Background

Though already successfully engaged in the business of designing, engineering, and manufacturing engines for aircraft–both of the fixed-wing and 800-foot zeppelin types–Maybach decided to field its first car just over 100 years ago.

Maybach cars, like their engines, were advanced, overbuilt, and very expensive, though production largely ceased with the end of WW2. More than 50 years would pass before the storied brand returned in 2002, ready to bring battle to Rolls-Royce and Bentley with a twin-turbo V12, advanced electronics, and all the technological might expected of an ultra-high-end 21st century saloon.

Overview

The auction car is a 57S Zeppelin, the numbers of its name signifying its length measured in decimeters, the ‘S’ suffix standing for ‘special’ and identifying a larger, more powerful twin-turbo V12 engine, and ‘Zeppelin’ referring to a range-topping trim package.

The Maybach 62 and 62S, the brand’s other offerings at the time, were essentially longer wheelbase models of the 57 and 57S, and all were heavily based on the legendary W140 Mercedes-Benz S-class.

Only 100 57S Zeppelins were made, and this example shows under 600 miles on the odometer. It sold for approximately $524,000 when new, or close to $700k in 2022 money.

Exterior

The car’s prominent side stripes are unique to Zeppelin spec, and gold trim seen on the badging and distinct double-M hood ornament seems to have been custom specced from new.

At just under 19’ long, this is a very large car, stretching nearly 20” longer than a contemporary, standard wheelbase S-class. Amazingly, the 62 added another foot and a half between its bumpers.

Condition appears to be preserved very well.

Interior

The car’s cabin is brimming with the latest luxury and tech features of the era, and in accordance with its limited use, it presents just as well as the exterior. Seats are heated, air-conditioned, massaging, and electrically adjustable in all directions, front and rear.

A perfume atomizer, drinks cooler, dual-screen DVD system, electric sunshades, rear ventilation controls, and even a roof-mounted, analog speedometer help keep rear seat passengers suitably comfortable, refreshed, and informed. Legroom is very generous, as are all other dimensions.

Mechanical

Up half a liter and nearly 100 hp from the standard unit fitted to non-S, non-Zeppelin spec 57 and 62 models, the 6.0 liter, 631 hp biturbo V12 of the auction car could accelerate all three tons of it to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds when new. Top speed is governed to 173 mph.

History

The auction car is sold with limited documentation.

Summary

Fast, exotic, rare, and very special, this land-bound Zeppelin represents the most exclusive of modern German luxury.

Estimated $150,000 - $200,000
