Background

In 1976, Mercedes-Benz introduced the W123 executive saloon to replace the most successful selling Mercedes to date which was the W115. With a more contemporary look over the W115, the W123 had a longer wheelbase, round headlights and a less angular look on the styling side of things. Later in the European production the headlights were changed to the rectangular headlights, where North America retained the round headlights.

Powering the W123 was the 3.0 litre 5-cylinder engine from the successful W115, with the 240D model being renamed to the 300D to match the North American markets The reliability of the engine and the over engineering of the W123 made the car a popular choice for the German taxi businesses, who would easily smash the 300,000 to 600,000 mile mark with just basic servicing costs.

In 1978, Mercedes introduced the W123 T, which was built at the Frankfurt factory and was the first ever estate version built by Mercedes. It was added to the range of W123 models and was called the 300TD, the 300 is the 3.0 litre engine, T stands for Transport and Touring followed by the letter D for diesel.

The 300TD was a luxurious car capable of seating up to seven people (with the optional third row rear facing foldable seats). In 1980 to 1982 it was packed with safety features and creature comforts such as Anti Lock Brakes (ABS), cruise control, power steering and central locking. All these things you may think of as standard nowadays but remember this was the 80’s and this is what put Mercedes-Benz up there at the top of the tree for elegance and luxury.

Overview

The seller of this lovely 1984 Mercedes-Benz 300 TD has owned the car for approximately 3 years where prior to that it has had 3 previous keepers. Looking back through the MOT history, the 300TD has only covered around 7,000 miles since 2006, so definitely not getting the use it deserves. Unfortunately, due to relocation and the lack of storage, the seller has to part with the Mercedes purley because he doesn't want to store the car out in the elements.

Everything comes with the Mercedes in terms of paperwork which you will enjoy sifting through to give you a full picture of this well cared for Benz. It has receipts dating back to when it was new for servicing and parts, right up until present day. The most recent items that have been replaced are the battery, shock absorbers and a new set of tyres.

Exterior

Finished in the fantastic Thistle Green metallic, the 300TD is in lovely condition. The seller believes the car to never have received any paint apart from to the tailgate where someone tried to steal the Mercedes badge during the 90’s trend of car badge theft. There is the odd mark and dink on the sides of the car but this is just as you would expect from a car of this age and originality.

Starting at the front, the lower valence does have a couple of age related marks and the odd small dent but nothing out of the ordinary. Moving up, the chrome bumper has a nice bright finish with no scuffs. The grille is again like the bumper, bright with no damage to it and sitting pride of place is the three pointed star. Either side, the headlights are both bright and free from any chips and the same can be said for the indicators. The bonnet aligns nice and straight with the wings and lights.

Around to the sides of the Mercedes and on the swage line running front to back is the chrome trim which is free from any dents and still sits nice and straight. The side profile from either side you can see the door gaps are nice and symmetrical. The trim around the windows is again bright and clean along with the door mirrors, door handles and the useful roof bars. Ten windows make up the glass on the 300TD, all of which are in good condition with no noticeable scratches to point out.

To the rear is nice and clean with the boot trim aligning as it should and the side trim and the tailgate aligning equal on each side. The 300TD and the DIESEL badges are bright and clean as is the bumper, which is also free from any scuffs. The taillights with the classic Mercedes design to prevent dirt build up are free from any splits or cracks. Onto the wheels, and these are in good condition with just some age related marks and some marks where previous weights were fitted. The tyres have all recently been replaced and so will give you plenty of miles.

Interior

The Mercedes is very well presented inside which is nice and original. Trimmed in Olive material, a black dashboard and Zebrano wood trim, the 300 is definitely 80’s. As you open the door, the door cards have matching material to the seats in the centre with a green vinyl outer which are in a nice tidy condition with no damage.

The driver’s seat is just worn in nicely and it does have some slight wear to the base of the seat. Moving across to the passenger side and that seat is in good condition with no real wear to the base. The steering wheel is in good condition and just behind are the instruments which are all working with no warning lights displayed. The Mercedes has a odometer reading of 135,564. Just below the ignition switch is the immobiliser which works as it should.

Further across is the Zebrano wood trim, which does have some wear around the switches to the top part of the center console. Further down are the heater controls, which have no wear to the writing, and just below that the stereo has been replaced for a Bluetooth Blaupunkt CD head unit, which for a modern unit, does fit in with the car quite well. All the electric windows are working along with the door mirrors and sunroof.

The carpets to the front and rear are in exceptional condition and having rubber Mercedes mats to the front has definitely helped. The rear bench seat is in excellent condition, and looks to have hardly ever been sat in. The same for the door cards and headlining, these are all in excellent condition. The rear of the front seats have some net storage area usually holding a map of some description (certainly in the 80’s)

The luggage area is again in excellent condition with no wear to the boot carpet. There is the dog guard that pulls up to keep those muddy paws in the boot. To the left is the spare wheel and over to the right the jack, wheel brace and warning triangle are present. There is a rubber load liner to protect the carpet.

Mechanical

The underside of the Mercades does have some signs of surface rust on the suspension components and parts of the floor, but nothing that would cause an issue. It would benefit from a rust treatment coating to stop anything getting any worse. The Mercedes is also free from any oil leaks that we could see. The engine bay is nice and clean with some signs of corrosion on the aluminum parts, but it does look original.

The Mercedes 300TD is fitted with a 5-cylinder 3.0 litre diesel engine known as the OM617, which has been used by Mercedes-Benz throughout the 70’s and 80’s and is widely regarded as being one of the most reliable engines ever produced. With engines reaching over 612,000 miles before needing a rebuild, you’ll be pleased to know by that standard this one is just nicely run in with only 135,564 on the clock.

Flick the key and the Merc fires into life. It ticks over nice and smooth, with no noises, rattles or knocks coming from the engine. The transmission is a 5-speed manual gearbox, which glides through the gears just as it should. The suspension holds the car nice and firm thanks to the new shock absorbers to give a comfortable ride. There are no untoward noises coming from either the suspension or the transmission.

History

Packed full of paperwork, this 300TD has it all! Receipts dating back to when the car was new, it looks as if everything is there which the seller confirms as there are two folders full of paperwork for the car. The Mercedes comes with the original owners manual, there are two keys but only one immobiliser fob.

The car has an MOT which is valid until the 7th October 2021. There was an advisory on the car about some corrosion. The seller did mention that his Classic Mercedes specialist who works on the car has said this is only very minor. Going from that, this shouldn't take much to address for the right person.

Summary

Used by a number of celebrities in the 1980’s, the 300TD was certainly a lot more than just a taxi in the UK, it gave a sense of luxury, elegance and was definitely the car to be in. Slightly more expensive than a Ford Granada Ghia at the time, both equally nice cars in their own rights, but which would you rather have sitting on the drive?

An absolute gem of a car which still has luxury, elegance and can be used on a daily basis with ease. School run, shopping, days out and with plenty of room for the family, including the dog, it's ready to jump in, go and enjoy!

We estimate the 300TD will bring in the region of £11,500 - £17,000
