Background

Placed at the top of Mercedes-Benz model range, the W140 S-class sedan and C140 coupé (the latter of which later became the CL-Class from 1996) was introduced in 1991. It was penned by Oliver Boulay, and Bruno Sacco oversaw the project.

Built during what many enthusiasts regard to be Mercedes’ ‘golden era’ of over-engineered vehicles, the W140 has rightly earned itself a reputation for longevity, reliability and ruggedness, with many enthusiasts also regarding the M119 5.0-litre V8 as being one of Mercedes’ finest ever engines and formed the basis of Peter Sauber’s C9 Le Mans winner..

Available in both S500 (V8) and S600 (V12) format, the C140 remained in production until 1999 in Europe and 2000 in the US, being succeeded by the C220 which, although represented a technological improvement, was widely reported by journalists and enthusiasts to be a ‘step backwards’ in terms of build quality and reliability. The vendor states "..many believe that the w140 series was the “high water mark” of Mercedes vault like engineering excellence."

Sometimes old is gold, after all.

Overview

First registered on 26 January 1996, this V8-powered S500 coupé reportedly cost in excess of £76,000, and was purchased new by its one and only former keeper, who was a successful restauranteur.

Kept as his pride-and-joy, this S500 benefits from a full Mercedes main dealer service history from new-December 2013, and then marque specialist servicing from 2013-present.

Boasting numerous desirable options including a sun/moon roof, heated seats, cruise control, part-polished alloy wheels, double glazing and metallic Tourmalene paintwork, this is a fantastic example of the breed.

Prior to being purchased by our vendor in 2019, the following works were carried out:

- Full major service, including new spark plugs

- Gearbox oil and filter change

- New mass airflow sensor

- New central locking pump

- Fitment of new front and rear springs

- Fitment of four new Goodyear tyres

Following purchase in 2019, the car has covered around 500 miles per annum in the care of the current keeper, and has been lightly fettled, maintained by a local garage and had one or two small issues addressed, such as the cooling fans running constantly, and the a/c control unit and fascia replaced.

Despite plans to keep the car long-term alongside his other classic Mercedes, another high-end car purchase has forced the sale of this lovely S-Class coupé, meaning one lucky bidder has the opportunity to obtain a low-mileage, low-ownership example of the V8-powered C140.

Exterior

Finished in the eye-catching and unusual shade of Tourmalene, this S500 has been kept in good condition over the years, and generally presents well overall for its age and mileage.

Naturally, there are some signs of life dotted around the vehicle, though nothing that is seemingly too dramatic, nor anything that detracts from the classic pillar-less lines of this C140.

The bodywork is free of any obvious large dents, scuffs or accident damage, whilst the paintwork is generally in good order throughout, showing only light commensurate wear around areas such as the door handles, front bumper and door edges.

Looking closer, it would appear that the nearside rear wing and the offside lower door half show some flat paintwork, though the vendor is not aware of any bodywork / paintwork being carried out on the vehicle. There is also evidence of a touched-in area around the nearside rear light cluster, though this is largely hidden until looking up-close.

Elsewhere, the chrome trims around the windows have dulled over time but are all present-and-correct, as are the front and rear badges and side trims. The offside rear arch also displays a slight scuff/blemish, which has been detailed in the extensive photo gallery below.

All four wheels are in very good condition, with no kerb rash or damage to be noted from the images, and all four corners wear matching Continental rubber.

Interior

Stepping inside this classic 90’s Mercedes coupé is like stepping back in time, as the cabin has been wonderfully preserved by years of cherished ownership and careful use, racking up only just shy of 58,000 miles on the road.

All four seats are in excellent condition throughout, with no signs of any rips, tears or staining, and only some light creasing and minor marks to the outer edges to attest to years of service.

Up front, the dashboard, trims, centre console and wooden inlays are all in outstanding condition, with the only slight issue being that the nearside door wooden inlay is slightly coming away at the outer edge.

Above the occupants, the headliner is taut throughout and free of any noticeable marks, and the sunroof is in full working order with no sign of any leaks or waterproofing issues, nor any that have been reported to us.

All of the carpets and over mats are in great condition, whilst in the rear the boot presents well with only some minor marks and light usage wear visible to the carpets and plastic surrounds.

During our photo shoot, all systems were working as intended, with no fault lights, issues or problems reported by the vendor.

Mechanical

Under the bonnet, the 5.0-litre V8 engine presents well, with rich black plastics, clean metalworks and no signs of any major staining, leaks or issues that we could see, though we’ll concede that the majority of the block and its ancillaries are hidden underneath the large cover.

During our photo shoot, the car started with ease whether hot or cold, and settled into a smooth V8 idle. Out on the road, the transmission shifted seamlessly with no obvious jerking action, and no ‘knock’ when shifting between P/N and D/R. The cooling fans also worked as they should, with the car sitting nicely at an indicated 80 on the temperature gauge.

Looking underneath, the chassis and underside looks to be in very good order throughout, with only some light misting/moisture being visible on the rear differential casing. As always, we’ve provided an extensive selection of underside photographs for your assessment, which are included towards the end of the gallery below.

The most recent MoT took place on 13 April 2022, and resulted in a clean first-time pass with no advisory items, something that has been achieved every time since January 2019, no doubt helped by the current owner’s method of having the car given a full pre-examination check over, and any work addressed prior to testing.

History

Included with the vehicle is a neatly-organised history folder and information pack put together prior to the vendor’s purchased, with an itemised service history showing mostly M-B main dealer work, several invoices for other works carried out, a brief history of the W140/C140 model range, and other miscellaneous paperwork.

The V5 is present, showing just one former keeper, as are the full complement of Mercedes-Benz manuals and the original leather document wallet. Finally, the exceedingly rare radio code card remains with the documentation, something that this photographer has never actually seen with any of the W140/C140s that they’ve seen!

As always, all of the documentation has been photographed, and this is included in the gallery below.

Summary

With a legendary reputation for longevity and ‘over-engineering’ it’s no wonder that Mercedes’ of this era remain popular with enthusiasts and owners to this day, with a strong aftermarket support network and extensive online knowledge bases keeping these boxy wonders on the road.

Offered for sale from just the second private owner from new and with less than 60,000 miles on the odometer, this is a wonderfully useable example of the flagship pillar-less coupé, which is ready to use and enjoy to the fullest.

With an estimate of £11,000 to £16,000 this is an opportunity not to be missed by anyone looking for a well-kept, low mileage and low ownership 90’s Mercedes-Benz.
