Background
Today's Mercedes G-Wagen has long been associated with wealth and status and has quickly become the go-to urban SUV for those who demand both luxury and an all-conquering presence on the road. Indeed, the G-Wagen of today has developed a very long way from its original military roots, when its off-load ability and ruggedness was far more important than heated leather seats, satellite navigation and other such mod cons. Daimler-Benz first introduced the original G-Class in 1979 and it was developed jointly with Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Austria. Originally called the “Wolf”, its was designed as a robust military off-roader. It was first deployed to Argentina in 1981 and has since seen service in 45 countries around the world.
One such country to receive the military version of the Austrian built G-Wagen was Singapore, and it is from this very country that this 1990 Mercedes G-Wagen hails.
