Background

The Mazda MX-5 has become the quintessential two-seater sportscar of recent times. The Mk1 started the mould and is now well on its way to the sporting Hall of Fame. When Mazda came to replace it with the Mk2, they did not stray far in the concept. The main change was the removal of the pop-up headlights in order to pass pedestrian safety legislation, but much of the car remained very similar to maintain the same feel. In fact, so similar that this writer was recently surprised to find that a Mk1 and Mk2 softtop are interchangeable!

Overview

This particular Mazda MX-5 Mk 2 is being offered by us as the current owner has just bought the green Mk1 we auctioned very recently. It is offered with absolutely no reserve. The current owner bought this Mazda last year with a full MOT as a bit of a fun for the summer. He took it to France, and used it to commute regularly before transferring to something more sensible for the winter. It has just had another new MOT and will provide someone with the same experience he has just had. There have been only 4 previous owners.

Drop the roof, pull out the suntan lotion, and smile.

Exterior

The silver paintwork is generally in good condition, although there are a few areas of lacquer peel, a couple of rust blisters and the rear bumper appears to be sagging on one side. None of it is unexpected for a car of this age and mileage, and remember it is all selling for no reserve. All flaws are photographed in the Gallery.

The front wheels have been reconditioned, and the hood outer cover does appear to be in very good condition. It is surprising that there is no invoice for a new hood as it does appear to be too good to be the original.

The Achilles' Heel of the MX-5 has always been rust in the sills, and this one is no exception. The MOT inspector's screwdriver has just been prodded at the car and it has come away with an advisory on sill corrosion. On inspection, we would predict that come next year, some remedial welding will probably be required to pass again. The rest of the underneath appears sound and worthy of many more years yet.

Interior

The summary on the interior is it's very good, clean and original. All the fixtures and fittings are present and correct and seem to work. A nice point for those that appreciate these things is that the radio/CD is the original unit. A tonneau is also included. The only obvious sign of wear is a little tear in the corner of the driver's seat base (photographed in the Gallery).

Mechanical

All seems present and correct here, the current owner drove the car an hour to us and it states that it all works. There is a very good service history for this MX-5, and most importantly a cambelt, water pump, thermostat and rocker cover gasket change was completed last July at Mazda specialist MX-5 Works. As stated before, there is a new MOT for the summer.

History

This is very impressive, we have a service book with 11 service stamps in it, plus the above cambelt change, plus it looks like most or all of the past MOT's are with the car along with some other invoices. We wish some of other cars as well documented as this!

Please check through the 80+ photos of the Mazda that are in the Gallery alongside the documents. We don't think you'll find a more comprehensive listing for a Mk2 MX-5 on the web!

Summary

Quite simple here this time. No talk of investment. No mention of treasuring a delicate item. No need to raid the trust fund.

It has two seats and no roof. It has a full MOT. It's ready to go. There is no reserve. Summer is just around the corner (Spring's here right now, apparently!). What price some smiles?

Pitch in a bid, you could be driving it away in a week's time!
