Background

First unveiled at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show, the W221-model S-Class sat atop the Mercedes-Benz range during its seven-year production run, from 2006 to 2013. During this time, it found favour with the elite, wealthy and powerful of the world, including the President of Germany (who utilised an armoured S600 Guard model) and other heads of state.

Available from launch with a number of engines, trims, configurations and wheelbase lengths, it is hardly surprising that those with enough money to purchase such opulent and luxurious vehicles would then want to further customise them to their tastes. Whilst there are a multitude of aftermarket customisation houses out there, none are more intrinsically tied to the Mercedes-Benz brand than BRABUS.

Notably, the tuning program for the W221 offered by BRABUS more-or-less coincided with the launch of the standard vehicle, with a number of packages available to upgrade and customise the S-Class both aesthetically and visually.

Retaining the level of interior comfort and opulence expected from an S-Class, the packages instead focused on upgraded performance and external visual tweaks, including a redesigned front bumper with quad-lights, sports exhaust systems, carbon-fibre detailing, BRABUS-specific wheels, suspension system tweaks and engine tuning chips.

Overview

This particular BRABUS-tuned S-Class is an S320 turbodiesel V6 model, which has been fitted with the numerous upgrades from new, rather than being a pieced-together vehicle throughout its history.

Boasting the re-designed front bumper, BRABUS wheels, sports exhaust and extensive privacy glass, this example was purchased by the vendor around ten years ago and has formed an integral part of their car collection ever since, seeing considerate use, no-expense-spared maintenance and fastidious ownership.

In recent years, it has received new ABS rings, a new ABS sensor, a new throttle body, replacement brake pipes, and a major service in 2019 at 89,790 miles including a new turbo seal.

Now, with dwindling use due to other vehicles taking priority in the vendor’s collection, the time has come to move on this luxurious and head-turning S-Class for another enthusiast to enjoy.

Exterior

Stealthy, unassuming and under-the-radar save for a few choice BRABUS upgrades, this S-Class is every inch the unassuming luxury hero, and remains in good condition overall externally.

Perhaps the biggest criticism we’d have of the vehicle’s external condition is the paintwork, which has seemingly been previously machine-polished / DA’d to a poor standard, with a number of ‘ghost’ marks remaining in the paintwork, which can be seen prominently in the video at the base of this listing.

Elsewhere, there are the usual stone chips, minor marks and imperfections expected from a vehicle of this age and mileage, though there are no signs of any accident damage, badly mis-aligned panels or impacts that we could see.

Both front and rear bumpers also exhibit some light scratches, marks and blemishes, though no doubt a significant proportion of these would be removed at the same time as the aforementioned ‘ghost’ swirls are removed, should the vehicle be taken to a professional detailing company.

All of the chrome trims, badges and emblems are present-and-correct, and generally present well, though up-close some dulling and de-chroming is evident, particularly around the window trims.

Below the arches, all four of the KAHN ‘Diamond Edition’ wheels present in excellent condition, with no kerb rash or major marks to be aware of.

Interior

Inside, the interior remains largely as it would for a standard S-Class, with plenty of high-grade leather, numerous technologies that were considered cutting-edge at the time of their release, and a general feel of luxury and opulence throughout the well-equipped cabin.

Generally speaking, the interior presents in very good condition throughout, which is testament to not only the gentle and considered use the vehicle has enjoyed throughout its lifetime, but also to the level of fit-and-finish achieved by Mercedes at the time of production.

Looking around the cabin, the various wooden inlays and details remain in excellent shape, with no major lacquer peel or damage to the gloss finish, and no missing trims noted during our photo shoot. Similarly, the steering wheel, centre console and dashboard clock remain in great shape, with the former only displaying some light usage patina consistent with the vehicle’s age and mileage.

Elsewhere, there are some signs of wear-and-tear to high-traffic areas such as the inner door sill covers, door cards (particularly on the lower half of the front doors) and some creasing/scuffing noted to the leather seat covers, though there were no signs of any rips, tears or damage that we could see.

As far as we could tell, all systems worked correctly, including the manual suspension lift system activated by the switch on the upper dashboard.

We did, however, note an occasional warning ‘beep’ and three sets of orange/red warning lines on the dashboard above the speedometer reading which we beleive is the parking sensors being overly sensitive.

As for all of the vehicles we have here at HQ, we encourage you to view the vehicle in-person, and you can make an appointment to do so by using the ‘contact seller’ button above.

Mechanical

Under the bonnet, the turbocharged diesel V6 engine looks to be in good health, though our view is somewhat obstructed by the all-encompassing engine cover.

That said, there were no signs of any oil or fluid leaks that we could see, nor any visual signs of damage and everything looked to be in its right-and-proper place.

We could see no sign of any visual issues relating to the aforementioned hissing noise from the front offside suspension when standing from looking underneath the arch, and there has been no mention of this in any of the documentation or paperwork we’ve seen.

As we’ve already mentioned, the car was given a major service (including new glow plugs) in 2019, at 89,790 miles, meaning a mileage-based service won’t be required any time soon.

The most recent MoT exam, dated 07 September 2021, shows a clean first-time pass with no advisory items.

Looking underneath the car, we can see no cause for concern, with only scuffed under trays and typical corrosion to the exhaust system being worthy of any note.

History

Included with the vehicle is the V5 registered keepers document showing three former keepers, a partially-stamped service record, invoice for the most recent major service (including turbo seal another works) numerous other invoices for works carried out to the vehicle over the years, old tax discs, MoT certificates and a selection of handbooks.

Summary

Head-turning to those ‘in the know’ but otherwise able to move through traffic and city streets virtually undetected, this 2007 BRABUS S320 presents in good condition overall, with room for further refinement of the paintwork to take it to the next level of presentation.

Offered for sale with an estimate of £10,000 to £15,000 and ready to use-and-enjoy, this tweaked and upgraded S320 would make for the ideal continent-crushing daily driver, especially at a time when fuel economy is at the forefront of our minds!
