“ Limited edition, possibly only 15 built for UK ”

With only 15 of these Night Editions imported to the UK - and for the Roadster that figure is likely to be even lower - you’ll be a long time waiting to find yourself parked next to another one at Waitrose.

Background

With the introduction of the Mercedes-AMG SLS in 2010, the exalted Affalterbach-based tweakers and fettlers of AMG took a few significant technological steps forward while, at the same time, giving a respectful nod to the legendary 300 SL 'gullwing' coupé of the 1950s.

While undoubtedly fast, furious and fabulously expensive, the Mercedes-AMG SLS somewhat divided opinion between those who thought it rather too single-minded, too impractical and too brash, and those who simply couldn’t get enough of its single-mindedness, impracticality and brashness.

In 2015 its replacement by the Mercedes-AMG GT took much of the sting out of the argument.

The GT’s 4-litre biturbo engine was as powerful as the 6.2-litre fire-breathing, gas-guzzling monster housed under the bonnet of its predecessor and could match it for top speed and acceleration while offering far more in the way of flexibility, fuel ‘economy’ and, vitally, the ability to be both a track star and a long-legged intercontinental cruiser…according to mood, opportunity and taste.

Many iterations of the GT followed, including a Roadster and various power-hike options that took it up to way past 700bhp.

One of the more exclusive variants – we believe as few as 15 may have been exported the UK – was the AMG GT Night Edition, of which we have a very fine Roadster example for your delectation right here.

Overview

Having been first registered on 12.3.22 and completed just 800 miles in its life, this exceptional car is, to all intents and purposes, brand-new.

Known as the ‘Stealth’ model in the US, the Night Edition came with practically every box ticked on AMG’s exhaustively long spec list.

As the name suggests, it also came with pretty much everything in shades of black specially selected to be even blacker than the inside of a witch’s coal shed during a solar eclipse.

And, as you know, that’s really very black indeed.

It’s even got black brake callipers.

The vendor bought the car from new and is only selling because various lifestyle changes mean that he’ll be spending more time at his house overseas and less time experiencing the thrills and spills of this pedigree AMG autobahn-stormer.

Since he decided to sell a few months ago, the car has been kept warm and dry inside a specially-built ‘car cave’ (the vendor owns a construction business, so it’s a good one) and he’s taken every effort to add as few miles as possible to the odometer.

Consequently, what you’re looking at is a car that’s effectively showroom-fresh and blissfully unfamiliar with anything as vulgar as road grime, weather…or use.

Exterior

The bodywork is pristine and there are no dents, creases or dinks of any significance to report anywhere that we can see.

The shut-lines and panel gaps are as Teutonically crisp and consistent as you would hope and wish to find.

The black paintwork gleams with a real depth of shine and lustre and we defy even the most obsessive scrutineer to find any stone chips or micro-scratches that have inadvertently strayed beyond the confines of microscopy.

As you would expect of a car that has led an extraordinarily pampered life and barely been outside, the lights, lenses, badging and trim are all immaculate and beyond reproach.

The wheels, too, are in fine condition and seem to be unacquainted with any kerbs or other hazards.

Unsurprisingly, the Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres look to have plenty of life left in them.

The black fabric hood, which is equally untroubled by either time or use, fits, stows and goes up and down as promised.

In short, this is effectively a brand-new car that happens to be a year old and has 800 miles on the clock.

Interior

The good news continues unabated on the inside.

The whole interior oozes class, sophistication and purpose.

And it is, of course, ever so black – although there are plenty of textures and finishes to keep you entertained, ranging from matte to gloss and metal to leather.

The haptic feedback on everything you touch conveys unmistakable quality and uncompromising attention to detail.

The diamond-quilted and ventilated leather seats have yet to earn a crease let alone any hint of patina.

The roof lining is excellent.

The door cards, carpets and mats are as good as new.

The steering wheel (which has its own protective cover for when it’s not in use), gear selector, dashboard, dials and controls are all in fine fettle.

The vendor tells us that every button he’s pressed, every toggle he’s flicked and every menu he’s scrolled through has done what it was meant to do.

That said, he was the first to admit that he’s barely scratched the surface in terms of the car’s electronic systems, functions and capabilities.

As you would expect, the boot is every bit as good as the rest of it.

Mechanical

The engine bay looks clean, dry and as you would hope to find in a car that’s yet to reach 1000 miles. Everything appears to be in its right and proper place.

The undersides of the car seem to have plenty of structural integrity and look as if they’ve spent most of their time indoors in the warm and dry (they have).

History

This car isn’t old enough to have any history.

It was given its ‘A’ service on 10.7.23 by Mercedes-Benz of Oxford.

It comes with all handbooks, manuals, keys and a clear HPI check.

The registration number shown in the photographs, however, is staying with the vendor.

Summary

With only 15 of these Night Editions imported to the UK - and for the Roadster that figure is likely to be even lower - you’ll be a long time waiting to find yourself parked next to another one at Waitrose.

This is an enormously capable, potent, typically over-engineered piece of AMG-Mercedes automotive brilliance.

It’s also fabulously handsome and has a presence like little else on the road.

We think this particular car is almost certainly the best way to get your hands on a squeaky clean, virtually showroom-fresh example without paying the full price of a brand-new one.

We estimate this car will reach anywhere between £130,000 - £140,000.
