Background
Everyone knows about the G-Class; it's a bit out there, especially the modern versions, but in all honesty, it's one of the maddest yet purposeful cars around. A V8 shoe-horned into an SUV might not be the craziest idea today, but in the noughties, there weren't too many carmakers doing that, or at least not all such SUVs were bestowed with a performance-orientated approach. The G55 AMG was made when Affalterbach's finest had been brought in-house, but unlike today where you have an AMG Line or AMG version of nearly every product Mercedes-Benz sells. The G55 continued to be the popular AMG version of the G-Class until it was replaced by the G 63.
The one thing that made the Gelandewagen a huge phenomenon was its ability to go off-road, complemented by its nearly indestructible appearance. Whatever the AMG model got seemed to be a contrast of that, with a high-performance engine, large wheels with relatively low profile (when compared to its utilitarian brethren), and a chiselled three-piece suit that you wouldn't want a spot of dust on, let alone a splatter of mud. But in reality, the G-Class AMG can do a variety of things including attacking bad or no roads; it might not be a marine from its attire but it sure is a double-o agent straight out of an Ian Fleming spy novel — and it wouldn't mind kicking some butt (or mud)!
