Background

Even back in the 1980s, Austin-Rover's Metro must have seemed an unlikely candidate for World Rally Championship honours.

But although the MG-badged Metro 6R4 - like its Group B rivals from Lancia and Peugeot - bore a passing resemblance to the road car whose name it bore, beneath the skin it was an entirely different animal.

Gone was the puny A-Series engine/front-wheel-drive package, replaced by a 3.0-litre, 90-degree V6 sited behind the front seats and driving all four wheels. Twin-cam cylinder heads, modelled on those of Cosworth's Formula 1 DFV V8 engine, enabled the V64V unit to develop 250bhp in 'Clubman' trim, with up to 410bhp being available in full works tune.

Designed by Patrick Head of Williams Grand Prix Engineering, the mid-engined chassis, needless to say, owed almost nothing to that of the standard Metro. In the course of its development a host of aerodynamic and other appendages were grafted on to the basic Metro bodyshell, resulting in an end product that looked... well, 'purposeful' was about the kindest description.

Group B regulations required a minimum build of 200 cars, the first of which was completed in mid-1985 and the last in November of that year. When Group B was axed by the FIA, Austin-Rover disposed of the reputedly 120-or-so cars left unsold, warning purchasers that the Metro 6R4 was 'not intended for domestic, casual, business or other motoring on the pubic highway...'

Sadly, the works Computervision-sponsored 6R4's debut performance, when Tony Pond drove one to 3rd place in the '85 RAC Rally behind a brace of Lancia Delta S4s, would prove to be its most successful.

However, after the works team's withdrawal from World Championship rallying, the 6R4 found its true métier - Rallycross - a sport it would continue to excel at well into the 1990s.

Overview

This 1989 MG Metro 6R4 is a unique amalgamation and blend of 1980s Group B, F1, F2 and Le Mans 24hr racing, and was bought as a Clubman Shell from the Group B stock following the Group B ban.

It is 2WD and features a 2500cc Hart 420R engine mated to an uprated Hewland FGC gearbox.

According to EWRC records, Q777 RDS (the car was registered on a ‘Q’ plate from the outset) was campaigned by Murray Grierson from 1989 to 1992, with notable results including 5 wins.  EWRC records also list three other owners of the car.

In September 2023 this extraordinary machine completed a thoroughly expert, totally comprehensive and utterly painstaking 9-month restoration project, with significant contributions from friends and family, Ronaldson Mechanical Services, Highland Speed Shop, Hewland Classic/PDS Racing, Mardis Gras Motorsport, Panel Craft, Hestan Composites, and Foss Fabrications – to name but a few.

The vendor, a successful businessman whose abiding passion is motorsports and, in particular, rallying, has had a successful motorsports team for many years and has owned and campaigned Q777 for over a decade.

The car has new sills, a proper tank floor by Panel Craft, and has been epoxy primed and given several layers of 2K paint.

The following is a list of highlights from the recent work, indicating - where relevant - the number of miles covered since the work was carried out.

Engine: re-built by Jim Oddy - 300 miles.

Engine Servicing: crank shaft oil seal, belts, oil and filters.

Engine Management: Omex 600 ECU, wiring loom, 55mm Jenvey throttle bodies  - 100 miles.

Gearbox: fully rebuilt by PDS Racing/Hewland Classic - 5 miles.

Gear Selection: Linear bearings - 5 miles.

Clutch: AP racing twin plate – 25 miles.

Suspension: Proflex 2 or 3 way - 300 miles.

Wheel bearings: new - 5 miles.

Wheels: 15” gravel and 16” tarmac.

Brakes: new seals and link pipes where required plus additional spares supplied in spares package.

Intercom: Stillo WRC+.

Spares: original Bilstein shocks, drive shafts, Hart 420R cylinder head, pistons, rings, coil pack, HT leads and more.

Seats: new seats Feb 24.

MoT: valid until 14.3.25.

Harnesses and fire extinguishers: new Feb 24.

Exterior

The bodywork is really very straight and in excellent condition, being free from any dinks, dents, bangs, crumples, creases, ripples or folds of note.

The whole vehicle feels sound, solid and very well screwed together.

It has clearly been restored to the highest possible standards and is, as our American cousins would say, ‘built to the hilt’.

Interior

Don’t go looking for cup holders, lambs-wool over-rugs or burr walnut veneers in here.

This is a serious, ready-to-race, no-compromise rally car.

The seats and harnesses, like much else in the interior, are brand new and in immaculate condition.

Everything else is either new, refurbished, restored or overhauled.

As far as we’re aware, everything works as it should.

To all intents and purposes, it’s as good as new.

Mechanical

The engine and engine bay look clean, shiny and dry.

The undersides appear to be possessed of plenty of structural integrity and nothing we’ve seen has prompted us to tut or raise an eyebrow.

Obviously, you’ll want to see for yourself and reach you own conclusion.

History

This car comes with a Motorsport UK Vehicle Passport and is eligible for Stage Rally - Category 1 events until November 2033.

It also comes with a recent, clear HPI report, a V5, and an MoT certificate that’s valid until 14.3.25.

The vendor will provide the successful bidder with all manner of photographic evidence of the car’s rebuild and other documentation once the car is sold.

Summary

With the Hart engine placed in the middle and coupled to a Hewland FGC 5-speed dog box, this proven rally car is perfectly balanced, has the bulk of its weight over the driving wheels, and is possessed of a great deal of usable, tractable power.

As the vendor says, “Put simply, this thing is awesome”.
