“ Rare V12 - 64K Miles - Well Maintained ”

Value for money, the CL600 is an absolute bargain of a car! It has everything going for it; just two previous keepers, it has low mileage, the bodywork is excellent, the interior is luxurious and in superb condition, plus you have the impressive 5.8 litre V12 hiding under the bonnet, which has the technology to shut half of the engine down to save fuel, does it really get any better?

Background

1998 saw the launch of the C215, the second generation of the CL-Class coupé. Based on the W220 S-Class chassis, the new CL has an eight-inch shorter wheelbase. In addition, it brought with it cutting-edge technology offering advanced safety features and more convenience features to compete with other luxury car manufacturers such as Bentley and Rolls Royce.

Competing with some of the best meant the Mercedes needed something special under the bonnet. It didn’t disappoint with the fantastic V12 powerhouse and some of the most technological advances, which drove the company into the modern era by creating one of the best cars money could buy.

With the engine firmly in place, the styling is also exceptional, with the pillarless windows seen on various models throughout Mercedes' history at various points. This gives a fantastic sleek, luxurious and stylish look which emphasises that you are driving something quite special.

Overview

If you are looking for something which offers comfort, luxury and excellent performance, look no further than the Mercedes CL600 (C215).

The Mercedes has pretty much everything you need and expect from a luxury car designed to compete against other luxurious car makers. Mercedes didn't hold back when it came to speccing the CL600, as you will find out shortly.

How does a low-mileage, two-owner car with just 63,936 miles covered, backed up with service history and in superb condition sound? Read on to find out more.

Exterior

Finished in Brilliant Silver Metallic, the Mercedes presents exceptionally well. The paintwork is in excellent condition, with no apparent chips or scratches to point out. There may be the odd one on the front end, but these are in keeping with the mileage and are few and far between.

The bodywork is also superb, with no dings or dents. The soft-close doors work as they should, as does the electric opening boot lid. All of the panels are straight and even with a matching panel gap.

The Bi-xenon headlights work correctly, and the lenses are free from any damage. Lower down, and the fog lights are also damage-free, as are the rear light clusters.

Eliminating any possibility of draught or noise, the double-glazed windows are free of noticeable scratches and operate as they should, revealing the pillarless coupe in all its glory when down. The windscreen has no chips or damage, and the window seals around the car all appear to be in good order.

Fitted with five-spoke AMG two-piece wheels, these are in good order with no apparent signs of corrosion or kerb damage. The tyres fitted are matching Dunlop SP Sport with an excellent amount of tread remaining.

Interior

Luxury was the order of the day in 2001 when the Mercedes spec list was chosen. The Black/Anthracite leather upholstery is in excellent condition throughout. The electric seats are both working correctly and have minimal wear. The rear seat is also superb and doesn’t seem to have had much use over the years. Both the door cards are free from any scuffs, and the relevant switches for the memory control seats are in good condition.

More leather across the dashboard which is all nice and clean with no scuffs on the upper or lower sections. The steering wheel is finished in Burred Walnut and leather, which has a tiny amount of age-related shine to the leather sections of the rim, but nothing excessive. The instruments work as expected, with no warning lights displaying when the engine is running, and the odometer showing a reading of just 63,936 miles.

The Burred Walnut trim is in superb condition in the middle of the dashboard, with no cracking or delamination. This panel holds most of the switches for the Mercedes, which are all said to work as they should and are in excellent condition. The standard head-unit, boot-mounted CD multiplayer and satellite navigation system are in place with the optional Bose speakers fitted. Although the Sat Nav operates, it could probably do with being updated if you were to use it, but a mobile phone is more of a popular choice these days.

Looking up, the headlining is clean and tidy with no sagging, and the sunroof works correctly, tilting and sliding. The carpets are excellent, and there is a complete set of factory-fit Mercedes mats in equally good condition. As you’ve probably guessed, inside the boot presents well, just like the rest of the car. The spare wheel is present along with the tool kit and jack.

Mechanical

At the time, there were very few cars to feature the incredible and technologically advanced 5.8 lite V12 engine. Producing 362hp and 391lb-ft of torque, the V12 is a precision piece of engineering which is simply amazing. To give you an idea of how advanced the engine is, the Mercedes shuts down six cylinders using the ZAS Cylinder Cut-out System at low revs to improve fuel consumption and reduce emissions.

Press the button, listen for the sound of what’s like a small motor and within a second, your ears are graced with the harmonic sound of the V12. The car runs without issues and pulls strongly through the gears, as expected. The automatic gearbox provides a smooth, effortless change going both up and down the gears.

The suspension was also very advanced for the time (and, in reality, it still is today). The ABC suspension is all working as it should, and the car sits level, with no knocks or bangs reported to come from either corner of the CL.

Bringing the CL600 to a halt, the cross-drilled front discs look to be in good condition with no apparent signs of a lip indicating high wear. In addition, they are said to bring the car to a stop in a straight line with no juddering coming through the pedal.

History

The CL600 has an excellent history file, complete with the owner's handbooks and the service book showing eight stamps, with the last service at 63175 miles. There are also two other invoices showing services carried out by independent specialists. It is worth noting that the last service had the ABC service carried out and also a gearbox service.

Several previous MoT certificates are included which help verify the low mileage covered, especially in the past five years.

Please note the private registration number in the photos is now removed from the car, and the original has been put back on, which is Y813 WFC.

Summary

Value for money, the CL600 is an absolute bargain of a car! It has everything going for it; just two previous keepers, it has low mileage, the bodywork is excellent, the interior is luxurious and in superb condition, plus you have the impressive 5.8 litre V12 hiding under the bonnet, which has the technology to shut half of the engine down to save fuel, does it really get any better?

If you are still not convinced, the car comes with an extensive spec sheet featuring cruise control, Parktronic system, Bose audio, keyless start, pretty much everything you could ask for and more in 2001.

We estimate this German bruiser will fetch in the region of £10,000- £15,000.
