Background

Everyone knows about the G-Class; it's a bit out there, especially the modern versions, but in all honesty, it's one of the maddest yet purposeful cars around. A V8 shoe-horned into an SUV might not be the craziest idea today, but in the noughties, there weren't too many carmakers doing that, or at least not all such SUVs were bestowed with a performance-orientated approach. The G55 AMG was made when Affalterbach's finest had been brought in-house, but unlike today where you have an AMG Line or AMG version of nearly every product Mercedes-Benz sells. The G55 continued to be the popular AMG version of the G-Class until it was replaced by the G 63.

The one thing that made the Gelandewagen a huge phenomenon was its ability to go off-road, complemented by its nearly indestructible appearance. Whatever the AMG model got seemed to be a contrast of that, with a high-performance engine, large wheels with relatively low profile (when compared to its utilitarian brethren), and a chiselled three-piece suit that you wouldn't want a spot of dust on, let alone a splatter of mud. But in reality, the G-Class AMG can do a variety of things including attacking bad or no roads; it might not be a marine from its attire but it sure is a double-o agent straight out of an Ian Fleming spy novel — and it wouldn't mind kicking some butt (or mud)!

Overview

The YCZ 663 is a Kuwait-import 2007 Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG with zero former UK keepers. In total, it's had three previous owners, who have, over the decade and a half of ownership, run the car for nearly 124,000 miles. Records for all the repairs and refurbishments carried out under the vendor's ownership are present, however, the service records from the previous owner are missing, although it was regularly serviced. The all-white car also got a G63 makeover and is now running on 20-inch wheels. As far as the condition is concerned, it's top-notch, with only a handful of niggles that can be easily solved.

Exterior

Manufactured in Graz, the G-Wagen (later referred to as the G-Class) has epitomised sturdy build quality, a rather unconventional approach in design, and as is the case with the G55 AMG, a pretty non-standard appearance in comparison to other SUVs. Its popularity especially among the affluent means that the G-Class is far from a rare sight but its non-conformist styling does help it stand out. What works really well in its favour is that Mercedes-Benz, despite major advancements in the field of aerodynamics and body design, didn't move too far from the original car's appearance. So while it may have turned 40 a handful of years ago, it doesn't need to be parked next to the first model from the late 70s to showcase the resemblance.

This 2007 example is painted white, which does suit the car. As can be seen in the photos, it now has a G 63 body kit, complete with the correct (for the G 63) 20-inch wheels. Although it does wear a G63 badge at the rear, its 'V8 Kompressor' on the wings is correct. The bodywork looks clean but there are minute marks on the paint — some are hardly noticeable while others appear to be a sign of use like on the rear bumper. Let's not forget that the car has done nearly 124,000 miles, so that is expected. There's also some rust around the sunroof, scratch marks on the roof, and scuff marks on the AMG wheels.

Interior

While the G-Class has an intimidating appearance, the cabin needed to be accommodating and luxurious, because it is, even though made by Magna Steyr, a Mercedes-Benz, after all. The interior of the W463 G-Class did exude luxury through, but not limited to just the materials, design, overall fit, etc. Plus you throw in extra/optional goodies like the Designo spec, and that makes the G even better. While it may not necessarily make you jump from the rear seat of an S-Class, the G-Class does display a very strong dual, versatile character.

The G55 was specced well when new and had the optional 'Designo' pack. The cabin has retained its condition despite the age and mileage; and it does continue to look marvellous, the G55's dashboard layout. The seats don't look too bad, either, but they do have signs of wear. The headlining looks very good and the AC works well. We did note that the plastic surrounding the climate controls & air vents has gone a little sticky in the Middle Eastern sun. Some of the plastics have deteriorated — like the one on the driver's seat, where the seat belt goes, is cracked.

Some of the equipment like powered seats, sunroof, radio/sat nav don't work but the vendor, who is a trader, mentions that this is likely to be a fuse-related issue. They had a battery change done recently, and the vendor is confident that replacing the affected fuses will take care of that.

Mechanical

The G55 is a surprising car: an AMG SUV which makes nearly 500 hp and one that doesn't fall short in its ability to slow down or make quick progress effectively. It does all of that well, and while not exactly like an innately interactive sports car, it can still offer bursts of acceleration, ensuring that nobody in the cabin gets bored. Ever.

The 5.4-litre M113 V8 engine was fitted with a mechanical supercharger, as a result of which, this 493 bhp and 700 Nm producing unit could send shock waves through the atmosphere — and also propel the G55 to 62 mph in less than six seconds. For a vehicle weighing well over two tonnes, that's a lot of performance! All-wheel drive was standard, and the gearbox of choice was a 5-speed automatic.

This G-Class's vendor has got a plethora of repairs and replacements done at a Mercedes-Benz specialist. A major service was also carried out, all the plugs, injector o-rings, oils, fluids, pipes, gaskets, the windscreen, etc. were replaced. It also got a new battery (with a 3-year warranty), new tyres, etc. The detailed invoices from both Kuwait and the UK are in the Documents section of the photo gallery. The vendor says that the car was also given a new starter motor and an electronic ignition switch, and regarding the driving experience, adds: "It's almost 500 bhp so very quick for a big car."

The G55 has a slightly rough idle at lower revs but this is unnoticeable when the revs pick up. There isn’t an Engine Management Light but the vendor mentions that it's an issue due to a faulty coil pack and it couldn't be rectified earlier due to the required part not being in stock. We noticied that the bonnet struts appear to be past their best & do not support the bonnet up. The underbody condition doesn't appear to be a matter of concern.

History

Manufactured and delivered in 2007, this Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG has been in Kuwait before being imported into the UK. Given the previous service records were missing, the car underwent a full inspection by a Mercedes specialist, and anything required, was fixed or replaced including general maintenance. On top of what’s been mentioned, the G55 also had following: steering pump overhaul, 2x Rocker cover gaskets replaced, new 2x oil sump cover gaskets, a new oil level sensor, gearbox gasket repair and service. As part of the major service, the differential oils were replaced, and the car also had a brake fluid change at Mercedes. It has three former keepers excluding the vendor, a private registration is included as part of the sale, and its G 63 look makes it appear slightly more modern. It has done 123931 miles and has a valid MoT certificate, which it passed without any advisory.

Summary

The fact that the G-Class is a very cool car is no surprise, and a well-specced AMG version makes things even better. This example is a well-used one, but a substantial amount of maintenance carried out ensures it's in good shape. It's largely rust-free, which is a solid point in its favour, too.

At an estimated £25,000 - £32,000, the LHD 2007 Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG is an opportunity to own a desirable car that's been looked after well in the past. Plus with the ridiculous amount of performance it offers, it can not only shame a lot of modern metal but will do that without losing the ability to explore new, unpaved roads.
