Background
In the mid-nineties, a new format of media called DVD (Digital Video Disc) was introduced to the market. It reached the UK (and Europe) by 1998, and soon became the medium of choice after VHS and VCDs. Like most things in tech, it was soon termed obsolete and thus rendered useless. During the same time, as the DVD was picking up pace, a rather unique car was on its way out. It was the Mercedes-Benz SL60 AMG.
The difference between the high-density disc and what was easily an over-engineered, highly polished motor car is that, now, more than two decades later, only one is an object of desire. At nearly £100,000, when new, it sat close to the top of the Mercedes-Benz SL (R129) model range and offered almost everything a flagship GT would. Yet it was different from Mercedes-Benz’s very own SL600, and with just 49 units made for the right-hand-drive markets like the UK, it’s hardly common. Unperturbed by advancements made in its field, and most definitely, as charming as ever, the SL60 is a proper collector’s item now.
