Background
The 1998 Mitsubishi 3000GT or as is also commonly know in some markets as the GTO was a sports car produced from 1990-2001 and it was part of the companies long standing GTO/3000 GT sports car line up.
The 1998 3000GT was offered with two different engine options, the base model used a naturally aspirated 3.0 V6 and was capable of producing 161 horsepower and 185lb-ft of torque.
The second engine option, featured a high performance 6G72 engine that was much more powerful and whilst still used a 3.0 V6 also featured twin turbochargers, double over head cams (DOHC), 24 valves and produced double the horsepower of the standard engine. This engine was usually found in the much rarer and more sought after VR-4 model. The VR-4 came as standard with a 6-speed manual, which is said to of provided precise and sporty gear changes thanks to its short throws and solid feel, which ultimately enhanced the cars sporty driving experience. This power allowed the 3000GT to reach 0-62 in around 5 seconds, which for a sports car the 90’s is incredible and not far of that of the original Lamborghini Countach.
As well as 320 horsepower, a six-speed manual, the 3000GT featured an advanced all wheel drive system, known as Super-Select AWD. The ultra-high tech AWD system allowed for the driver to select different driving models, including front wheel drive, automatic AWD and a full-time AWD mode for enhanced traction and stability.
There is an abundance of technology and features that makes the VR-4 ultimately one of the best sports cars of the 90’s and because of this the VR-4 is considered to be one of the rarer and more collectible cars of the 90’s and is often compared to other Japanese sports cars of that era such as the Nissan 300ZX and the Toyota Supra.
