Background
The final fling for the ‘classic’ 911, the 3.2 Carrera was introduced in 1984 as the replacement for the SC series, and - at the time - Porsche claimed the car was reportedly ’80% new’ in comparison to its predecessor from a mechanical standpoint.
Over the rear wheels sat an enlarged 231bhp 3.2-litre, air-cooled naturally aspirated flat-six engine, featuring a higher compression ratio, new inlet manifold and exhaust systems, and the crankshaft from the 3.3 930 Turbo. Early cars (up to 1987) utilised the same 915 transmission carried over from the SC, whilst post-87 cars gained a new five-speed, Getrag sourced transmission.
Available in three body styles, namely the coupé, cabriolet and Targa, the 3.2 Carrera is virtually indistinguishable from its SC predecessor from an aesthetic point of view, though a keen eyed enthusiast will note that the front fog lights are integrated into the valence, though a minor interior facelift was carried out in 1986.
