Background
In 1976, Mercedes-Benz introduced the W123 executive saloon to replace the most successful selling Mercedes to date which was the W115. With a more contemporary look over the W115, the W123 had a longer wheelbase, round headlights and a less angular look on the styling side of things. Later in the European production the headlights were changed to the rectangular headlights, where North America retained the round headlights.
Powering the W123 was the 3.0 litre 5-cylinder engine from the successful W115, with the 240D model being renamed to the 300D to match the North American markets The reliability of the engine and the over engineering of the W123 made the car a popular choice for the German taxi businesses, who would easily smash the 300,000 to 600,000 mile mark with just basic servicing costs.
In 1978, Mercedes introduced the W123 T, which was built at the Frankfurt factory and was the first ever estate version built by Mercedes. It was added to the range of W123 models and was called the 300TD, the 300 is the 3.0 litre engine, T stands for Transport and Touring followed by the letter D for diesel.
The 300TD was a luxurious car capable of seating up to seven people (with the optional third row rear facing foldable seats). In 1980 to 1982 it was packed with safety features and creature comforts such as Anti Lock Brakes (ABS), cruise control, power steering and central locking. All these things you may think of as standard nowadays but remember this was the 80’s and this is what put Mercedes-Benz up there at the top of the tree for elegance and luxury.
