Background

Location: Abingdon, Year: 1958, Codename: MG EX205 - this was when the development of the MGB Roadster started. It has a unitary structure as opposed to the traditional body-on-frame construction used on the MGA and the MG T-type. However, it wasn't until four years later, in 1962, that the British Motor Corporation BMC started to market the MGB and finally offered it to purchase in 1963.

The Engine used in the MGB was the BMC B-series engine, the previous MGA’s 1600cc engine that had been taken out to 1800cc. Initially, the early cars had a three-main bearing crankshaft which was changed to five bearing in 1974. Fueled by twin SU carburettors, the power output of both the three and five bearing engines was 95bhp at 5,400 rpm, with the torque at 110 ft-lb torque. This gave the MGB a 0-60 mph of just over 11 seconds.

Early cars up until 1968 used a four-speed manual gearbox with a straight-cut first gear, no synchromesh and optional overdrive. From 1968 onwards, the gearbox used was that of the unit designed to handle the three-litre power from the MGC and therefore was over-engineered when coupled to the MGB B-series engine.

Production for the Roadster continued up until 1980, with the main change in the latter part of 1974 when the introduction of rubber bumpers came into force to meet impact regulations. The more desirable model is the chrome bumper model, which this particular model is, making it an excellent choice for anyone looking to own a classic British two-seater.

Overview

The MGB Roadster is undoubtedly a British icon throughout the world of classic cars, and this one certainly doesn't disappoint!

This beautiful 1973 Flame Red MG B Roadster has been with the vendor for approximately five years. The car was given a freshen-up some 20-plus years ago, and around ten years ago, the engine was reconditioned. Since then, the vehicle has had very little use, as we can see from the MoT history. So little in fact, it has covered just under 1,000 miles in the past seven years, which is the main reason the vendor is parting with it.

The vendor does have a new Mohair roof and tonneau cover, which are available for separate negotiation; these are said to be valued at approximately £900.

Exterior

Finished in the lovely Flame Red, the MG B Roadster presents very well. Some small blisters around the MG are in keeping with a vehicle of this age. Starting at the front of the MG, the chrome work is in superb condition, apart from a small ding in the grille. The headlights are excellent, with no cracks in the lenses and the reflectors behind look in good order. Lower down, the side lights and indicator lenses are also free from any damage. The bonnet aligns well with an equal gap along each wing rail. Further up, the windscreen frame looks in good condition, and there don’t appear to be any noticeable scratches in the windscreen.

Around to the sides of the car, the doors align well with a matching panel gap, and the swage trim aligns all the way along. There is some blistering on the front wing along the swage line. The door handles are in excellent condition with no tarnishing to the chrome. The vinyl roof sits nice and tight, and there is no damage to be seen. The plastic rear window is also excellent and is free from any discolouration.

At the rear, just like the front, the chrome bumper is in excellent condition, and the light lenses have no splits or cracks. The boot lid does sit a little high on the nearside, and this may be able to be adjusted. At some point, the wheels were replaced with Minilite style wheels. These are in good condition with no apparent signs of any damage or corrosion other than a few minor age-related marks, and the tyres are in good order with a good amount of tread remaining.

Interior

Inside the Roadster, the seats are said to be the originals and are in excellent condition with no real wear to be seen. The door cards and carpets are also in good order and would be in keeping with the low mileage MG B.

The dashboard fascia has a couple of small chips, but nothing that couldn’t be touched up. The steering wheel has been replaced with a leather-trimmed item offering a little more comfort than the original. The instruments have chrome bezels in nice condition.

The gauges are said to all be working correctly, with the odometer showing 24,404, which the vendor reports as the original mileage. The switchgear looks in good order, with no real wear to the lettering. Towards the centre and for a modern touch, there has been a JVC CD head-unit fitted.

Mechanical

The engine bay of the MG presents well. Looking around, there are no signs of any leaks, and everything appears to be in good order. With a little choke, the car starts up as it should and runs as you would expect. There has been some reconditioning work carried out to the engine approximately ten years ago, along with some rewiring to the loom.

A recent check over has seen a new fuel pipe fitted along with a battery. An isolator has also been fitted to the battery to prevent any drain when the car is being stored.

The MG B is reported to drive as it should, with no knocks or bangs coming from the suspension. Changing gear is a smooth operation, and the car pulls well through the four-speed gearbox with overdrive operated via the dash-mounted toggle switch.

History

This is a lovely MG B Roadster which is said to have covered just 24,404 miles. Although there has been some bodywork around 20 years ago, the interior is in original condition with the addition of a JVC CD head-unit.

The vendor has owned the car for approximately five years, and in that time, it’s safe to say it’s spent more time parked than being driven due to busy work and family life.

There is some paperwork with the car which dates back several years showing various jobs which have been carried out. There is also an MGB handbook present and some previous MoT certificates.

Summary

The MGB was a hugely popular car when it was made and is now still as popular in the classic car market.

Being easy to work on and having readily available spares, they are an excellent choice for anyone wanting to step into British classic car ownership.

It could be a weekend toy to scoot around the countryside or take to the show field at a classic car rally. It is quite simply ready to drive and enjoy!

We estimate this stunning British classic to reach between £10,000 - £15,000.
