Background

The Mini needs no introduction. One of very few genuinely ground-breaking cars, the Alec Issigonis-designed Mini is rightly praised for its innovative engineering, handsome looks, surprisingly spacious interior, and phenomenal handling.

It provided transport for millions who might not otherwise have been able to afford to run a modern car and, in competition, it was routinely victorious. It won praise from private owners, professional rally drivers, competitors, pundits and spectators, all of whom keep it close to their hearts, even now - more than sixty years after its introduction.

Introduced in 1959 as cheap, basic family transport, it started life with an 850cc engine, which was fitted transversely and above the gearbox. Originally marketed as the Austin Seven and Morris Mini Minor, it was given the Mini name in 1969. It evolved over the years mechanically too, gaining engine capacity and performance along the way.

No matter what engine was fitted, whether the original 850cc unit or the later 1275cc, the power and torque outputs were always relatively – and deliberately – modest. But then the engine only had only to haul 686kgs, which means that the Mini is surprisingly quick, both in acceleration and braking. Cheap to run too, whether in fuel, insurance, or maintenance and repair.

Still much sought after, a whole new generation of collectors and enthusiasts is flocking to the mighty Mini, especially the Cooper and Cooper S models, classics that will always draw an appreciative crowd.

And while some prefer the early, simple cars, many are starting to appreciate the reliability and improved safety of the last-of-the-line cars.

Overview

This 1995 LHD manual Mini Cooper seems to us to be in very fine overall condition and presents extremely well from every angle.

The VIN is SAXXNNAZRWD149689/55.

The odometer reads 97,828 kms.

It has been used very little in recent years, as a 2014 odometer reading of 97,506 kms testifies.

The car comes with no history or service records beyond whatever documentation is shown in the gallery.

Exterior

The car is black with a white roof and white bonnet stripes.

The paintwork appears to be in very decent condition overall and, aside from the expected stone chips in the usual places - front valance, wheel arches, sills and leading edges of bonnet and doors - looks every bit as fresh and shiny as you’d want it to be.

The bodywork is free of any dinks, dents or creases of any significance that we can see and the panel gaps and shut lines are consistent and even.

The chrome work is very good, although there is a little rust dust in evidence on the chrome surround to the passenger-side headlamp.

The Union flag decal on the passenger side is starting to lift up.

The lights, lenses and badging all seem to be fine, as does the majority of the exterior trim.

The wheels, although broadly good, do have some scuffing and kerbing in places.

Interior

The interior of the car is in good condition too, and although it has a light patina that’s consistent with its age and kilometres, nothing is overly damaged, worn or broken that we can see.

The leather upholstery is lightly creased but otherwise decent, front and back.

The door cards are in very good order, too, as are the carpets and mats.

The steering wheel, gear lever, dashboard and other interior fixtures and fittings all seem fine.

The rear storage pods are scuffed and scratched, presumably by the ingress and egress of rear passengers coming and going.

Some of the wood veneers on the dashboard and glove compartment are faded in places and the lacquer is cracked and lifting here and there.

As far as we’re aware, all dials, switches, knobs, levers and instruments do what they’re supposed to do.

The boot is in decent condition, if a little dusty, and contains a spare wheel and tools.

Mechanical

The engine and engine bay are clean, dry and very fresh-looking.

So too are the car’s undersides, which appear to have a decent amount of structural integrity.

History

The car doesn’t come with any service records, history or documentation beyond what is shown in the gallery section.

Summary

This 1995 Mini seems to us to be a good example of a late model Cooper.

Its only flaws are minor and, we think, cosmetic. This iconic British car should reward its next owner with the joys of balanced handling, lively performance and a great deal of pedigree, classic motoring pleasure.

We confidently offer this splendid car for auction with an estimate of between €10,000 - €15,000.
