Background

'With its elegantly shaped Frua body, the Maserati Kyalami catches the eye without being in any way flashy. The price tag means that it will appeal chiefly to the customer who wants and can afford something different. ...it performs most satisfyingly, is truly practical, and handles like a genuine thoroughbred.' – Autocar.

Parent company Citroën's financial crisis led to Maserati changing hands in 1975, its saviour being Argentine-born carmaker Alessandro De Tomaso.

One of the revitalised company's first products was the Kyalami sports saloon, effectively a revised De Tomaso Longchamp fitted with either a 4.1 (‘4200’) or 4.9-litre Maserati V8 engine in place of the original Ford unit.

The Longchamp had its origins in the Ghia-styled Deauville saloon of 1970, and used a shortened version of the latter's floor pan and similar, all-independently-suspended running gear.

Subtly restyled by Frua and named after South Africa's Kyalami circuit - scene of Pedro Rodriguez's 1967 Formula 1 Grand Prix victory at the wheel of a Cooper-Maserati - the Kyalami made its debut at the 1976 Turin Motor Show.

Only 124 Maserati Kyalami 4200s were ever built.

In common with many vehicles from the vendor’s collection, the car comes with no history or service records.

With the proviso that we haven’t tried to start or drive this vehicle and can therefore only comment on its cosmetic appearance, we think it is in reasonable overall condition although there are some issues with bubbling on the exterior and there’s a little work to be done on the interior.

This 1978 LHD manual Maserati Kyalami 4200 entered the vendor’s collection of static display cars in 2012.

Exterior

Overall, the silver paint is OK and is doing a good job of showing off the car’s classy and stylish lines.

The bodywork has no dents, dinks or creases of any significance.

The panel gaps and shut lines are as tight and consistent as you could hope for on a 1970’s Italian car.

The steel, though, is also Italian and from the 1970s and, consequently, there are some issues with corrosion here and there.

There is some bubbling at the base of the passenger side front wing and into the sill.

There is rust in evidence along the front edge of the bonnet and below the front bumper.

Stone chips on the front wing on the driver’s side draw the attention to some rippling paint and a fairly obvious respray.

There is some cracked paint around the driver’s door handle and bubbling at the base of the rear screen. The rear bumper is loose.

The car’s wheels and chrome work are in decent order.

Some of the exterior rubber trim has seen better days.

Interior

The interior, while rather dusty and in need of a thorough clean, is actually quite good.

The black leather upholstery needs washing and feeding but has nothing much more than an attractive (in our opinion) patina of creasing to show for its 44 years of life.

The seats are supportive, comfortable and functional all round.

The door cards are reasonable, as are the headlining, carpets and mats.

The padded dashboard surround is very faded and is showing its age.

There are holes in the rear armrests and the foam inside them looks to have been the diet of choice for some voracious moths and their offspring.

We can’t make any claims about the full functionality of switches, knobs, levers, toggles, buttons, dials or other electrics as we haven’t tried to start or drive the car.

Mechanical

Everything in the engine bay is rather dusty but clean and dry.

The undersides of the car appear to have a decent amount of structural integrity as far as we can see.

History

This car doesn’t come with any history or service records.

It must be registered in the country of your choice and you will need to contact the appropriate vehicle licensing agency for instructions on how to do this.

Any paperwork shown in the gallery is a facsimile and in no way constitutes any kind of licensing or registration certification.

The documents in the photo gallery are photocopies.

Summary

This very rare, low kilometres Maserati Kyalami 4200 needs a little cosmetic attention inside and out but, as far as we can tell, it’s only a few days’ work away from being returned to its no doubt impressive - and very stylish - former glory.

Provided, of course, that the engine and mechanicals are amenable to recommissioning.

We’re confident to offer this car for auction with an estimate of €30,000 - €40,000.
