“ Powered by a 2-cylinder, water-cooled engine with 12 horsepower. ”

Comes with a photocopy of a Bibb County Alabama stating the car is exempt from requiring a title.

Background

Edward M. Murphy founded the Pontiac Buggy Company at the age of twenty-eight as the horseless carriage industry was spreading throughout the city.

Within ten years his business was one of the Pontiac group’s largest employers.

In 1907 Murphy saw that the future was well and truly engine powered, and he formed the Oakland Motor Car Company, dying just two years later.

General Motors had by then established itself as a voracious holding company and had already built a collection of vehicle manufacturers such as Buick, Oldsmobile and Cadillac.

After Murphy’s unfortunate death, General Motors began to actively pursue Pontiac, acquiring the company in full in 1909.

Overview

This 1908 ‘The Pontiac’ buggy is thought to be one of just 4 examples left in existence out of a total of 40-60 examples ever built.

Water-cooled and powered by a 2 cylinder, 12 hp engine, the vehicle drives the rear wheels through chains.

It is authentic, highly original and ready to be restored.

This vehicle is currently in storage at CARS Europe BV. If you require a quote for shipping anywhere in the world, please contact them direct (details below).

The winning bidder will receive a receipt for the final hammer value, as their legal proof of purchase.

Unless otherwise stated, we have not tried to start or drive the car and cannot vouch for its mechanical viability or functionality. It will require recommissioning prior to road use and is sold ‘as seen’.

It must be collected within 7-days of the auction end. Storage charges (€70 + local VAT per car per week) will commence from the sixth day following the auction end.  These must be paid in full prior to the vehicle’s collection or onward transportation.

Collection and viewings are strictly by appointment only.

Please send an email to the storage centre to ensure vehicle(s) are ready at time of collection. Photographic ID will be required at time of collection. If a third party is collecting for you, then written authorisation is required in advance from you and photographic ID of the third party is required at the time of collection.

CARS Europe BV will contact you after the balance payment is received to confirm onward transport requirements. For enquiries about import tax and shipping contact Madam Joanna Herlihy, +31 (0) 252 682 526, +44 7483 433912, joanna@carsworldwide.com.

Exterior

The bodywork is solid, sound and remarkably well-preserved.

The red ‘artillery’ wheels look to be in good order and, as far as we can tell, the vehicle’s rudimentary fixtures and fittings are present and correct.

There is a large storage box behind the bench seat, inside which you’ll find the petrol tank.

Interior

The interior is on the outside, as you’ll have no doubt noticed.

The quilted black bench seat has various rips and tears to it, but the structure and frame seem sound and would serve as accurate templates for any refurbished or replaced upholstery.

The fat wood-rimmed steering wheel, although cracked in a couple of places, is a tactile delight.

Mechanical

Clearly, we can’t vouch for the car’s mechanicals because we haven’t started or driven it, but what we can see appears to be complete and also free of any serious corrosion.

History

In common with many of the cars from this collection, this example comes with very little paperwork or history.

It does, however, have photocopies of an Alabama registration document and some Bibb County, Alabama, paperwork stating that the car is exempt by virtue of its age from needing a registration title.

Summary

This 1908 Pontiac Buggy is as exceptionally rare as it is undoubtedly charming.

It would make a fine addition to a collection of veteran or ‘Brass Era’ cars or, post-restoration, a characterful competitor at events such as the annual London-to-Brighton run.

We’re confident to offer this fine car for auction with an estimate of €10,000 - €15,000.

The car is currently in storage, you can see a picture of the collection as it stands today at the very bottom of the photo gallery.
