Mercedes-Benz introduced a long wheelbase version of the W123 in 1978. Overview

Mercedes-Benz kept the W123 in production for nine years before it was replaced by the more modern-looking 124-Series model. Nearly four decades after its discontinuation, the 123 still holds great value. Despite it being a fairly common car once, it's far from ordinary. Everyone seems to love them, from classic car collectors to even connoisseurs of slightly lesser-known cars. With decent global support when it comes to parts and specialists, owning one now isn't daunting, even as someone's first classic Mercedes-Benz. It is genuinely that good, this car.

Exterior

We absolutely adore this Pullman Limousine. Finished in a flat, glossy orange, this 300D shows no major damage on its exterior, and minor damage is hard to come by as well. The paint appears to have been applied evenly and there are very little blemishes to speak of. Chrome around the car is clean and free of surface corrosion and wrinkling. Glass is also in good condition, with all of the many, many pieces showing no cracks or chips. Painted hubcaps are clean with no curb rash showing except for one that does have some scratching, and although tire tread looks decent, we always recommend a new set. We’d also like to note that all of the door handles work as intended, and every door shuts as smoothly as they did when they rolled off the assembly line back in the ‘70s. Overall, the exterior to this 300D Pullman Limousine is in fantastic condition.

Interior

Much like the outside, this 300D’s interior is in wonderful shape. Up top, acres of white leather are strapped tightly to the ceiling and show no stains or tears. The front seats, folding seats, and bench seats are all tidy save for a small stain here and there, and there are zero holes or tears in the material. Each door panel sports a stain or two, but for the most part they have been well preserved. The black dash pad shows no cracks, the leather dashboard looks healthy, and all of the gauges mounted within the dash are clean and easily readable. The black leather-wrapped steering wheel seems to have faded slightly over the years, but this is the only part of the entire interior that seems to be showing its true age. Even then the wheel still looks much healthier than others that are equally old. The center console and the many switches and knobs attached to it are clean and unharmed. Carpets inside the vehicle do feature several stains throughout the cabin, but the carpets don’t look to be damaged in any other way. Overall, this interior is in exceptional condition, and a strong detailing would certainly have this car ready for competition.

Mechanical

Under the hood, the 5-cylinder diesel motor located smack in the center of the engine bay looks clean. All the major components aside from a battery are present and accounted for, and nothing appears to be majorly damaged. Under the body, the frame appears to have a small layer of surface corrosion, the floorboards look to be in good shape, the suspension components are all in order, and the exhaust shows discoloration commensurate with the age of the vehicle.

History

We do not have many records to tell us about this Merc’s travels. What we do know for certain is that the seller took ownership of the car in June 2012.

Summary

The Mercedes-Benz 300D was a wildly popular car. Total units built extends well into the seven-figure range, but that makes sense given the wide variety of engine and body options Mercedes made available to the public. Incredible build quality and the legendary OM617 diesel engine gave the car a reputation for being bulletproof. Today’s example is a rare limousine variant, and it sports the OM617 motor as well. This 300D Pullman is in incredibly nice condition, and for all the reasons listed we believe the value for this car lies somewhere between $8,000 and $14,000.
