Background
Maserati is one of the all time great Italian marques that embodies style, power and luxury. Its rich sporting heritage has always been a constant source of inspiration and passion, with the glory days of the 1950s and greats such as Fangio and Moss, forever cementing the Maserati name in the annals of sporting history.
By the late 1990s the Italian brand had started to turn a corner after decades of turbulence and the launch of the stunning Maserati 3200 GT in 1998 announced the marques return to the world stage. Building on the success of its V8 twin turbo powered GT, Maserati unveiled its successor the 4200 GT in 2001. By now the trident brand was safely in the hands of Ferrari, who took control of the firm in 1999. They supplied the new 4.2 litre Ferrari naturally aspirated V8 engine, which replaced the Maserati 3.2 litre twin turbo V8 powertrain.
Giorgetto Giugiaro’s fabulous styling of the original 3200 shape, which provided the platform for the new 4200 GT, was tweaked and revised. And the model lineup now included a Spyder, which offered Maserati fans the Italian V8 convertible experience.
