Background

2007 saw Italian luxury vehicle manufacturer Maserati release the GranTurismo, it was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.

The car was designed by Jason Castriota who worked for famous Italian design house Pininfarina. The GranTurismo holds the unbeaten record for going from design to production in an amazing nine months. The reasoning behind the speedy development was Ferrari had kept the design for the next Maserati coupe to themselves when the Fiat Chrysler Group took over, that design became the Ferrari Californina.

Double wishbones at the front and a multi-link suspension setup to the rear make the GranTurismo a pleasure to drive. The powerful 4.2 litre V8 is used alongside the 6-speed automatic gearbox used in the Ferrari F430. The transaxle layout gives the GranTurismo a 47/53 weight distribution which was to enhance the driving experience, and importantly, one you can drive and enjoy on a daily basis should you wish.

Overview

Registered on the 3rd March 2010, this lovely Maserati Granturismo 4.2 has covered approximately 4,500 miles whilst in the ownership of the seller. The seller purchased the 2 owner Maserati in June 2017, with around 71,000 miles on the clock. Since then, in the 4 year ownership, it’s safe to say it’s not being used to its full potential.

Since he bought the car, the seller, although not giving the car much use, has spent a considerable amount making sure everything is up to spec and working just as it should, which has cost in the region of an eye watering £20,000. Some of the parts have included a new ECU, (the old one was causing intermittent alarm triggers) and the air conditioning has had a new condenser. It is safe to say now that all the little niggles have been sorted and the car is ready to be enjoyed.

Exterior

Finished in the lovely Blu Nettuno Metallic, the Maserati is nicely finished. There are some odd bits and bobs in the way of stone chips and the odd little dink but nothing too drastic, it is an honest car with nothing to hide.

Starting at the front, the huge open mouth grille is all straight with no bent bars, there is some slight tarnishing to the finish of the chrome. The bumper itself does have a few age and mileage related stone chips, but nothing out of the ordinary. The lights on the Maserati are free from cracks and also the fog lights have escaped any damage. The bonnet aligns well with the grille and wing rails.

Pininfarina certainly got the styling right with the Granturismo, the lines flow amazingly well over the car and it looks superb. Ask Ferrari, the California is extremely similar. From the side the doors align nice and uniform, highlighted with chrome trim, this all nice and bright around the wing vents, window surrounds and door handles with no issues. The glass on the car all looks as you would expect, with no noticeable scratches. A couple of points to mention: the driver's door does have a knock right on the edge and the passenger side rear arch has received some paintwork. This was after an incident where a blow out resulted in the tyre flapping about and catching the edge of the wheel arch.

To the rear, the tailgate aligns straight, the lights are free from any cracks. The standard Maserati script badge is bright and clean with no tarnishing. Down below the bumper has parking sensors and is scuff free, followed by the quad tailpipes that the 4.2 sings from. The wheels are all in relatively good condition, with just the odd scuff here and there. A quick refurbish would have them looking like new in no time. The tyres are approximately just under half worn apart from the left rear, which is new following the blow out incident.

Interior

Luxury is the word you are looking for as you open the door of the Maserati. There's plenty of cream leather, with Maserati embossed headrests, which is all in a nice tidy appearance. The driver's seat is in good condition with no noticeable wear to the bolsters, the passenger seat is in the same condition. To the left of you is the centre armrest. This does have some slight wear to the stitching in the leather, where previous owners have been quite happy and laid back sitting there with their arm resting as they cruise along. There is some slight wear on the sill as you get in and out of the low seats which is quite normal on a low seated car.

The steering wheel is in good condition with no real wear to the leather or the buttons and paddle shifters. Just behind, the instruments show the odometer reading of 75,519 and there are no warning lights displayed. The switchgear is all in excellent condition with no wear to the lettering on them. Across the dash is the clock which does have some very slight scuffing to the bezel along with the dash panel surrounding it. Lower down, the factory fit Sat nav and CD player is working as it should. Below that are the controls for the heating and air conditioning, which is working correctly thanks to the new condenser. The gear lever is a little shiny but not showing any real wear.

The rear seat is excellent and doesn't look like it’s had much use in it’s 11 year life, as are the carpets throughout the Maserati. The headlining is nice and clean, there is a small section on the rear quarter that looks like it has come unstuck just above the seatbelt. Into the luggage area, this is again very clean with all the panels in place. The original tyre inflator is present in the Maserati case along with the tool kit, which is about 95% complete.

Mechanical

Fitted with the 4.2 litre V8, which was developed in conjunction with Ferrari, the GranTurismo produced 399bhp and 339 ft-lb of torque at 4,750rpm. Coupled to a 6-speed automatic gearbox, the GranTurismo is certainly no slouch with a 0-60 mph of 5.2 seconds.

Under the engine bay is well presented. Whilst there's not a lot to see because of the plastic engine covers, what you can see is clean with no signs of any leaks from the top or the underside of the V8. One thing to point out is the bonnet catch does slip a little and closing it to lock down is sometimes a bit fiddly.

The Grand tourer drives lovely with no issues to report. The 4.2 fires up straight away and sounds amazing through the four tailpipes and even better when you step on the loud pedal! The car pulls well through all the gears which are a nice and smooth change. There are no untoward noises coming from either the engine or the transmission.

The underside of the Masterati is generally very clean, with just some surface rust to the suspension components and subframes, as you would expect from a vehicle of this age.

History

What a history file! The Maserati has a full history and all the receipts are there. The seller has invested £20,000 in labour and parts over the four-year ownership, with the last invoice coming in at £7,300. As mentioned, lots of new parts from ECU, Condenser, wheel bearings, brakes, basically if it needed, it’s had it.

The Maserati has retained 2 sets of keys, the owner's manual and also the service booklet which is stamped up until the last service on 4th October 2020 at 74,680. There is MoT on the car which is valid until the 7th December 2021.

Summary

Italian styling from one of the most famous styling houses, Pininfarina, coupled with an engine which was developed alongside Ferrari, a 6-speed F430 gearbox with paddle shift and you have a match made in heaven.

It combines luxury and performance and will be a pleasure to own for the next owner. There is the odd stone chip and small dent on the edge of the driver's door, but that is surely offset by the serious amount of money that has been spent on this 2010 Maserati GranTurismo 4.2, making sure it's just right!

We estimate the Italian Grand Tourer will bring in the region of £17,500 - £21,000.
