Background

The MGB must be one of the best known British sports cars ever produced. Development began as early as 1958, but it wasn’t until 1962 that the first cars rolled off the production line at the Abingdon factory.

With a tear in our eye, we also note that the B would also be the last car the factory produced, closing as it did in 1980.

Throughout its 18-year life, the basic body shape remained unaltered, apart from post 1975 cars which sported impact resistant black bumpers front and rear. The ride height was also raised by an inch. We can blame the Americans, as this modification was designed primarily to meet their increasingly tough safety legislation.

The original concept of the open two-seater sports car was considered ahead of its time and despite the latter day ‘improvements’, the car somehow never dated.

Over half a million cars were produced in both convertible and coupe guises, making the ‘B’ the best-selling MG of all time. Most were fitted with an 1,800cc engine in various states of tune, but a six cylinder MGC and MGB GT V8 were both on sale for a limited time.

Overview

Turn the clock way back to 1966, and a very lucky individual took delivery of our red MGB Roadster. What a dash he or she must have cut, burbling through the English countryside, roof folded away on those sunny days.

Fast forward 41 years and our seller purchased what was to become his cherished B from renowned MG specialists Former Glory when they were in Perivale, London (now they're in Thame, Oxfordshire). In fact, they have a dedicated MG showroom, often housing up to 40 cars at any one time.

Our seller had decided he wanted a car that had been rebuilt with a new Heritage shell, as he felt this would be the best way to ensure many years of trouble free motoring ahead.

Former Glory had fully restored the car, using a new shell and either reconditioned or brand new parts. It would be fair to say our seller had bought what was effectively a showroom fresh car.

Being a handy type, he has carried out most of the routine maintenance himself, though entrusting the very tricky jobs to a local garage.

He reports that the car drives exceptionally well and has been a paragon of reliability, the only glitches being due to user error, such as leaving the sidelights on…

The car has only been used on dry days and this shows in the car’s still excellent condition, fourteen years after its restoration.

Our seller now finds working on the MGB a bit of a challenge, advancing years taking its toll on him, not the car! He has therefore charged us with finding a new owner for his lovely car.

Exterior

If you are going to have a traditional British sportscar, then you can’t beat red. The paintwork is quite stunning, and the seller has done his best to keep it in top order. Always dry stored when not in use, this has clearly paid dividends.

With the car being reshelled, the shut lines and panel gaps are excellent. The paint has an excellent deep lustre to it, the paint sprayer clearly being a master at his craft.

Shiny chrome completes the look, and this is all in excellent condition.

Wire wheels all round are shod with Singer tyres with plenty of tread. As we always like to point out, good tyres are usually a clear indication of careful and considered classic car ownership.

Our seller replaced the hood in 2013 with a quality mohair item and this presents well, other than some creasing on the plastic windows. There is a tonneau cover with the car too, which neatens things up when the top is down.

Interior

Those who know their MGBs will notice the improved seats with headrests. Comfort and extra safety, so we cannot argue with this upgrade.

The leather is a little marked in places and we would be inclined to buy some coloured dye and leather cleaner. A pleasant Sunday afternoon task.

The wood dash and door cappings help give the interior that authentic period feel and we do like the wooden Moto-Lita steering wheel and gear knob too.

The car is protected by a fully functional Moss alarm.

There is no radio fitted, but with the sound of that lively 1800cc engine for company, we doubt it will be missed.

Carpets are fine and are protected by MG monogrammed rubber mats.

The MGB has a decent sized boot and our car’s luggage compartment is nicely trimmed and houses a full-size wire wheel spare.

Mechanical

We always go to the trouble of making our photographer scrabble under our cars to take plenty of photographs. You can see them in our accompanying gallery, and we are sure you will be impressed.

Not using the car in the rain and garaging the car properly when not in use has clearly paid dividends. We can see nothing that would cause us the slightest concern.

The engine compartment is also very well presented. No signs of corrosion and lots of shiny red paint. There is loads of room, making this an ideal car for home maintenance, which is exactly what our seller did.

The car starts easily, helped in part by the electronic ignition now fitted.

History

As we have already mentioned, the car was fully rebuilt in 2007 using a new Heritage shell and either brand new or reconditioned parts. Careful ownership since then, has ensured that the car not only still looks good, but drives really well. The previous owner put about 7000 miles on the clock.

Home servicing was regularly carried out we are told, and a few jobs were entrusted to a local garage. These included the fitment of a new alternator and water pump.

In addition, a new premium Yuasa battery was fitted earlier this year.

Our seller has travelled around 20,000 miles in the 14 years he's owned the car, which is backed up by the MoT history. The last test was carried out in 2018 and of course the car is now registered as a historic vehicle.

Summary

This classic British sports car is presented in great condition and is ready for autumnal adventures. It has been cherished during our long-term owner’s hands and we feel sure that the new owner will want to carry on the good work.

We know the car will undoubtedly attract a lot of interest as good MGBs always easily find new homes, especially early cars. We estimate that the car will sell for between £9,000 and £15,000.

Viewing is always encouraged, within government guidelines of course.
