THIS LOT WILL BE SOLD WITH VAT ON TOP OF THE HAMMER PRICE.

In times of rising energy costs and increasing environmental awareness, Mercedes-Benz could be considered a bit of an outlier when they launched their G-Class 6x6 in 2013. The vehicle, albeit being a success and selling out fast, was only meant to be produced in very limited numbers and its production ended after only two years in 2015. These cars have since become very sought after and can fetch seven-digit numbers when they are up for sale.

In 2018, Classic Youngtimers Consultancy in collaboration with Polish tuner Carlex Design announced the Mercedes-Benz X-Class 6-wheeler. The rendering got a lot of attention and by 2020, production was underway. The car is based on a standard X-class, the offroader launched in 2017. You would be forgiven for not knowing about the model; it was released only in Australia, New Zealand, parts of Europe, Africa and Latin America and never really managed to catch on. The model was discontinued in 2020. Nevertheless, the Dutch tuning garage mentioned above saw in the X-class a vehicle they could turn into something quite special and have some fun with, and we think their intuition was spot-on. The X-class 6-wheeler is a gloriously silly thing that you did not know you needed before seeing it here.

Overview

The X-class 6-wheeler on offer is the result of a collaboration between the Dutch of Classic Youngtimers Consultancy and the input from Polish tuner Carlex design. The vehicle was built using a normal 2020 X-class and has done 29.000kms since new. The car is located in the Netherlands, is road legal and one of a total of three examples produced.

Exterior

The X-class is presented in black paint and has had some major modifications done to its bodywork. To begin, massive, almost cartoonish fender flares were added to house the larger wheels. On all doors, protection plates have also been added. The front grille, rather standard on the original X-class, has been replaced with an AMG GTR version to give an even more aggressive stance at the front. Most intriguing though is the addition of an enormous roll-bar on the pick-up surface, which has been covered in removable riffled steel plates. Removing the detachable roll-bar could in theory even turn the X-class into a camper – we can imagine a variety of different uses for the vehicle, and that is what it was built for. The exterior is in overall good condition and only a few minor scratches are visible in the pictures; we hope those will not be the last, because if you use this car as intended, they will not be. Being a relatively new car, the wheels and tires are in excellent condition. The same can be said about the chrome bits and front and rear lights.

Interior

The inside of the cabin, which can comfortably fit five passengers, has been left untouched by the tuning company. The interior is a mix of black leather and plastic and, albeit being simple, has everything you need to be comfortable. Being a utility vehicle originally, the X-class does not have the luxurious trims you would expect in a G-class for example, but the finish is still clearly to Mercedes-Benz quality standards. The seats, in very good condition given the modest mileage of the vehicle, are made of black leather. The X-class is equipped with an automatic 7-speed gearbox, electric heated seats at the front, air conditioning and GPS.

Mechanical

Underneath the bonnet sits a V6 turbo diesel with 3 litres of displacement and a power output of 255hp. This does not make the X-class a particularly fast or powerful car, but that was never the designer’s intention. They willingly left the engine untouched, as it provides for 406ft of torque and is rather usable in its standard configuration. This is a utility vehicle, and the designers want that it gets used as such, unlike the G-class 6x6, of which most have probably never seen any mud, if they get driven off the road to begin with!

The chassis has been modified at the rear with the addition of a custom-made subframe onto which the third axle has been fitted. Please note that the third axle is not driven; the differential is not connected to the driveshaft.

The suspension has been updated to give more ground clearance; a total of 10cm were added.

The underneath of the car is in as-new condition. As outlined above, the X-class has done less than 30.000kms, so rust or leaks of any kind are a non-issue on this example.

History

The six-wheeled X-class on offer was built as part of a limited series using a standard X-class model from 2020. A total of only three example were produced by Classic Youngtimers Consultancy in collaboration with Polish tuner Carlex Design and our car has done only 29.000kms at time of cataloguing and is in excellent condition. The car is exceptional in every aspect and the level of detail that went into building the car is truly remarkable.

Summary

While the G-class 6x6 was snapped up quickly by middle eastern buyers and changes hands for seven-figure amounts, the X-class 6-wheeler offered here is a much rarer vehicle but can be bought for a fraction of that price. The car still offers serious off-roading capabilities and ample room for camping equipment, use as a hunting vehicle or utility vehicle for commercial activities. Only three of these cars were ever produced, and if you are tempted now, we would advise you to not wait for too long to submit a bid because you might not get another chance to buy one of these impressive automobiles.
