PLEASE NOTE THAT AN AUCTION PREMIUM WILL BE CHARGED, ON TOP OF THE HAMMER PRICE, OF 5% (+VAT IN UK AND EUROPE). FROM 16TH JAN'23 THIS APPLIES TO ALL AUCTIONS ON THE MARKET, AND FEES ARE MIN €720 / MAX €7,200.

From 1969, the new model that in 1963 had taken its place at the top of the Porsche's range (a step higher than the 356 with which the company's adventure began in 1948) was also offered in the sporty E and S versions with a new 2.2-litre engine. In the raunchier Super variant, the air-cooled six-cylinder boxer, powered by a new mechanical injection system, reaches the power output of 180 hp: a full 55 compared to the "base" 911 T 2.2. The engine benefits from numerous modifications, including larger valves, new connecting rods and new manifolds, as well as all-new forged pistons. Other interventions are expressly aimed at lightening the car: the most important - and contributing to a weight loss of about 60 kg - consist of a new aluminium-magnesium alloy monoblock and the light alloy construction of some body parts. The five-speed transmission is sporty, with first gear in the lower left, while the clutch is reinforced with an oversized disc.

Overview

This Porsche 911 S 2.2 coupe is a 1970 coupe finished in an elegant Burgundy red. Information in the company's production records confirms that the chassis number (9110300788) and engine number (6301074) both match the original equipment. The odometer signs a mileage of 10,356 km.

Exterior

The Porsche benefited from a total restoration of about ten years. As the pictures show, the car is in very good order. The paint is scratch-free and perfectly glossy, with uniform colour on all body surfaces. The bumpers lack the typical chrome-plated rostrums with rubber guards, but they can be found without difficulty (original or compliant spare parts are quite easily available). Corresponding to the original model specifications are the chrome engine cover grille; wide door sill strips; round, chrome-plated outside rear-view mirror; exterior door handles with a push lever on the inside ("pistol" grip). All chrome and rubber parts are in excellent condition, without signs of wear. Finished in silver and not gold as originally, the rear centre-mounted horizontally positioned "911 logo" is correct. As new are the shiny Fuchs alloy wheels, the unmistakable calling card of the sportiest Porsche 911s of those years.

Interior

Originally, the upholstery of the cabin was beige (Porsche code 312424), but during the extensive restoration this Porsche benefited about ten years ago, the original front seats were replaced with a pair of Recaro textile leather sports seats with adjustable headrests. These are quite common seats, on Porsches of that period, and were at the time chosen by drivers who wanted more body restraint in sporty driving. They present the same finish as the two little rear seats. That said, it is evident from the pictures that the interior is in very good condition: no signs of wear on the dashboard, the door panel linings, the headliner or the lower parts of the upholstery. Also impeccable is the dashboard, with the five-element circular instrumentation typical of this model, and the classic four-spoke steering wheel, with the Porsche crest engraved in the centre.

Mechanical

The underside is in very good order in every part and shows no trace of rust, even superficial corrosion. The engine compartment appears tidy and very well cleaned, with no hint of corrosion, not even superficial. From the filter box to the engine cooling fan, from the plastic piping to the electrical component cables, everything appears intact and well-preserved. According to the current owner's report to us, the engine was given a complete service, including the replacement of the primary fluids and related filters, just a year ago. The car is therefore ready to go and does not require any imminent maintenance work at the moment. An original tool kit is accompanying the car.

History

This Porsche 911 S 2.2 coupe was built in 1970 and was first registered in Italy. According to what the seller told us, during its history the car was owned by three previous persons. After being ex officio disbarred following the non-payment of some stamps, it was re-registered (again with Italian license plates). About ten years ago it underwent a thorough restoration involving the mechanics, bodywork and interior.

Summary

"Pre-bumper" 911s - those identified, according to version, by the letters A through F and produced between 1963 and 1973, recognizable by their bumpers that are flush with the body, and not shock-absorbing like the later G-series models - are among the most popular with Porsche enthusiasts. The version with the 2.2-litre engine, and particularly the higher-performance Super, half a century later is still a very fast and snappy car, capable of satisfying even the most experienced drivers. The example for sale, in particular, in addition to presenting itself in excellent shape, boasts a very elegant and sought-after exterior-interior colour scheme, which enhances the sporty and elegant shapes, unique in their kind, of this timeless car. A great classic that will never go out of fashion.
