Background
With the introduction of the Mercedes-AMG SLS in 2010, the exalted Affalterbach-based tweakers and fettlers of AMG took a few significant technological steps forward while, at the same time, giving a respectful nod to the legendary 300 SL 'gullwing' coupé of the 1950s.
While undoubtedly fast, furious and fabulously expensive, the Mercedes-AMG SLS somewhat divided opinion between those who thought it rather too single-minded, too impractical and too brash, and those who simply couldn’t get enough of its single-mindedness, impracticality and brashness.
In 2015 its replacement by the Mercedes-AMG GT took much of the sting out of the argument.
The GT’s 4-litre biturbo engine was as powerful as the 6.2-litre fire-breathing, gas-guzzling monster housed under the bonnet of its predecessor and could match it for top speed and acceleration while offering far more in the way of flexibility, fuel ‘economy’ and, vitally, the ability to be both a track star and a long-legged intercontinental cruiser…according to mood, opportunity and taste.
Many iterations of the GT followed, including a Roadster and various power-hike options that took it up to way past 700bhp.
One of the more exclusive variants – we believe as few as 15 may have been exported the UK – was the AMG GT Night Edition, of which we have a very fine Roadster example for your delectation right here.
