Background

The E220 coupe was based on the W124 model and as such benefits from all the accolades attributed to the base saloon. Mercedes developed the first E class over many years and at a huge cost from 1976, debuting the car in 1984 in a bid to dominate the market. The W124 was an extraordinarily well-built car and came equipped with lots of market leading equipment and technology as well as being a handsome, luxurious cruiser.

The W124 was the epitome of an understatement with sophisticated chassis engineering, class leading aerodynamics, and record setting safety features. The design of the car was meant to last as long as the rest of the vehicle and when the last examples came off the production line, they fitted the rest of the automotive design landscape at the time.

These cars have developed a huge following of admiring enthusiasts over the lifespan of the vehicle, it really was a car to do it all. The model was also expanded to incorporate an estate, saloon and convertible to capitalise on the market of people who wanted a luxurious, comfortable, good-looking car that would be as functional and adaptable as it was reliable.

Overview

Having owned the Mercedes since last year, the owner’s intention was to keep it in Ireland, however with the cost of import being unfeasible, the owner has decided to send it back to the UK. The owner has fixed the car up for road use and put it through its MOT in 2023 and 2024, meaning the car now has a ticket valid until 11th Jan 2025.

Having only done just over 100,000 miles, the E220 is relatively low mileage for its 30+ years one the road. It has a good amount of service history and is ready for its new owner.

Exterior

With traditional, instantly recognisable Mercedes looks this E220 coupe looks to be in good overall condition with straight panels and no reported missing trim. There are a few areas of the paintwork that will require some work, like the roof for example, and a section around the door handle which you can see from the gallery has some lacquer peel. There is the odd paint chip and mark around the rest of the vehicle too.

The wheels look to have been restored at some point or have remained in great condition shod in 4 Goodyear tyres, which look to have a good amount of tread depth left.

Trim around the car, especially the front chrome grille is a little pitted but not excessive and the plastics look to be in good shape and we imagine a once over with a plastic restore kit would bring them back up to a deep black sheen.

The rest of the car presents well without being perfect, some areas could do with some loving attention but from what is visible there looks to be a pleasant absence of corrosion than you’d expect from a car of this age.

Interior

The interior is in great condition with only a few areas of wear visible on the usual high traffic places, such as the driver’s outer upright bolster and the piping on the centre front armrest. There is the odd mark here and there throughout as would be inevitable on cream leather but there are no obvious or reported rips, tears, burns or stains.

The carpet throughout the car, including the boot, looks to be in good condition, has not worn thin or been stained with mud or oil save from a tiny section in the boot which is less than the expected wear and tear considering the age of the car.

The dash looks to be free from cracks or UV discolouration and the wooden inserts around the dash and centre console look to be in good condition too with no reported lacquer peel either.

All electronics are reported to be working in the cabin and the luxury Mercedes features such as the automatic reaching seatbelts remain in good working order.

Mechanical

The odometer reads 106,547 miles and the engine bay looks to be reassuringly clean. The MOT was completed on the 12th January this year and the car has only done around 30 miles since. There were 5 advisory notes from the tester but nothing seemingly out of the ordinary for a vehicle of this age.

The 2.2 litre, 149 bhp, inline 4 is mated to a 4 speed automatic gearbox and was designed to waft you to your destination with the least amount of fuss.

The car has had an advisory on corrosion in 2023 but the paperwork shows that the owner had much of the MOT issues remedied before re-testing in 2024 where that was not flagged as an advisory again.

The photo gallery shows little corrosion to the exterior body and no reports of fluid leaks or any damage to the engine or ancillaries.

In conclusion, everything looks to be in good working order, maintained to a good level and keep in good shape as one would expect from a conscientious owner.

History

The Mercedes comes with a good amount of service history with service books and owner’s manuals, MOT test records, receipts for work carried out and regular servicing records. The car has also had a full HPI check completed which you can see more of in the photo gallery.

Stand out documents include a recent invoice to carry out MOT failure repairs and perform a full service on the 6th January 2023.

Records show servicing completed at the regular intervals every year until 2007, then recorded again for 2011 in the record book. The HPI check also shows regular MOTs for similar time periods.

Summary

The W124 is placed very well to become an appreciating future classic, the level of craftsmanship and design excellence that Mercedes poured into this chassis is something that will put it in good stead for years to come with regards to price and a loyal fanbase.

This coupe is relatively low mileage compared to what owners report they have achieved with these cars. There is room in the estimate also, for someone to sort any little bits out around the car and to add their own flare to whilst returning this interesting, well built, handsome luxury car to its best.

We are happy to offer this vehicle for auction with an estimate in the range of £4,000 - £5,000.
