Background

Designed by Erwin Komenda, the Porsche 356 is a lightweight, rear-engine, rear-wheel drive, two-door sports car available in both hardtop coupe and speedster configurations. Production started in 1948 at Gmund, Austria where Porsche built roughly 50 cars.

In 1950, the factory relocated to Zuffenhausen, Germany, and general production of the 356 continued until April 1965. The 356 was built for another year after its replacement model was introduced, a little thing called the 911.

76,000 356s were built and roughly half of them have survived to the present day.

Overview

The final version of the 356 was the 356 C, introduced in 1964. The greatest change was a move from rounded hub caps to flat ones in order to accommodate newly standard disc brakes at all 4 wheels.

This is a charming project that will require some restoration efforts. Parts we know to be missing include: the windshield, and door panels.

Exterior

This 356 C is finished in a deep shade of burgundy, and as good as it looks, there are a few noticeable problem areas. The most obvious among them is that the car has no windshield. There are bubbles in the paint up front on the hood, and the passenger side rear fender has several chips.

The car does have a rear mounted luggage rack, emphasizing just how enjoyable touring is with these cars. There are several chips in the paint around the edges of the engine bay as well as the rear of the car in general. Please note, the engine looks in great condition compared to its surroundings.

Interior

The interior is worn but is consistent with the state of the car being an exciting project to resurrect. The door panels on both sides are not present, and there appears to be some degree of surface corrosion on the doors. The floor could use a deep cleaning.

The black leather seats, while not showing any holes or tears, are creased from regular use, but could be polished back to life. The dash pad could benefit from some polish as well.

The dashboard itself could use a scrub down, and there appears to be a large scratch to the right of the clock. The epoxy over the steering wheel boss appears to be cracked.

Mechanical

There is no major damage to be noted on the undercarriage. There is a bit of surface corrosion, but it is apparent that this 356C was stored in the appropriate climate.

History

The history of this car is brief, but important, due to the documents available to us. The car has been entered into the 356 registry as being for sale by a previous owner in August of 1989.

Then under a different owner in February 2007, the car was registered in La Canada, California, and then purchased by the seller in May of that same year.

However, the most exciting document is the Kartex sheet. The Kartex verifies that this 356 is in fact, a numbers matching example and was delivered new to Copenhagen, DK. The Kartex also shows that the car was delivered new in Light Ivory over Black Vinyl interior.

Summary

The 356 and all its iterations are fantastic automobiles. This specific 356C has great bones and it seems that all of the important parts are there. Especially because this is a numbers matching example, the work required will be well worth the cost of getting this Porsche back into proper form. This would be a rewarding and enjoyable project to resurrect one of the all-time great collector cars and, with the readily availability of spare parts and active marque specialists and owner's clubs, there’s plenty of support on hand. It’s difficult to ever pass up on a 356, but this one is not to be missed.

It should be noted that this vehicle has been on static display for a number of years and there is no history available beyond that displayed in our photography section.

We have not started or driven the car so cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

Please note that the title for this vehicle is in transit.
