Background

Introduced in 1984, the Carrera 3.2 was the replacement for the SC series, reviving the Carrera name for the first time since 1977. It was the last version of the original 911 where all subsequent models were given a substantial makeover. The higher displacement engine, a 3.2 litre horizontal flat six, was cited to be 80% new at the time and gave the car 207hp with a 0-60 time of around 5.4 seconds.

The main draw with these later versions of this iteration of the 911 is the engine but more importantly the Bosch Motronic engine management system which provided reliability and peace of mind along with more efficiency from the unit. These later version of that run of the 911s do have a bit more weight than their earlier counterparts but this is offset by more power.

Overview

The Porsche was purchased by a serial classic car collector as a good example needing a little tidying up. The current owner has had the car now for around a year and after giving the Carrera an aesthetic makeover the car now sits around more than the current owner would like, hence the sale.

The idea behind the car was to develop its look into something resembling more of a 1974 911 RS 2.7 with the Targa roof, and the colour combination certainly gives this car a timeless look. After buying all the parts and having them fitted, the car now sports a new look and hopefully it can be given a new lease of life by its new owner by being used regularly. The car has a current MOT, valid until 01/03/2023 so should have plenty of life left in it for the new owner to enjoy.

Exterior

The exterior of the Porsche presents very well, the paint work looks near immaculate with no rust showing on the wheel arches. Filling the wheel arches are the reconditioned Fuchs alloys which complete the black on white look of the Carrera.

The recent work the current owner has completed on the exterior aesthetics have really paid off with the Carrera now looking its best with some period styling tweaks. The rear light bar at the back is in good condition with no cracks in any of the lenses, the bumper overriders look good too with no fading or splitting. The Targa top is in fantastic condition and really adds something special to the appeal of the car.

The engine cover grille at the rear is in good condition as well with no cracks or fins missing, and all lights around the car are free from cracks, condensation or hazing. The wing mirrors and other chrome items are new and add the final touch of shine to the exterior of this handsome Porsche.

Interior

The interior is beautifully 80’s and was presumably modelled on the businessmen of the time’s blue pin stripped suits. The seats are in fantastic condition and have half vinyl, half fabric in a blue colour with a white pinstripe.

The dash materials and general condition throughout the interior is fantastic with very little if any damage to see. There is a modern radio head unit that might not be in keeping with everyone’s tastes, but it hides itself quite well and shouldn’t cause any issues as it allows you easy listening to your favourite radio station.

The steering wheel is the big draw here however, being a Prototipo unit, you know it’s going to be a high-quality product. The wheel, along with the gear lever have very little wear and tear, the gear knob is a new item as well. The bezels on the dials in the dashboard have been replaced recently so are near new items. Even the floors underneath the carpets look to have survived very well as their condition shows. All door cards and upholstery is free from rips, tears and stains. The car also has a remote-control alarm system and an aluminium roll over bar.

Mechanical

Looking in the engine bay first and the powerplant itself looks to be in good visual condition with no wires, rubber hoses or components looking damaged or missing. This is then backed up with the owner’s comments of it being completely sound mechanically. The car has recently had its brakes done, which is reassuring to hear considering the engine looks to be in good health.

Heading underneath the body, the floors all look to be in good health with nothing more than regular road grime to see. Suspension components all look in good condition and the rubber mounts we can see aren’t split or cracked. Our driving notes say that the car does pull to the left, but this could be due to a tracking issue.

History

The car has been involved with some sort of incident during its 35 years on the road, which has categorized it as a Cat C in the insurance documents, it is believed to have happened around 2005. The work has been completed on the vehicle to a very good standard and the current owner assures us that there is no evidence that anything is out of the ordinary structurally or mechanically. The car has had lots of work completed on it in the last year alone to give the car a new look, these and more are summarised below.

Summary

This is a very handsome car given a recent makeover to ensure it keeps turning heads wherever it goes. The timeless colour combination, fantastic condition inside and out along with the good condition of the car mechanically should sway any classic Porsche fan to part with their hard-earned disposable.

It has clearly had significant financial resources spent on it to get it looking this good and as the current owner concurs, it’s a shame it is sat on the driveway rather than being out and being enjoyed. If you’re looking for a cheaper version of the 911 RS 2.7 but with all the looks then this could well be the perfect car for you.

We estimate for this Porsche 911 to reach anywhere between £35,000 - £50,000.
