Background

The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is a grand touring sports car that has been manufactured since 1954. SL is German, and stands for ‘Sport-Leicht’ which shockingly translates to ‘Sport Light’ in English. SL cars produced between 1971 and 1989 are collectively referred to as the R107 generation. The R107 was the first generation of SLs to receive a V8, introduced new design language for Mercedes, and also came equipped with a host of safety features that eventually spread to more Mercedes models shortly after being introduced.

Overview

With a production run that lasted from 1971 to 1989, the R107 generation of SLs was one of the longest produced vehicles in Mercedes’ history. The formula didn’t change much from its 1971 introduction, so the 1972 model didn’t get any ground-breaking equipment or features. Nevertheless, this 350 SL houses within it a 3.5L V8 mated to an automatic transmission.

Exterior

Condition around the exterior of this 350 SL is strong, it’s obvious that the car has been well preserved. An immediate walk around of the vehicle shows no damage to the exterior whatsoever. There is a tiny chip on the passenger side of the hood, and several microscopic chips on the opposite side. Pinstriping, which is not present in all the photos, was hand done by a professional within the last month. Chrome around the car is straight and free of wrinkles, aside from the piece over the license plate, which is original and at owner discretion, may need to be rechromed within the next few years. The hardtop has been well stored and not only has no marks on the outside, but also has a clean headliner and will be affixed to the car prior to pickup.. The new OEM brown canvas convertible top comes out easily, folds neatly back into place, and has no issues at all. All glass is clear and has no chips or cracks. Of the four hubcaps, only the front passenger’s shows minor curb rash, but the rest are clear. The seller states that the tires are new, having purchased them 6 months ago, and reporting that they have less than 50 miles on them. Overall, this 350 SL has been exceptionally well taken care of. The exterior and most of the details are lovely, yes, there are some aforementioned areas that could use attention, but will it break the bank to fix all of them? Absolutely not.

Interior

Much like the exterior, it only takes a moment to see how well this interior has been maintained. The two-tone brown leather seats look fantastic, and although they look a little loose at the edges, they show very little signs of creasing if at all. The black leather steering wheel and dark brown dash pad follow suit and show no cracks or obvious signs of deterioration. The center console is impressively clean and again speaks to how well this Mercedes has been kept. From the air vents and clock all the way down to the shifter, all of the buttons and knobs look just as they did when they rolled off the assembly line. Aside from the Sanyo stereo, which was no doubt added afterwards for a touch of modern convenience. The door panels are clean, and all of their material fits tightly in place including the rare crank windows. The carpets in each footwell and behind the seats fit excellently into their respective positions. The trunk is clean, but the rubber mats within are starting to crack. Overall, the damage inside is minimal just like the damage outside.

Mechanical

The engine bay’s condition mirrors the status of the rest of the car. It is wonderfully tidy. There is no history of accident damage and no rust, and everything appears to be in its proper place. Underneath the vehicle, the first and most obvious thing to point out is that there is no major damage or corrosion to be seen. The frame and floorboards are solid original, the suspension components all look in order, and the exhaust shows minimal discoloration.

History

The Seller bought this 350 SL with a close friend in 2020. Since purchasing the vehicle, the following items have been replaced or upgraded: air temperature sensor, water temperature sensor, fuel injectors, fuel injection trigger points, timing belt, tune up, all fluids, and the cold-start valve and MAP sensor were both replaced with NOS tested units. The gas tank was also flushed, and the seller inspected the brake system and described all components as being at or above 80%.

Summary

Alongside the likes of the 911 and the M3, the Mercedes-Benz SL is one of the longest-running continuously-updated sports cars of all time. Generation after generation, Mercedes strived to make the SL the best driving car it could possibly be. Today’s example has been impeccably maintained both inside and out. The exterior is clean even though it would lose a few points in a competition, and the interior is in wonderful original shape. We are thrilled to offer this 350 SL with No Reserve and an estimate between $24,000 and $30,000.
