Background
Long known for innovative technology, lavish comforts, and legendary German build quality, Mercedes-Benz has an impressive legacy under its belt. Among its four-wheeled creations sit the legendary S-Class, a top-of-the-line series of full-sized luxury sedans and coupés spanning an impressive production run, officially beginning with the W116 in 1972.
The W116 was a dramatic leap forward in terms of styling for the marque, contributing to a handsome executive-esque design that bore sporty tones, even taking inspiration from the R107 SL-Class roadster. Alongside its admirable design, the W116 also made waves with innovative tech, being the first Mercedes-Benz to feature a hydropneumatic suspension system. It also introduced four-wheel anti-lock brakes, as well as a strengthened structure and additional changes to further protect passengers in the event of a collision.
With an array of drivetrain configurations and models on offer, the W116 proved to be a tremendous success, later paving the way for future S Class variants as we know them. Over 470 thousand units were produced throughout the W116’s production run, and the platform remains incredibly desirable today. Out of those models available, enthusiasts and collectors do, of course, hunt for the 450 SEL 6.9, being the Crème de la crème of W116 models.
