required.

The front boot space is surprisingly generous and is covered in spotless black carpet. There’s a space saver spare wheel, with compressor to inflate should it be needed. There’s also the Porsche toolkit, though sadly the inner lining of the pouch has started to disintegrate.

Also included with the 911 is a C-TEK battery trickle charger, ideal if the car is to be left undriven for a prolonged period of time.

Mechanical

We always include plenty of pictures of a car’s underside and that is most definitely the case here. We have to say we are mightily impressed. It all looks to be in great shape with nothing untoward we can spot. Take a look for yourself!

The engine compartment is equally impressive, that air-cooled 3.2-litre engine a sight to behold. All the signs of careful maintenance are there.

The car starts "on the button", and our seller reports that it drives without fault. You can hear the engine in all its glory in our walkaround video clip. Music to a petrolhead’s ears.

History

The car comes with its original book pack containing amongst other things the driver’s manual. The service book is present and correct and shows a raft of stamps from main dealers and specialists.

There is an assortment of MoT certificates and checking the online history with the DVLA helps to confirm that the mileage is indeed genuine. The MoT history shows nothing of any concern and a small oil leak picked up in 2021, was immediately dealt with by our conscientious seller.

Also amongst the paperwork are a selection of invoices which of course can be perused in the picture gallery.

You will notice an invoice from Porsche shop dating from April 2019 for a service, the car having covered few miles since.

In February of this year, the aforementioned oil leak was dealt with, the issue being sorted by replacing a cam feed line.

The clutch was replaced in 2014, the bill for £1,409.15 detailing the work carried out.

Summary

This rare 911 Carrera Supersport Targa is really quite outstanding. Presented in excellent order, fresh from the long-term ownership of an enthusiast owner, we know there will be plenty of interest in this eminently collectable and usable car.

Summer is just around the corner, making this Targa topped 911 ideal for exciting open-air adventures.

All this Porsche loveliness does come at a price, and we estimate a sale price of between £80,000 and £90,000 will be achieved.
