Background

The Maybach 57 and Maybach 62 were the first automobiles to be offered by Maybach after the brand was revived by then DaimlerChrysler AG, now Daimler AG. Both models were inspired by the Benz Maybach concept car unveiled at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show. The concept car was built on the Mercedes-Benz W140 S-Class platform and so were the 57 and 62. The 2008 Luxury Brand Status Index placed Maybach in first place over both Rolls-Royce and Bentley. Unfortunately, not everything turned out for Maybach in the following years. The 57 and 62 were both discontinued in 2012 due to continued financial losses for the brand, and one fifth of the sales that Rolls-Royce models were generating.

Overview

The Maybach 57 came with an astounding number of luxury features for its time. Standard features include: navigation with voice recognition, a powered rear sunshade, rear DVD entertainment system, interior air filter, front and rear massage seats, 21-speaker Bose premium sound system, telescopic heated leather-wrapped wood steering wheel with radio and climate controls, power trunk open/close, voice activated radio, keyless start, heated front and rear seats, cooled front seats, adaptive cruise control, 18-way front seats, 14-way rear seats, heated cupholders, rear refrigerator, rear pop-out folding table trays, backup camera, pneumatic soft close doors, iPod adapter, wireless cell phone link, four-zone climate control, and AirMatic Dual control, a Mercedes-Benz air suspension system.

Exterior

The exterior to this Maybach 57 is a wonderful metallic burgundy. For the most part, the exterior is in excellent condition. There are only a few minor imperfections around the outside and they are as follows: a hairline scratch in the driver’s door, some rub marks on the driver’s side rear door, a small scratch on the driver’s rear fender, and a final small scratch on the passenger-side side skirt. While the car has its imperfections outside, all of them are minor at best. The Maybach wheels are in good condition, but the driver’s front wheel does have a minor amount of curb rash. The tires are in good condition and have a healthy amount of tread left to go. The solar panel on the roof is unbothered, but the seal around it looks somewhat weathered and might need addressing in a few years’ time.

Interior

The interior to this 57 was done with cream leather and is complemented by an abundance of wooden inlays. Quality overall inside is great. The leather seats have no holes or tears and only the driver’s seat and center armrest could use some cleaning. The footwell for each occupant is spotless and all the carpets are in excellent shape. The dual leather/wood steering wheel is spotless and all the gauges behind it are clean and easily readable. Speaking of wood, the inlays around the interior not only look amazing, but they also appear to have been unbothered over time. There is a scuff mark in the leather of the driver’s side rear door, but it will likely be easy to fix. The rear bench looks fantastic, and all of the curtains for the rear compartment are in proper order.

Mechanical

We are happy to report that this Maybach 57 is not hiding any major damage underneath. The frame is extremely neat, and all the suspension components are in proper order. The exhaust shows no signs of discoloration whatsoever. Under the hood, the trend continues. The engine bay is extremely tidy and nothing appears to be damaged or out of place.

History

In 2008, the car was purchased brand-new and registered as a company vehicle in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It stayed in Florida for a year and a half, and in that time the vehicle was only driven 782 miles. The second owner purchased the vehicle in September of 2009, and brought the car up to New York, New York. The Maybach stayed in New York until 2013 and had roughly 9,203 miles on it before being sold to the seller.

Summary

The Maybach 57 is a wonderful luxury sedan from the 2000s. A thoughtful, and stunning interior combines with a subtle exterior to make a wonderful high-end vehicle that flies completely under the radar. This specific 57 has some minor imperfections both inside and outside, but they are miniscule at best. The car comes absolutely loaded with features, and the trunk-mounted PlayStation 2 is a collector’s item in its own right that has the potential to add to the car’s value in 20 years’ time.

The Market by Bonhams is excited to offer this 2008 Maybach 57 for online auction with no reserve and an estimate between $30,000 and $50,000.
