Background

Maserati is one of the all time great Italian marques that embodies style, power and luxury. Its rich sporting heritage has always been a constant source of inspiration and passion, with the glory days of the 1950s and greats such as Fangio and Moss, forever cementing the Maserati name in the annals of sporting history.

By the late 1990s the Italian brand had started to turn a corner after decades of turbulence and the launch of the stunning Maserati 3200 GT in 1998 announced the marques return to the world stage. Building on the success of its V8 twin turbo powered GT, Maserati unveiled its successor the 4200 GT in 2001. By now the trident brand was safely in the hands of Ferrari, who took control of the firm in 1999. They supplied the new 4.2 litre Ferrari naturally aspirated V8 engine, which replaced the Maserati 3.2 litre twin turbo V8 powertrain.

Giorgetto Giugiaro’s fabulous styling of the original 3200 shape, which provided the platform for the new 4200 GT, was tweaked and revised. And the model lineup now included a Spyder, which offered Maserati fans the Italian V8 convertible experience.

Overview

This 2002 Maserati 4200 Spyder is very familiar to us here at The Market as it was previously sold by us in 2021. We are delighted to welcome this gorgeous Italian convertible back and are honoured to be given the opportunity to offer it to its next custodian.

Finished in the attractive combination of Grigio Touring silver over a Bordeaux red interior and matching hood, this 4200 Spyder was first registered in January 2002.

Powered by the glorious Ferrari V8 with the paddle shift gearbox, this fine example has had 5 owners from new. Even though the current owner has not owned his Maserati for long, he has taken good care of the Spyder and addressed a number of mechanical and cosmetic details, which we will get to in a moment. Despite thoroughly enjoying the glorious V8 soundtrack, he simply hasn’t used the car enough and has decided to pass it on to the next custodian.

Exterior

Today the Spyder presents just as well as it did when we first offered it for sale last year. The seller states that the car remains in good condition and has covered less that 900 miles in his ownership.

One exterior feature he attended to since acquiring the Spyder was the fabric hood, which he had detailed. This deep clean has helped to revive the hood and it is now much more presentable. There is some colour fading evident in the photos and one or two areas of wear, so long term the new owner may want to renew the hood to return it to its factory condition.

The Maserati’s 18” alloy wheels are in good condition and have benefited from the addition of two new front tyres, with an invoice on file from August last year to support this.

Interior

The rich Bordeaux red leather contrasts superbly against the silver exterior and adds a real sense of luxury and style to the interior. It is simply a lovely place to sit.

One area that the current owner focussed his attention on when he acquired the car was the interior trim. Maserati and Ferrari trim plastics of this era are notorious for suffering from the “sticky button” issue, which makes the dash buttons and plastics unpleasant to use. And it just looks scruffy… not what you want from your Italian luxury GT experience. The current owner has taken care of this problem, with all the interior trim plastics refurbished by specialists StickyPlastics at a cost of £1,500. The invoice is on file for this and the end result has been a transformation of the interior.

The current owner also added an aftermarket wind deflector which will come with the car.

Mechanical

Under the bonnet resides the 385 BHP naturally aspirated 4.2 litre Ferrari V8. The owner states that it always starts on the button and it both drives and sounds fantastic.

The engine bay presents as it did last year and is in very clean condition. The distinctive red crinkle paint is wearing on cylinder head and a refresh here would certainly smarten the engine area.

One upgrade that the owner has lavished on the Maserati is two new Larini low pressure catalytic converters. The cars original catalytic convertors were found to be in poor condition and a new Larini exhaust system was sourced at a cost of £1,830. The total cost of the works was £3,800.72 with an invoice on file from September 2021, which confirms the list of works carried out by the Italian specialists NJS. The owner states that the new Larini catalytic converts have improved the cars performance and enhanced the V8 engine soundtrack.

Other items taken care of in his ownership were the brakes, which were renewed at a cost of £1,007.23 in May this year, also by NJS.

The most recent invoice from August this year details the fitting of new CAT temperature sensors with the total works coming to £876.

History

The car retains its comprehensive service history and has continued to be looked after by Maserati specialists in the current owners custodianship. Although he has only owned the car for a short period of time, he has taken care of a good number of issues, which will ensure peace of mind the next owner.

Summary

The Maserati 4200 Spyder is a stunning Italian convertible that ticks a lot of boxes. It is a real head turner that both looks and sounds the part, with the mighty Ferrari V8 offering that true exotic sports car experience.

This luxurious sports convertible offers a lot of car for the money and is a cost effective way into Ferrari powered GT ownership. And with Christmas just a few weeks away, maybe it is time to treat yourself to that Italian V8 convertible you’ve always promised yourself.

We estimate this car to fetch between £12,000 - £17,000 in auction.
