Background
Following the controversial decision to water-cool the 911’s engine for the first time in the 996-generation cars, Porsche introduced the more conventionally styled - but still water-cooled, as every 911 has been since - 997-generation 911 in 2004, which lasted in production across two generation (.1 and .2 respectively) until 2013.
The 997.1 cars were largely mechanically similar to the preceding model, featuring a 3.6 and 3.8-litre version of the classic water-cooled flat-six engine, but receiving a more recognisable and conventional styling package, doing away with the ‘fried egg’ headlamps of the 996, along with a major interior overhaul which still looks remarkably fresh to this day.
So good, was the 997, that even Mr Jeremy Clarkson himself - a known detractor of Porsche’s and the 911 in particular - stated that the 997 would “make love to your fingertips, and stir your soul” which is high praise indeed from the man that stated every 911 is simply a Beetle in a fancy outfit!
