Background

Following the controversial introduction of the water-cooled 996-generation 911, the 997 reverted to a much more conventional-looking, yet still instantly recognisable design, with a mixture of coupé, cabriolet and fixed-profile Targa bodies being available. Powered by a water-cooled flat six engine in either 3.6 or 3.8-litre guises (for the non-turbo models) the 997 proved to be an absolute hit with enthusiasts and drivers alike, praised for its responsive naturally aspirated engine, usability and interior, which still stands up fantastically well to this day. That soon became clear not just by the great reviews it’s got over the years, but also with happy customers across the globe vouching for 997’s abilities. The car was available from 2004 to 2012 and was replaced by the 991. So good was the 997 C4S that Evo magazine gave it a five-star rating when new, calling it a “GT3 that has been to finishing school” and stating that the driving experience was “phenomenal… on the right road it’s devastating!”

Overview

This Carrera 4 Targa has surprisingly low mileage for a 16 year car, less than 48,000 on the clock, partly due to spending it’s first five years on Jersey where cars tend to collect miles at a slower pace. It was imported to mainland UK in 2011, all paperwork and duties being taken care of at the time.

Since then it has mostly been cared for by an independent Porsche garage who have taken care of servicing and maintenance. The owner has enjoyed driving this car and has kept it for a few years, but now needs a sports car that can carry four adults so reluctantly is parting with the Porsche. Please note, the numberplate is not being sold with the car.

Exterior

The overall condition of the car is very good. The dark metallic blue paint has a deep gloss and suits the shape of the 911. There are a few marks in the finish, a small ding with a scratch to the nearside front wing and various stone chips and very light scratches around the body. The front bumper was repainted in 2014 after a very minor bump 2014 which was reshaped but the new paint has gone flat over time.

Being a Targa, it has the full glass top which looks special, and is in perfect condition. Glass flows from the windscreen, across the roof and into the tailgate seemingly in one continuous piece. Combined with the frameless doors it feels incredibly light and airy inside. There is a stone chip on the drivers side of the windscreen, but outside the swept area so not an MOT issue.

The 19” alloy wheels fill the arches well and are wearing recent Michelin Pilot Sport tyres all round. There is some curb rash on the wider rear wheels, the fronts looking unmarked..

Interior

The cabin is swathed in high quality tan leather and carpet and looks stunning. The hide of the drivers seat has some patina with light creasing and some very light discolouration, most of which would likely be rectified with some good leather cleaner and feed and the rear seats, otherwise unmarked, have some indents from objects resting on them.

On the floor are matching original Porsche carpet mats which have protected the light coloured carpets well, as they have no wear and almost no marks.

The leather continues to the dashtop, dashboard, centre console and steering wheel, handbrake and gear shift. It is all is lovely original condition, giving the cabin a sense of luxury and occasion.

Mechanical

With so much of the underbody clad in plastic and the engine hidden in the rear its not easy to see much of the cars structure or mechanical parts, but what can be seen looks straight and solid, only some surface corrosion forming on the scraped surface of the jacking points. The engine starts on the button and revs incredibly willingly, and the transmission is the desirable six speed manual which snaps across gears cleanly and decisively making driving the 911 so much more entertaining and rewarding.

History

Since living in South East England, the car has been in the car of Day and Whites and La Rose Porsche who have undertaken regular maintenance, so oil services and other jobs have been carried out as required This year it has had a large amount of maintenance carried out. In April new rear springs and Bilstein rear dampers fitted, and July a new exhaust manifold was fitted, and expensive job thanks to the labour involved.

Summary

This is a beautiful car in very usable condition ready to be driven and enjoyed. There are a couple of minor cosmetic issues which could be rectified if desired but by no means essential.

Being a Targa and a manual this is a fantastic car for touring and enjoying road trips and adventures, a car that want s to be driven.

We estimate this car to fetch between £27,000 - £30,000 in auction.
