Background

The Morgan Plus Four is one of the most distinctive cars on the roads today and the Malvern factory will be happy to sell you a brand-new car, should that be your thing.

Looks have scarcely changed, though in the last few years there have been alterations under the skin to improve the driving experience and (whisper it) modernise the car.

Sacrilege.

Let’s rewind to just after World War II when Morgan reintroduced their 4/4 model. This remained in production until 1950 when the larger Plus Four burst onto the motoring scene at the Earl’s Court Motor Show.

Production continued until 1969 and then there was a lull until the model was revived once again in 1985. After yet another pause in 2000, the Plus Four was again on sale from 2005 until 2020 when the ‘all-new’, but visually very similar, Plus Four put in another appearance.

The driving experience is somewhat old-school, but there is no doubting the fun to be had behind the wheel of any Morgan Plus Four, whatever the age. They are a proper driver’s car, shorn of modern tech and the fripperies and distractions of the digital age.

Old-fashioned thrills are the order of the day in one of these cars, no matter how humdrum the journey or prosaic the destination, and we‘re inclined to think they’re all the better for it.

Overview

This Rover-engined Calypso Red Morgan Plus Four is a low-ownership example with just 49,790 miles on the clock.

It has been in the same family ownership since 2008 and, although it starts, runs, goes, stops and generally feels like a good, well-maintained, low-mileage car, it hasn’t been used for a while and could probably do with some light recommissioning as a consequence.

A Morgan ‘Chassis Record’ card tells us that the car left the factory with the following options: door handles, extra tread rubbers, stone leather piped red, walnut dash, sports seats, stone PVC weather equipment, undersealing, radio/cd player, aerial, mounting box, cigar lighter, and a map reading light.

Exterior

In common with most Morgans, this one looks like it’s mainly been used for high days, holidays and warm, dry, sunny days.

The shut-lines and panel gaps look as crisp, consistent and even as you would hope and expect to find on a car that’s been hand-built by artisans in Malvern.

The BMW Calypso Red 252 paintwork is shiny and lustrous throughout and even entirely standard light scratches, scuffs and stone chips are rather more notable for their absence than their presence.

The wire wheels appear to be unfamiliar with kerbs, potholes or other roadside hazards and the tyres would seem to have plenty of life left in them.

The car’s chrome-work is free of any foxing or tarnishing, and the lights, lenses, badging and other exterior fixtures and fittings all present as pretty much showroom-fresh and beyond criticism.

The same applies to the hood and tonneau, which fit snugly and appear to be free of any meaningful nicks, tears or holes that we can see.

Interior

The interior has held up pretty well, too.

The seats are comfortable and supportive and come with detachable headrests.

The leather upholstery is showing some signs of wear on the shoulders of the driver’s seat backrest and the outer bolsters of the same seat.

The passenger seat has just a few creases to show for its years of service.

There’s also some wear to the leather roll atop the doors, which in this car are designed to be used as armrests.

The door cards are decent, save for a few scuffs and marks. Ditto with the trim behind the seats and around the wheel-arches.

The metal speaker grilles have a little surface rust in evidence.

The dark red carpets and mats look good to us, as do the walnut dashboard, the Moto-Lita steering wheel, the gear lever and the handbrake.

Mechanical

This car probably wouldn’t recognise rain, sleet or snow if you showed it photographs.

Its pampered existence and low mileage are reflected in undersides that look solid, sound and possessed of plenty of structural integrity.

The engine bay is clean and dry, and everything seems to be in its right and proper place.

History

The car comes with various bills, receipts and invoices covering routine servicing and maintenance carried out.

It also has a photographic record of its build at the Morgan factory in Malvern.

It comes with a recent, clear HPI report and an MoT certificate that’s valid until 26.7.25.

Summary

A Morgan Plus Four has the power to transport its owner and passenger back to a bygone age of cream teas, buck-toothed vicars, maiden aunts and country lanes lined with billowing cow parsley.

Despite its charmingly pre-war looks it features modern mechanicals and electrics, and offers spirited wind-in-the-hair performance.

This example ticks all the right boxes for us and we’re confident that, after a quick mechanical freshen-up, it will offer its next owner many happy years of simple, uncomplicated, analogue pleasure.

We’re confident to offer this fine car for auction with an estimate of £18,000 - £22,000.
