Background

The Maserati name, to those in the know, means luxury, power, beautiful Italian styling and engineering coupled with a passionate and stylish customer base. The 4200 GT was a turning point for the brand as it was one of the first cars developed and released under the ownership of Ferrari, taking full control in 1999, making Maserati its luxury division.

The 4200 GT replaced the 3200 GT with the numbers denoting the increase in engine displacement from 3.2 L to 4.2 L. The new 4.2 L Ferrari engine replaced the 3.2 L twin turbo charged unit, whilst power figures improved from the 365 BHP from the 3.2 L to 385 BHP from the 4.2 L naturally aspirated unit.

The bodyshell of the 4200 GT was based heavily on the predecessor, with slight design tweaks, namely the loss of the boomerang rear lights in exchange for some more conventional units to satiate the American market with which the 4200 GT heralded the return of Maserati after an 11-year hiatus.

With the car’s beautifully sleek body design, that has aged like a fine wine, being entrusted to long time Maserati collaborator Giorgetto Guigiaro coupled with a bonefide Ferrari V8 naturally aspirated engine, luscious interior and some exceptionally good handling, the 4200 GT is surely a firm favourite when looking to scratch the itch of the need for some modern classic Italian exotica.

Overview

The example offered here is a 2002 registered car with the favoured paddle shift gearbox, which is an F1 Cambiocorsa style offering, doing away with the need for the clutch pedal. Having a genuine Ferrari V8 up front, some very trick suspension to keep it on the road and the power being sent to the rear, it’s hard to argue with that recipe.

Having had 4 previous owners, the current owner has enjoyed the vehicle for a year and a half whilst only adding 107 miles since its last MoT, the current MoT is valid until 15/03/2022. Judging by the service history, which is comprehensive, this car has had a significant amount being spent on it recently.

The current owner has cared for this car and even given it a full valet recently, they feel it is now time to move the Ferrari engined convertible on as they reduce their collection size due to the current unpredictability of the world climate, in light of recent events.

Exterior

Finished in Grigio Touring silver bodywork with Bordeaux red interior and hood to match, the condition of the car on the outside is very good indeed, with fewer stone chip ‘wear and tear’ that you’d expect from a 19-year-old car. The pictures do show a minor car park ding above the rear passenger side wheel arch, but it’s so minor its almost not worth mentioning, however in the interest of being thorough and honest we shall. If that is the worst the outside has to show then this is a very promising outlook, all shut lines from the doors, boot and bonnet are consistent and tight, confirming the care this car has been afforded.

The fabric roof is also in good condition save for some fading of the colour and another minor knick above the driver side window as well as some slight fraying of the stitching. The rear window panel looks to have some blurring from repeated folding but again for a 19-year-old car, it has held up remarkably well, confirming the impeccable build quality. The owner notes that the discoloration of the carpet in the hood storage area appears to be some dirt from when the roof was retracted and should, they assure me, wipe clean.

Sitting on its original 18-inch, 15 spoke alloys which again are in superb condition with no scuffing or lacquer peel to be seen. The owner has explained the reason for the lack of spare is down to the inordinate cost but has kindly put together a tool kit should it be needed, along with some ‘run-flat’ tyre foam.

Interior

The Bordeaux red leather upholstery inside of this car is a beautiful contrast the exterior colour and as with the rest of the car, it reflects the care it has received. The only wear and tear areas to draw your attention to would be the driver’s side outer most seat bolster which has some dehydration of the leather, this could perhaps be brought back up to scratch with some leather feed or some dye.

The steering wheel and dashboard show no signs of heavy wear which falls in line with the quality of the leather from the manufacturer. The centre console however is showing signs of use from the switches having their labelling slightly worn, however it’s still very clear as to what each one does so shouldn’t cause concern. The owner also reports no malfunction with the electricals throughout the car which is welcome news on a luxury Italian sports car.

Continuing with the theme of care, the door shuts and sills are in good condition, with only one trim clip letting the side down on the driver’s door sill. These however are often universal clips available for a few pence at local parts dealers or via online stores.

Lastly for the interior, the carpets are in fantastic condition with over mats being used to protect the underneath fabric, the handbrake gaiter is also in good condition as is the rest of the armrest area. The top of the dash is not cracked or split, and the A-pillar covers are very presentable as well. The inside of the convertible roof is also free of any damage or wear and looks presentable and clean.

Mechanical

Viewing the car from the underneath, there is some surface, superficial rust blooms, these however fall in line with what you’d expect from a 19 year old car used on the salted roads of the UK.

The underside looks to be in great condition all things considered, the photos do show what looks to be a repaired crack in the front plastic undertray, which being fixed should not cause any issues.

Underneath the bonnet, the main attraction of this car is presented in its glory, with that naturally aspirated intake taking pride of place, feeding all 8 ravenous cylinders. The engine has some paint flaking off the fuel rail and cylinder covers which could be easily remedied with a trip to a local paint and body shop for some new high heat resistant crinkle red to give the Italian powerplant some of its lustre back. The hoses, pipes and rubber components all look to be in good condition and there are no signs of any oil leaks or staining in the bay or on the components. The plastic covers framing the engine all look to be in good order too.

History

The car comes with a comprehensive service history, with stamps in the service book dated up to 2019 all from Maserati specialists so you know it has been in good hands. The service record even shows that the engine had a partial rebuild in 2008, which should give buyers confidence of its longevity.

Receipts also confirm that the wheels were refurbished in 2013 along with an exhaust refresh and a change of clutch. The car has clearly had no expense spared during its time on the road, all positive signs that this car has been well looked after and should continue to bring joy to future owners.

Bidders should note this car comes with a clean history check and two keys in addition to all mentioned above.

Summary

If you’re in the market for an understated Italian sports convertible that stands out, with higher exclusivity than its GT coupé counterpart, the Spyder should certainly be atop your list of potentials.

The first car to be developed during the takeover by Ferrari brought with it new technology which this car benefits from. The addition of the ‘skyhook’ electronic dampening system, the F1 style paddle shift manual gearbox and 385bhp being sent to the rear wheels, gives this car the potential savagery and handling poise afforded to Ferrari models, whilst enveloping you in luxury from the superbly finished leather interior.

In essence, you get the best of both worlds here, a Ferrari powerplant and soundtrack, with the luxury often omitted from the parent company’s road race inspired models. You also benefit from reliability as owner’s records have attested to these cars being dependable so long as they’ve been looked after by specialists which this model certainly has.

Another bonus is the value of these cars, a very cost-effective way to sample a Ferrari powered convertible that takes Grand Touring in its stride. We predict the values of these cars will hold in future due to their significance in the brands history as well as their popularity. Now could be the time to reward yourself with a well looked after example.

Our estimate for this car is £17,000 - £24,000.
