“ This is an immaculate super-saloon, fitted with the ever-desirable 6.9 litre V8 engine ”

The W116 remains highly sought after, not just being the highly collectable first entry of an impressive S-Class model range, but also for being a truly brilliant platform to own and drive. The 450 SEL 6.9 takes this platform to another realm, offering the top-of-the-line specification available and brilliant collection potential.

Background

Long known for innovative technology, lavish comforts, and legendary German build quality, Mercedes-Benz has an impressive legacy under its belt. Among its four-wheeled creations sit the legendary S-Class, a top-of-the-line series of full-sized luxury sedans and coupés spanning an impressive production run, officially beginning with the W116 in 1972.

The W116 was a dramatic leap forward in terms of styling for the marque, contributing to a handsome executive-esque design that bore sporty tones, even taking inspiration from the R107 SL-Class roadster. Alongside its admirable design, the W116 also made waves with innovative tech, being the first Mercedes-Benz to feature a hydropneumatic suspension system. It also introduced four-wheel anti-lock brakes, as well as a strengthened structure and additional changes to further protect passengers in the event of a collision.

With an array of drivetrain configurations and models on offer, the W116 proved to be a tremendous success, later paving the way for future S Class variants as we know them. Over 470 thousand units were produced throughout the W116’s production run, and the platform remains incredibly desirable today. Out of those models available, enthusiasts and collectors do, of course, hunt for the 450 SEL 6.9, being the Crème de la crème of W116 models.

Overview

Amidst the W116 lineup, the 450 SEL 6.9 remains highly regarded as the best model on offer, thanks to its massive 6.9-litre M100 V8 engine; a powerplant derived from the iconic Mercedes 600 limousine. The 450 SEL also came standard with Mercedes-Benz’s new hydropneumatic suspension system, which contributes to an incredibly smooth and comfortable ride.

For several years, the 450 SEL 6.9 was the quickest-accelerating and fastest saloon in the world, quietly putting flamboyant rivals to shame in classy fashion. Today, it remains a fantastic showcase of the Mercedes ethos, reflecting a time where advancements in performance, styling, comfort, safety, build quality, and technology were paramount. As such, it remains atop the bucket list of many a collector and enthusiast, and for very good reason.

Presented with just 5 former keepers and 88k on the clock, this particular example proves just how rewarding 450 SEL 6.9 ownership is. It’s finished in a stunning blue colourway and offers excellent mechanical health, with plenty of history to show. As far as useable, yet well preserved W116s go, this is without a doubt a worthy consideration for enthusiasts looking for a blast from the past.

Exterior

The W116’s 450 SEL styling remains rather iconic; a sleek, low-slung design packed with classy touches, and guaranteed to stand out amidst dreary modern traffic. Despite the impressive powerplant hidden under the bonnet, the exterior is rather conservative, proving that performance needn’t be expressed with aggressive styling.

This particular example comes finished with Magnetite Blue Metallic paintwork (Code 931 H), a delightful shade of blue that truly pops in the sunshine. Despite the car’s age, the paintwork remains in rather impressive condition, offering an excellent shine with seemingly only a handful of blemishes and ageing to show.

The vehicle sits upon a rather rare set of 14” Bundt-style alloy wheels, all of which offer a respectable finish, with centre caps to suit. These desirable wheels are wrapped in appropriate Michelin tyres, with plenty of tread left to enjoy.

All brightwork also offers a great finish for its age, with the likes of the front grille, wipers, glass surrounds and details showing a tidy, reflective surface. Badging, lights and additional details follow suit, contributing to a very well-rounded exterior finish.

Although slight signs of ageing are present, this 450 SEL’s exterior reflects plenty of care. With the exception of paint & body work undertaken to the sills and wings, the vehicle is also believed to retain its original finish and does so brilliantly. This is a vehicle that is equally usable as it is handsome, one that enthusiasts would certainly be proud to be seen with.

Interior

It should come as no surprise that the cabin of this 450 SEL is absolutely magnificent. It’s supremely comfortable, spacious for both front and rear passengers, and is packed with quality materials, standing as a great showcase of both functional modernism and old-world luxury.

Although not the original material the leather seats remain comfortable and well-finished, showing only the slightest signs of their age since their installation in the 90's. Carpeting throughout the cabin follows suit, offering a rather clean, tidy finish much like the bright and airy headlining. Doorcards, pillar trims and the dashboard also show minimal signs of use, and all switchgear is believed to be in full working order.

With the exception of the odd sign of use and a few blemishes upon the dashboard veneer details, the interior has been brilliantly preserved. With a dash of TLC, it would only be further elevated and may be one of the finer surviving interiors in this colour.

Mechanical

Although the handsome styling does nothing to suggest the heart of a muscle car, this 450 SEL 6.9 is an absolute powerhouse within its own right. The beastly V8 lurking under the bonnet puts down plenty of power, offering a grin-inducing grunt and ensuring this classic Mercedes holds up to modern traffic very well.

The vehicle appears to have been well maintained throughout its life, with the included history folder detailing plenty of servicing and repairs. Key invoices note the likes of fluids, brakes, filters, spark plugs, belts, a new battery, a window regulator, various electrical components, tyres and more.

Although a spot of detailing wouldn’t be amiss under the bonnet, the engine bay remains in order, and the underside shows signs of previous undersealing work. With such a low mileage figure and legendary Mercedes-Benz build quality at its core, it may come as no surprise that the vehicle is said to run and drive as it should for its age, and is ready to be enjoyed.

History

This SEL is accompanied by a folder of history, including a range of previous MoT certificates dating back to 1987, previous tax discs and a selection of invoices covering the aforementioned maintenance.

The original handbook and wallet are also present, with a great array of servicing stamps to observe within the booklet. A handful of old photographs are included, along with 2 keys and the current V5C document, which notes just 5 former keepers.

Summary

The W116 remains highly sought after, not just being the highly collectable first entry of an impressive S-Class model range, but also for being a truly brilliant platform to own and drive. The 450 SEL 6.9 takes this platform to another realm, offering the top-of-the-line specification available and brilliant collection potential.

This very example has stood the test of time brilliantly, and now presents a great chance to get your teeth stuck into one of the most impressive classic Mercedes-Benz models available in today's market.
