Background

The Mercedes G Series, or G Wagon as it is more lovingly known, has one of the most diverse and colourful histories of any model of car from any manufacturer, spanning a 40 + year production life. Originally developed following a suggestion by the Shah of Iran, its initial purpose was to be a military vehicle much like its British counterpart, the Land Rover. It was subsequently tested in the most difficult of environments of the Sahara Desert, German Coalfields and the Arctic Circle. With such vigorous testing, it’s hardly a surprise many examples have lasted this long.

Overview

The current owner of the G55 has a business importing vehicles out of Kuwait to the UK and found this car being sold by a businessman in the country. The car was purchased and then imported into the UK, but not before it had undergone thorough investigative work to ensure the car was in the best condition it could be. Any issues found on the vehicle were fixed in the country before export, and you can see in the gallery below details of any works carried out. This G55 has very contemporary and modern looks and as such comes with a list of additional options that were chosen at the time of sale. These additional options are Xenon lights, rare front & rear cupholders (a must have), rear view camera, front & rear heated seats, sidesteps, burred walnut veneer trim and ‘Designo Brown’ leather interior. These additional extras just add to the appeal of this good looking 4x4.

Exterior

The exterior of the G wagon certainly doesn’t lack presence, with the almost monster truck proportions commanding respect from other commuters. The paintwork is a pearlescent white with black accents and suits the boxy shape of the 4x4 down to the ground. It is worth mentioning that there a few stone chips on the bonnet and right rear corner, however this would be a small job for a local paint correction specialist or body shop and doesn’t detract too much from the stunning pearlescent paintwork. The rest of this popular 4x4 is very presentable indeed, especially the 10 spoke, 20” ‘Spider’ alloy wheels, which are in fantastic condition with very little curbing or damage, wrapped in good rubber to see you through many miles. There is also a tiny area of lacquer peel on the passenger side A pillar, but we estimate that it is only around 2cm x 1cm.

Moving around this car we see the fit and finish of the panels all around to be good and to a quality which you would expect from Mercedes-Benz, the windows are all in good condition as is the trim, plastics and brightwork with no fading, cracking or damage to note. All electrics work around the car, and all light lenses are in fine fettle with no hazing, cracks or chips to speak of. The back of the vehicle sees the spare wheel and the spare wheel cover, both in good condition with very little wear and tear to either. What can be seen however is the rubber seal for the rear door, which is hanging down outside of the car, this may be due to a worn rubber seal or broken retainer clips for the weather/noise seal to attach to the door. Either way a small, quick and cheap fix, we’re sure. We did also note that the driver electric seat does not currently work, but it is fixed in a very reasonable position, so it can be driven before it is fixed. Also, the electric sunroof doesn't always open all of the way, it sometimes stops when half way open.

The G wagon certainly responded well to the spruce up Mercedes gave the model and this 2008-year example has continued to age well with its looks and styling still holding up in the ever-changing landscape of the automotive design language we see on the roads today. This is a good-looking example with the right colour combination and wheel choice and with a minimal amount of sprucing up could look better than new.

Interior

Inside the G wagon is a symphony of tan leather luxury, accented beautifully with wooden veneer around the interior door furniture and dashboard. The interior of this luxury 4x4 is a welcome mix of Mercedes signature indulgence as well as hints this car means business, imagine if you will a German Range Rover, if its suitable to compare the two. The upholstery and trim have held out very well, as you’d expect a car like this to, there hardly seems to be any wear or tear across any of the seats, with all bolsters looking to be holding out well. There is only the tiniest indication of wear and tear on some of the highest traffic and main touch point areas such as the steering wheel and gear selector. A slight wear of the leather trim on these two would benefit from some leather feed and a clean but we doubt they would need re-trimming.

All buttons, dials and screens work as intended inside the cabin, and the control centre is within easy reach of the driver and passenger. The carpet and door trims are all in fantastic condition also with little to no marks to be seen around the vehicle, especially in the boot, which has a rubber protective mat to keep the carpet in good condition. The dog cage separator also works well, sliding easily and locking into place securely. For a utilitarian vehicle to have this level of luxury and to pull it off so convincingly is no mean feat, but the G wagon has done just that. This example is a pleasant place to be whilst inside and it’s nice to have a reminder when you step up into the car, that this particular G wagon is no slouch with the AMG emblazoned step guards.

Mechanical

At the business end of the G wagon, all looks well, with lots of well-engineered and hardy components to keep you moving whatever the terrain, the underside of this Mercedes looks in good health. All workings underneath the G wagon have very little wear or rust to speak of and with the aid of plastic liners and protection from the elements in the form of stone chip, hard wearing paint, the underside of this 111,000-mile car has held up very well indeed. The frame rails on the underside look in great condition with no missing paint, which indicated this car hasn’t seen the rough off-road trials but more likely motorway and commuter miles which should put the prospective buyer at ease as this kind of work is well withing the G wagon’s comfort zone.

Under the bonnet, which is where this G wagon stands out from the rest of its peers, is the supercharged V8, 5439cc engine, putting out 500bhp at 5500 rpm, catapulting this rugged box from 0-60 is only 5.5 seconds. Whichever way you put it, that’s very quick for a car such as this and certainly follows the MO of the Mercedes in house tuning company, AMG. With this car, you’ll be pleased to hear that the engine looks to be in great condition and with sensible mileage from this 13-year-old car, the engine is more than likely in excellent health with plenty of life left in it for showing up unsuspecting sports car. All wires and pipes in the bay look in good condition with no rusting, corrosion or splitting. Mercedes have done an excellent job routing all the wiring safely out of the way of any elements or heat and as such it all seems to be in good condition. There are no signs of any oil leaks or coolant eruptions and the belts and pulleys all appear to have lots of life left in them before they need changing.

Back to the underside and a few more things to mention, the brakes discs look like they many miles left in them before they’re in need of changing, and the car also sports some upmarket shocks manufactured by Bilstein, a well-respected name in the automotive world. All in all, the condition of the underside of this G wagon mirrors the exterior and should give buyers peace of a mind. It is also worth mentioning that all locking differentials work as intended as well as the other off road and terrain adjustment systems.

History

The previous owner was a businessman and owned a few cars which is common in Kuwait. This was his family car which he owned since 2012. The mileage is relatively low as it wasn’t his daily drive. He claimed to have serviced it regularly but as it’s common in Kuwait, he didn’t keep any service records.

Therefore, when the seller bought it earlier in the year, it had a thorough inspection done and had all necessary repair works and more for peace of mind.

The seller has kindly explained that the currency exchange is £1=2.5kd so you’ll see that as a fair bit of money was spent on essential repairs and maintenance work.

As mentioned, the car underwent a thorough mechanical investigation in Kuwait before being shipped to the UK and the paperwork is present to back up the extensive exploratory works. Details of the works are as follows:

- Full engine, suspension & drivetrain inspection – Express Car Service – 26.04.21

- Fuel Filter replaced – Express Car Service – 26.04.21

In recent years, the G Wagon also had a full G63 bodystyling makeover including bumpers, grille, lights, wing mirrors and alloys which we think suits the car perfectly.

Summary

One of Mercedes' crowning jewels and longest running models, the G Wagon has well and truly attained cult status with countless variations and models gaining love from farmers to famous Hollywood stars alike.

The G wagon’s production has run from its first civilian offering in 1979 to the present day with Mercedes-Benz surpassing 400,000 units produced in 2020. It has been one of the longest running and most successful vehicles for Mercedes during its history with only the ‘Unimog’ surpassing it.

As a result of this, the G wagon has gained cult status and has had endless variations and body styles. This model offered here for auction is great example of the marque and comes with the desired AMG stamp of lunacy that makes this car just that bit more special. The vehicle has undergone works to give it a clean bill of health and is ready just in time for Christmas, I’m sure you’ll agree that this would make one hell of a Christmas present for Santa to leave under (over) the tree.

We estimate for this Mercedes G Wagon to reach anywhere between £25,000 - £35,000.
