Background

The Mercedes W140 series S Class was the flagship model of the range from 1991 until 1998 and was the most over engineered car on the the market. It was available as a standard or long wheelbase saloon and as the pillar less coupe seen here.

Designed under the great Bruno Sacco, launch was delayed 18 months when BMW revealed the V12 E32 7 Series, allowing Mercedes to develop their V12 flagship. It is known as the last Mercedes to be a true engineer’s car, over engineered and developed at cost of $1 billion. the cost and time over runs costing the chief engineer his job.

It was the most advanced and luxurious car you could buy in the early ‘90s with features such as double glazed windows, 12 way electric seats and one of the first cars to feature adaptive dampers and to use a CAN Bus system.

They are rare now as the car was launched into the global recession of the early ‘90s so slow sales meant later Mercedes were never as solidly engineered with later cars chasing volume over exclusivity.

Overview

This is a solid and well kept example of the rare V12 coupe. It is a vast behemoth of a car, being painted black goes some way to hiding its proportions but you cant ignore the shear size of this two door four seater.

The creamy beige upholstery is sumptuous and the car is loaded with every option imaginable in 1993, and finished in the best quality materials. With only 95,000 miles it was barely touched the mileage these machines are capable of.

The current owner has a small collection of large and rapid cars like this and so it has seen little use in the seven years he has owned it, covering barely 850 miles between the last two MOTs so it hasn’t needed anything beyond oil services recently, which is why he is selling as he feels the 600 should be driven more. The previous owner had used it more extensively and the car wanted for nothing with many receipts for work and parts keeping it top condition and the Mercedes Benz Club sticker is another clue it has been cherished.

The subtle style is elegant and timeless, transcending fashion and now a beautiful example of a masterpiece of engineering

Exterior

The black paint was applied deep and smooth in Stuttgart, and 27 years later is still in excellent shape with very few marks. Unsurprisingly with such a large car the bumpers do have small scuffs on the corners, and there are a couple of tiny dimples in the drivers door, only visible when the light catches at the right angle

Predating parking sensors by a very short time this instead has ‘parking guide rods’ which extend from the rear corners of the wings so you can see the cars extremities!

The alloys are all in good condition with no kerb marks or peeling lacquer and are shod in matching Bridgstone Potenza tyres. There is a receipt for fitting in 2010, but the car has been kept garaged for most of the time since then and they have good tread remaining, and matching quality brand tyres are always a sign of a well kept car.

The W140 was one of, if not the, first cars to be fitted with double glazed windows and the coupe is pillarless, with all four side windows dropping away to give a fully open side, and it has an electric sunroof which works correctly, alongside a legacy mobile phone antenna, the ultimate statement of social position in the early ’90s!

The car is fitted with soft close boot and doors. The bottom of the drivers door does have some rust on the lower surface, normally hidden but worth addressing as soon as possible, and like all Mercedes, has the ‘service position’ on the bonnet hinge allowing it open to vertical to make working on the vast motor easier.

Interior

The beige leather seats have almost no wear and have the 12 way adjustable memory function with multi level heating; the light carpets are superb unworn condition, as are the dark wood inserts on the dash and doors.

The grey controls and interior surfaces are the heavy rubberised plastic drivers of older Mercedes will be familiar with, a durable and quality material Mercedes made good use of in the days when their cars refused to break.

Occupants are treated to dual zone air conditioning, a Becker Mexico radio with more speakers than we could count and an aftermarket Bluetooth adapter is fitted. Even the seat belts are delivered to the front passengers as the doors close!

In the back, there is a an electrically raising rear sunshade and rear passengers are separated by a wood topped cubby and a large arm rest, and are treated to electrically raising headrests.

The condition is almost like new inside the car, even the first aid kit is untouched on the rear shelf.

Mechanical

The floor pan looks to be in solid condition and there is a 2010 receipt for £900 for a pair of catalysts and cat back exhaust, around which time there are also records for repairs to vacuum hoses, ignition coils, sensors and even a new antenna suggesting someone wanted to make the car as perfect as possible.

Since then the car has done very few miles and has been dry stored so the current and next owner can still benefit from this periods fastidious care.

History

The current mileage is just 95,548 miles and looking back to 2013 it has covered only a few hundred miles each year. It has just passed a new MOT so is good until June 2021 with just a few advisories for light misting of oil on the shocks but with limited feet on damping, slight play in the auto roll bar ball joints and slight corrosion to two brake hoses, nothing to panic about but worth looking at in the next year.

The previous owner lavished care and expense on the Mercedes, giving it premium tyres, new cats and exhaust and lots of small issues being fixed. Prior to that it had been in the main dealer network.

Summary

This is an incredible machine. Few V12 coupes were sold in the UK so its a rare modern classic, and a masterpiece of automotive engineering. Every car enthusiast should own a V12 at some point and they don't come better than this.

Overall the condition is excellent and with only a couple of small issues to take care of, this is a great opportunity to own a very special car, and as being offered at No Reserve, it will be selling from the very first bid.
