Background

Maserati, despite decades of high-level motorsports success, including GP championships, four back-to-back Targa Florio wins, countless pro and club-level sports car victories, and even consecutive Indy 500 wins, has long been a manufacturer better known for beautiful and exotic gran turismos, rather than out-and-out sports cars.

This storied bloodline began with the stunning straight-six A6 series of 1947-1956, evolving through the elegant Carrozzeria Touring styled 3500GT of 1957-1964, the regal and exquisite 5000GT of 1959-1966, the lovely Frua penned Mistral of 1963-1970, and the iconic, sharklike, Giugiaro designed Ghibli of 1967-1973, to name only a select few.

Overview

Gandini’s razor-sharp, Kamm tail Khamsin was next on the wind, adopting the same race-bred V8 utilized by its immediate predecessor (among others), and situating it so far rearward that the front-mid engined coupe offered perfect 50/50 weight distribution.

A mere 435 were hand made over a near-decade long run, and just 155 were US spec cars, including the auction example.

Exterior

Gandini did a knockout job with the Khamsin, with design highlights including a rising, wedge-like profile, steeply inward tapering glasshouse, and unique asymmetric hood vents.

This 1975 example is fitted with standard US impact bumpers, as well as US spec tail lights which are mounted inside the car’s bodywork, directly below the distinct full-width glass tail panel in which they “float” on ROW models. Said bumpers appear to have been painted to match the car’s bodywork, as these are normally black.

Wheels are correct Campagnolo made OEM items.

Interior

Ostensibly a 2+2, in reality the Khamsin is a spacious, luxurious two-seater with a beautifully upholstered and commodious parcel shelf behind the driver and passenger. That’s in addition to the large rear luggage space beneath an almost entirely glass hatch, the latter of which contributes greatly to excellent 360 degree visibility.

The adjustable reach, padded three-spoke steering wheel with trident badge has no direct mechanical connection to the front wheels under normal operation, as it utilizes Citroën’s ingenious self-centering hydraulic DIRAVI system. Developed by Maserati’s French owners of the time and first seen in the otherworldly Maserati-powered Citroën SM, DIRAVI was the world’s first production variable assistance power steering system.

Fascinatingly, even the power seats and pop-up headlights are hydraulic. Air conditioning, power windows, and full leather upholstery were standard.

Mechanical

Riding atop elegant and sophisticated four-wheel double-wishbone suspension, the Khamsin was praised in contemporary reports for its stable, neutral, yet quick-witted, agile handling combined with good ride quality.

Rated at 320 hp and 355 lb-ft of torque, the Khamsin’s 4.9 liter, quad cam, quad carbureted, dry-sump V8 provided supercar level performance for the era, including 0-60 mph in just over six seconds and 170 flat-out.

This example is fitted with the optional 3-speed Borg Warner automatic transmission–a 5-speed manual ZF gearbox was standard.

History

This car is sold with limited historical documentation.

Summary

One of the scarcest and most exotic GT cars of its era–or indeed any era–the Khamsin is also one of Maestro Gandini’s finest pieces of industrial design work. This example represents an extremely rare opportunity to add one to your collection.

Estimated $20,000 - $30,000.
