Background
The Maserati name, to those in the know, means luxury, power, beautiful Italian styling and engineering coupled with a passionate and stylish customer base. The 4200 GT was a turning point for the brand as it was one of the first cars developed and released under the ownership of Ferrari, taking full control in 1999, making Maserati its luxury division.
The 4200 GT replaced the 3200 GT with the numbers denoting the increase in engine displacement from 3.2 L to 4.2 L. The new 4.2 L Ferrari engine replaced the 3.2 L twin turbo charged unit, whilst power figures improved from the 365 BHP from the 3.2 L to 385 BHP from the 4.2 L naturally aspirated unit.
The bodyshell of the 4200 GT was based heavily on the predecessor, with slight design tweaks, namely the loss of the boomerang rear lights in exchange for some more conventional units to satiate the American market with which the 4200 GT heralded the return of Maserati after an 11-year hiatus.
With the car’s beautifully sleek body design, that has aged like a fine wine, being entrusted to long time Maserati collaborator Giorgetto Guigiaro coupled with a bonefide Ferrari V8 naturally aspirated engine, luscious interior and some exceptionally good handling, the 4200 GT is surely a firm favourite when looking to scratch the itch of the need for some modern classic Italian exotica.
