Background

The original Mini needs no introduction. One of very few genuinely ground-breaking cars, the Alec Issigonis-designed Mini is rightly praised for its innovative engineering, handsome looks, surprisingly spacious interior and giant-killing handling.

It remained in continuous production for the next four decades, winning praise from all who owned or drove one. The iconic Mini provided transport for millions of families who might not otherwise have been able to afford to run a modern car. It slew all who were daft enough to compete against it in competition. It won praise from private owners, professional rally drivers, vanquished competitors, pundits and spectators, who keep it close to their hearts, even more than sixty years after it first came into being. Who would have thought in 1959, it would become one of the best-selling cars in Europe?

Overview

The vendor for this 1968 Morris Mini Mk2 is dealing with it as part of a collection from a deceased estate; therefore, some of the history is quite vague.

The Mini has had just two previous keepers, but it had been in the ownership of the estate since 1980. The Mini has covered 96,815 miles and is believed to be wearing its original coat of paint, with just a few areas being touched up over the years. The car presents really well for the age and has clearly been mainly in dry storage for most of its life.

Exterior

Finished in what is thought to be a similar colour to Old English White, the Mini, as mentioned, is believed to be in the original paint. Starting at the front of the car, the chrome work is in really good condition, with just the smallest amount of tarnishing to the bumper. Being the Mk2, the Mini had a facelift with the grille. There is some damage to the slats on the grille towards the bottom, but with that said, Mini parts are readily available from several specialists. The headlight surrounds also have a small amount of tarnishing, but the lenses are in good order, with no cracks. The bonnet looks to be in line with an equal gap down each wing rail and across the grille. Moving up to the windscreen and seal, both look in good condition.

Looking down the flanks of the Morris Mini Mk2, there is some surface corrosion around the wheel arches and also on the seam of the A panel, which has been painted over. However, the doors look to align as they should, and the sliding windows look to be in good condition with just a few age-related scratches. In addition, the opening quarter window frames look in good order and open and close as they should.

Around to the rear, and again everything looks to be in good order. The Mk2 received a larger rear window which is in good condition, and the later style light clusters, which are free from splits. The bumper has some tarnishing as does the surround for the Morris Mini MkII badge. The wheels are steel and have been painted red with chrome hubcaps fitted; these are in good condition, and the tyres also have a good amount of tread remaining.

Interior

Inside, the Mini has different colour seats than the rest of the interior, and it’s unclear whether these are the originals. They would benefit from a deep clean, especially the driver's seat or even replacing them wouldn’t be a difficult job. The rear seat has a seat cover fitted which has not been lifted up to inspect the condition of the seat.

Sitting behind the original two-spoke steering wheel, which is in good condition for the age, you will see some slight crazing to the Mini centre badge. The rest of the dashboard is in good condition, and again pretty much like the Mk1 Mini, the instruments are located in the centre, with the odometer showing a reading of 96,815 miles. However, the vendor does not confirm these to be working as the car has been unused since taking over the estate. The switch gear, although there are not a lot of switches, looks to be in good condition with minimal wear to the lettering on the choke and heater controls.

The carpets are in good order with no apparent signs of any wear to mention, and up above, the headlining is in place with no sagging, although there are a few stains. The spare wheel is in the boot, along with some floor mats.

Mechanical

Fitted with the original 998cc engine, the Mini has not been run since February 2022, when the vendor took over the handling of the estate, so we have not heard the car running. However, looking in the engine bay, the engine presents well and is finished in the original BMC green. There are some signs of a small leak around the engine, but it doesn't look to be actually dripping.

Looking at the underside, everything looks to be in order, with no obvious points of corrosion to mention. The whole underside has been coated in an underseal type covering to futureproof and hopefully stop any unwanted corrosion setting in. There are some signs of perishing to the tie rod bushes.

It is reported by the neighbour of the gentleman whose Mini it was, that the car was started and moved about regularly.

History

The V5 is present and shows just two previous keepers. There is also the original Mini Minor driver’s handbook and some photographs of the car over the years. A good selection of previous MoT certificates shows the vehicle has been in continuous use over the years.

Summary

This 1968 Morris Mini Mk2 is a time warp classic. The vehicle looks to have been regularly used and has retained its originality. To our knowledge, the car has been in storage since at least February 2022. Although it is reported to have been in use before that, we would certainly recommend a qualified mechanic carry some recommissioning work out before being used on the roads.

With many original features, this is a great base to recommission and restore one of the most recognisable British cars on the road today.

We estimate this British classic to bring in the region of £4,000 - £7,000.
