Background

The 996 is actually a bit of a key moment in 911 history, with the company moving into a new millennium and having to adapt to the times. Introduced in 1997, the 996 ran to 2004 (the high-performance versions till 2006), it was the first all new chassis platform since the original 911 with a new water-cooled engine. In technical terms it was a major change from the original car, however it kept that Iconic styling the Stuttgart fans know and love to this day. Talking of the styling, the new platform allowed for a sleeker body with a more aerodynamic profile, redesigned interior and perhaps the most noticeable feature of the front end, the ‘fried egg’ headlights instead of the previous ‘bugeye’ headlights.

Aside from the radical new change from the original 911 to the new platform the 996 was based on, the car was also responsible for saving Porsche from financial issues. Back in the 1990’s Porsche was in trouble, their signature flat 6 was reaching its limits of potential and the emission landscape was changing threatening to phase out old designs. Porsche teamed with Toyota to improve manufacturing processes as well as introducing the 996 alongside the entry level Boxster, bringing down manufacturing costs and opening up the target audience for its products. The 996 then was a 911 for a new millennium with new technology, a newly revived factory and a new engine, it was the Porsche model that signalled changes in Porsche and the continued dominance of the sports car market.

Overview

This 996 which has a BHP of 450 has been with the current owner since 2010 and is driven occasionally as the owner lives abroad, which would explain the 53,529 miles the car currently has. That’s not to say that it’s sat in a garage all its life on trickle charge, but due to the ongoing global pandemic and travel difficulties, the car is currently getting even less use and the owner feels it’s only fair to the car to move it on. The 996 is being taken care of by a friend of the owner whilst its being garaged, it is covered and charged to keep it going, as well as being run periodically to ensure the engine and mechanicals don’t seize, which can be a problem on some Porsches.

The 996 comes with an extra set of wheels and tyres to compliment the style 50X wheels that come on the car, as well as the toolkit from factory as well as a spare in the front. The interior is Metropol blue with red piping and the exterior paintwork is Lapis Blue metallic. The car has been well looked after and has been maintained and serviced by the same main dealer garage it was purchased from.

Exterior

The Lapis blue metallic paint looks to still have its deep shine, there are very few marks on the paintwork, but it is a 19-year-old car and there is some minor wear and tear. The main area of note is the front bumper which looks to have a localised area of stone chips just left of the numberplate. Apart from that area, the rest of the car looks to be in fantastic condition with the rest of the bodywork looking very fresh. The wheels look to be in excellent condition also with no signs of curbing or lacquer peel, they are also shod in Pirelli P zero tyres, which are an exceptional tyre choice for the 996.

The rear wing and the various assortment of splitters and vents all stand up to inspection very well and those wonderful exhaust tips really add to the aesthetic of the rear end. The sunroof looks to be in great condition also with no corrosion or damage, unsurprising with the car being kept inside for the last decade.

Interior

The interior of the 996 looks to be near immaculate as well, the leather on the seats has no rips, tears or sagging of the side bolsters. The main touch points and high traffic areas have little to no sign of excess wear, the steering wheel leather is in great condition and the gear lever and gaiter look to be in good condition as well. All electrics inside work with the dash lighting up upon starting to inform you that the engine and drivetrain is healthy and ready. The screen in the centre console works well and displays the sat nav screen as well as the radio information. The car even looks to have the PCM internal phone system which is the pinnacle of 90s retro cool.

The front storage area is very well presented and under the carpet, where the spare is stored, also looks to be in good condition. The spare is not the same style as the wheel on the car and comes in a funky orange colour with what appears to be a new tyre, so you won’t be caught out, should you need to change a wheel on the roadside.

Mechanical

The underside of the 996 looks remarkably clean for a 19-year-old car, but the fact its garaged and has less than 60,000 miles would have done wonders for keeping the structural integrity of the car in top condition. Porsche is very good at sealing and rust proofing their cars from factory generally so this one should be no exception.

The only things we can see from our inspection is the usual issue with the jacking points having some surface rust, this is down to not using rubber covers on the lifts when jacking the car. This is not usually structural and can usually be solved with some rust treatment and some paint to prevent further deterioration. There is some very minor surface rust on some of the components underneath, but this Porsche has survived particularly well up to this point, and if these minor things are the only things to worry about then it’s a very good sign indeed.

History

The car has been serviced by a Porsche centre in Chiswick during the Owners time with the car and indeed since its delivery in 2002. The history file documenting the service and work carried out there is comprehensive and having one main garage service a car over its life makes for tracking down any history for the car a doddle. The car has three previous keeper and one number plate change to X50 XSS, which will be included in the sale. The current MoT expires on 25/08/2022, and the car has had over £2,000 spent on it in 2019 showing from the history file.

The car has its owner’s manual, a customer care handbook, the 10-year body guarantee from Porsche, a vehicle history check and two keys.

Since 2015, per the MoT certificates, the car mileage is:

• 2015 to 2016 the car did 408 miles that year.

• 2016 to 2017 the car did 2,321 miles that year.

• 2017 to 2018 the car did 1,925 miles that year.

• 2018 to 2019 the car did 503 miles that year.

• 2019 to 2021 to date the car did 7 miles that year which took it to 53,522 miles (when Covid restricted all travel.

The most recent Porsche service in 2019 was done with a mileage of 53,164 and the 2019 MoT was done at 53,522, which is 358 miles in a period of 3 years.

The vendor says: "the only other point is that the air filter, oil and oil filter were changed every time."

Summary

The 996 is a hugely significant car for Porsche as a manufacture. It was the car that brought about shifting change to Porsche as a brand, it was the car they forged into the new Millennium with. It was also the car that played a big part in getting the company out of its financial troubles, as well as being the biggest shift in the iconic sports car since its original iteration. It was the first move to a water-cooled powerplant in the 911 sports car as well as having a new body and platform in which to develop to the 911 we see today. As we race toward another seismic shift in the automotive industry and another chapter in our love affair with the car, we can chart these key moments back in history and the 996 will be written in the history books.

This example has been well cared for clearly, being serviced and maintained by the same dealer that sold the car as its time of production. People who own Porsche’s tend to take exceptional care of them as they demand it, this model is one of those and anyone who purchases the car should rest easy in the thoughts that they have purchased a good ‘un.

Our estimate for this car is £40,000 - £50,000.
