Background

THIS CAR IS BEING RE-AUCTIONED FOLLOWING POST-SALE ISSUES REGARDING PAYMENT.

PLEASE NOTE THAT AN AUCTION PREMIUM WILL BE CHARGED, ON TOP OF THE HAMMER PRICE, OF 5% (+VAT IN THE UK AND EUROPE). FROM 16TH JAN'23 THIS APPLIES TO ALL AUCTIONS ON THE MARKET, AND FEES ARE CAPPED AT £5,000 (+VAT)

Representing the pinnacle of sports car technology and design for Mercedes-Benz in the 1990s, the Sacco-penned R129 series of Roadsters was unveiled as the successor to the venerable R107 in 1989, offered only as a two-door roadster, with an automatic soft-top and matching manual hard-top.

Initially offered In 300, 300-24 and 500 form (with two inline-six engines and a V8 respectively) the R129 family was later joined by a SL600 in 1992, which featured the monstrous 6.0-litre, 48-valve V12, and the SL 60 AMG in 1993, produced following acquisition by Mercedes-Benz of legendary tuning house AMG.

It is the SL60 that is the subject of this auction. A fantastically rare variant of the venerable R129, only 49 examples were produced in right-hand-drive format as seen here. Powered by a fettled 6.0-litre V8 engine (notably, it was the same block that later powered the SLS) the SL60 boasted a 405bhp output, and - unofficially - AMG quoted a 5.0-second 0-60 time, and a top speed of 187mph.

Overview

First registered in September 1995, this rare right-hand-drive SL60 AMG has enjoyed the company of just six owners in its lifetime - meaning six ‘honeymoon’ periods for a car such as this - and has evidently been used sparingly, pampered and preened throughout its history, with just shy of 63,000 miles on the odometer - an average of just under 2,250 miles per year.

Purchased by the current owner around three years ago from ourselves here at The Market, the car has covered around 4,000 miles in their ownership, and has continued to be cosseted, kept dry-stored and covered when not in use, and remaining in wonderfully original condition - just as it was when we last laid eyes on this masterpiece of Mercedes-AMG engineering.

Exterior

Resplendent in red - contrasting nicely against its black leather interior - this R129 remains in excellent condition overall, with typically Mercedes inch-perfect body lines, no dents or damage that we can see, and generally fantastic paintwork across the board.

Looking closely, there are some minor paint finish imperfections on the offside rear wing which are hardly noticeable (image 142/143 and shown in the video) and some light imperfections in paint on the nearside C-pillar of the hard top, along with typical age-related marks such as minor stone chips, light blemishes and other usage patina making itself known when looking over the car up-close-and-personal.

All four of the AMG five-spoke wheels remain in excellent condition, wrapped in matching Continental rubber, which - if you browse our lots regularly - you’ll know we often use as an indicator of fastidious and detail-oriented ownership.

Interior

Moving inside the comfortable, typically over-engineered cabin (and shutting a wonderfully weighted door behind us in the process) the cockpit of this SL60 is in just as excellent condition as the bodywork, having enjoyed careful use over the years which has preserved its appearance with apparent ease.

All four seats (yes, we’re including the token rear items as actual seats in this instance, though you’d struggle to fit anything other than a very small child or some luggage in them) are exemplary in their appearance, with only the lightest patina on the front outer bolsters and bases to attest to the fact they’ve ever been used.

Looking around the cabin, the high-traffic areas such as the inner door sill covers, door cards, switchgear and centre console are in equally excellent condition, though if we’re being really picky, there is some wear visible on the rear of the steering wheel at the 9-and-3 position, but this is largely hidden in use and this level of wear is still far below what would be considered commensurate for a vehicle of this age and mileage.

As far as we could tell, all systems, displays, gauges and switches worked as Mercedes intended and the vendor is not aware of any other issues or foibles.

Mechanical

The good news continued unabated under the bonnet, with the 6.0-litre AMG-tuned V8 presenting fantastically, filling the ‘bay and looking suitably purposeful.

Starting with ease whether hot or cold, the V8 engine is silky-smooth throughout the rev range, whilst the automatic gearbox shifts seamlessly and devoid of the usual ‘clunk’ that can affect SLs when shifting from P/N into D/R.

Out on the road, this SL60 AMG is nicely refined, quiet and smooth when cruising around, but put your foot down and the way that it launches forward is quite spectacular, but - in typical SL style - the car and engine seem incredibly laid-back even when pressing on with haste.

Underneath, the chassis and underside look to be in good condition overall, but - as always - we’ve included plenty of under-body photographs at the end of the gallery below.

The latest service took place at 62,430 miles and was carried out by marque specialist Calcot Cars of Reading in July 2022. The current MoT certificate is dated until 18 July 2023, showing only a minor advisory for slight play in the steering rack.

History

Included with this R129 ‘unicorn’ is an incredible, methodical and meticulous history folder, fortifying the notion that this SL has been pampered and fastidiously maintained throughout its lifetime.

The service record alone is simply astounding, whilst the original spec list (showing almost every option specified when the car was new) is also included, along with numerous MoT certificates, invoices and other paperwork, showing almost exclusively Mercedes-Benz main dealer history for the majority of the car’s life.

As ever, we’ve carried out a HPi check - the certificate for which can be found in the gallery below - there are two sets of keys/immobilser fobs, and the V5 registered keepers document is present-and-correct, showing five former keepers.

Summary

A well-kept R129 of any model is a wonderful thing, designed during Mercedes-Benz’ golden years of over-engineering and built like a tank. This, however, is one step up on even the best ‘normal’ SL, being a one-of-49, right-hand-drive SL 60 AMG; a true collectors item.

Offered for sale in outstanding overall condition, we estimate this rare, desirable and collectible example of the venerable R129 SL to fetch in the region of £42,000 - £52,000 when the hammer falls.
