Background
The Mercedes W140 series S Class was the flagship model of the range from 1991 until 1998 and was the most over engineered car on the the market. It was available as a standard or long wheelbase saloon and as the pillar less coupe seen here.
Designed under the great Bruno Sacco, launch was delayed 18 months when BMW revealed the V12 E32 7 Series, allowing Mercedes to develop their V12 flagship. It is known as the last Mercedes to be a true engineer’s car, over engineered and developed at cost of $1 billion. the cost and time over runs costing the chief engineer his job.
It was the most advanced and luxurious car you could buy in the early ‘90s with features such as double glazed windows, 12 way electric seats and one of the first cars to feature adaptive dampers and to use a CAN Bus system.
They are rare now as the car was launched into the global recession of the early ‘90s so slow sales meant later Mercedes were never as solidly engineered with later cars chasing volume over exclusivity.
