Background

The Morgan Plus 4 is one of the most distinctive cars on the roads today and the Malvern factory will be happy to sell you a brand-new car, should that be your thing. Looks have scarcely changed, though in the last couple of years there have been alterations under the skin to improve the driving experience and dare we say it, modernise the car. Sacrilege to some.

Let’s rewind to just after World War II when Morgan reintroduced their 4/4 model. This remained in production until 1950 when the larger Plus 4 burst onto the motoring scene at the Earl’s Court Motor Show.

Production continued until 1969 and then there was a lull until the model was revived once again in 1985. After yet another pause in 2000, the Plus 4 was again on sale from 2005 until 2020 when the ‘all-new’, but still looks the same, Plus 4 finally put in an appearance.

The driving experience is somewhat old-school, but there is no doubting the fun to be had behind the wheel of any Morgan Plus 4, whatever the age. They are a proper driver’s car, shorn of modern tech. Old school thrills are the order of the day, no matter how humdrum the journey.

Overview

We are delighted to be offering for sale a 1967 Plus 4 which was imported from the USA earlier this year. It comes complete with the all-important NOVA document.

The seller advises that it is a matching numbers car and one which has spent most of its life in the dry climate of Arizona. A little over 58,000 miles is showing on the odometer which the seller believes may well be genuine.

From Morgan’s records, we can see that the car was originally dispatched to Germany.

Presented in the right colour combination for any Morgan, this is a head-turning car without a doubt.

Before we get too carried away, we should mention that the Plus 4 has been laid up for over two years and will require some recommissioning. We have been told brake and clutch work will be required and the electrics fully checking. Old school engineering means that most work is well within the capabilities of the skilled home mechanic.

We have also fitted a new battery and though the engine turns over, it will not start. Some more tinkering will be required.

Exterior

The build sheet tells us that the Plus 4 was originally painted a non-standard pale blue grey in colour. It will have been the first owner’s heart’s desire no doubt.

Some sensible soul saw fit to repaint it in a far more traditional green hue, though we have no idea when this was done. What we can tell you is that it polishes up quite nicely.

Essential for our changeable UK climate is the soft-top, but this is rather old, and we suspect the new owner will want to replace it in due course. The frame has some surface rust on it and could do with some attention.

The side screens are present and correct, though we note the plastic windows are somewhat scratched through use. They can be easily removed and stored behind the front seats for that real wind in the hair, and elsewhere, feeling.

Disc wheels are fitted and these are in reasonable condition. We would be inclined to budget for a new set of tyres, not a great expense.

As with most cars of this period, there is plenty of shiny chrome, so best stock up on a proprietary cleaner to keep it all shipshape. We do note that the front bumper is crooked, being higher on the nearside.

Interior

The seats have been rebuilt and retrimmed in black leather and look oh so smart. You sit low in a Morgan, with your legs stretched out, the view down that long bonnet a joy.

Once ensconced behind the wheel, everything falls easily to hand and once you get into the Morgan groove, you cannot help but have a huge grin on your face as you blast down the road, wind in your hair. There’s always a feeling you are travelling faster than you actually are.

A wooden dash with basic instrumentation in the middle keeps things simple and within easy reach of the steering wheel is the stubby gear lever, perfectly placed for the snappy changes needed to keep the engine in its sweet spot.

The wood could do with a quick revarnish to restore its look, the warm American sun having had an effect we believe.

Some of the interior trim looks a little jaded, so we would be inclined to seek out a good trimmer to look at the carpeting etc.

Mechanical

We always include plenty of photographs of a car’s underside in our listings and that is the case here. We would spend some time taking it all in. There are some signs of surface corrosion in places, and we would be inclined to get the car up on some ramps and get cleaning before coating all the metal with a good quality underseal, especially if the car is to be enjoyed all the year round.

Pictures of the engine compartment are also available for your delectation and though we cannot start the car at present, we are told it was running when it first returned to UK shores.

As mentioned, we do know that some attention to the brakes and clutch will be required after the car’s two plus years lay-up.

History

We would like to be able to show a raft of invoices and assorted paperwork for this mighty Morgan, but sadly we have very little to go on.

The all-important NOVA document accompanies the car, confirming that all VAT and duty has been correctly accounted for.

A UK registration document will need to be applied for and the Chassis Record from Morgan will clearly help with this. Furthermore, they are friendly folk down at the Malvern factory and will offer help and support if required.

Summary

This lovely Morgan will doubtless make an excellent winter project as we know a certain amount of recommissioning will be required. Then come spring, we can imagine the new owner enjoying carefree days, pottering through the English countryside, perhaps with a wicker picnic hamper attached to a luggage rack.

A new Morgan, fresh from the factory can be yours but at a price. £60,000 + for a new Plus 4 last time we looked.

We therefore think that the expected £20,000 to £25,000 sale price is a bit of a bargain. And if you think so too, get bidding right away and snap up this Morgan.
