Background

The Maserati Coupe, or as it’s better known, the 4200, is stylish grand tourer that picks up from where the 3200 left off. Whilst the interior traces much of its origin to the 3200, the dramatic change for the newer model lays underneath the Italdesign crafted body.

Whilst the 3200 made use of a bi-turbo 3.2 litre V8 producing 270hp, interestingly for the 4200, Maserati went in favour for a larger (4.2 litres) naturally aspirated V8 (with Ferrari influence) offering a much-improved 390hp along with 450Nm of torque. Speaking of Ferrari, this engine is the same as used in the Ferrari F430 – the same goes for the transmission, suspension, and software.

This power is fed to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual, or for those looking for something more race inspired – the Cambiocorsa. Confused? That’s Italian for ‘Race Shift’ and is an automated manual similar to Ferraris used at the time and is inspired by the world of Formula One. The Coupe version is able to get to 62mph in 4.9 seconds, whilst the Spyder will hit the same speed in 5.0 seconds.

The two-seater convertible, ‘Spyder’ was the first model to be introduced, which took place at the 2001 Frankfurt Auto Show, whilst the four-seater ‘Coupe’ had its time in the limelight a year later at the 2002 Detroit Motor Show. Shortly after being unveiled, the Spyder was awarded the Best GT by Forbes magazine – not a bad accolade to have, is it?

If you opted for the four-seater coupe (like the one available for auction here) you had the genuine opportunity to house four adults in luxurious comfort thanks to a wheelbase that is around 3 inches longer than a Jaguar XK8 and around 12 inches longer than a Porsche 911.

Overview

The example we are offering was registered in March 2004 and has just two former owners. As well as having a low number of owners, it’s also covered little miles – less than 38,000 in fact. The car has recently had an MOT, which it passed with a few advisories - mostly corrosion to the coil springs and the front subframe, but these areas are no need for serious concern. The car has been treated to a respray, so it looks as good as it would have done when it rolled off the production line in Modena.

It's not had just any respray, though, it was carried out by none other than Ferrari, at the grand sum of around £11,000. That may have been carried out 6 years ago, but thanks to ceramic coating and the fact the car is kept inside (has been since 2004), it still looks amazing, helping this 4200 stand out from the crowd. It’s also worth noting that the previous owner never took it out on a wet day, and the car has been lovingly cared for by its current Goodwood Road Racing Club member owner, who has owned it for over a decade.

The owner bought the car as he is a lover of Italian exotica and before this had an Alfa Romeo GT V6, but after having a passenger ride in friend’s Aston Martin DB9 V12, he yearned for more cylinders. He spent four years getting the car to a high standard, and for the last 6-7 years it has presented little issue – peace of mind for the next loving owner. The reason for sale is because he has acquired a Shelby Daytona and unfortunately, he does not have space for both cars – not a bad problem to have!

It comes with service history, the last of which was by Dick Lovett in March 2021. Dick Lovett carried out a major service using Shell Helix racing engine oil, and a brake fluid change was completed as well. It’s wearing high quality tyres in the way of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 and Continental ContiSport Contact 5 rubber.

As you can see from the photos, the car comes with original stickers, documentation in the original folder, , two tool kits (very rare to find) and also two keys. To help protect the Ferrari-applied paint the car also has a Maserati branded custom indoor car cover.

Exterior

The exterior is where this car shines – quite literally! The Grigio Alfieri paintwork is in fine condition as the car has Italian grand tourer has been treated to a respray. The standard-fit 18” alloys are in great condition, having been refinished in custom flecked silver, and are wrapped with premium, high-quality tyres. The glassware is in fantastic condition, as are the lights, which are free of cracks or tarnishing.

As you can see, the trident badge on the front is free-standing, as opposed to being mounted on the grille, meaning this is a pre-facelift version. Like the rest of the exterior, the chromework looks to be spotless, with V8 badges sitting proudly on the front wings.

The styling is stylish and classy, with some subtle features to give a hint of the performance that the 4200 is able to offer. There are the aforementioned 18” alloys, and if you turn your attention to the rear, you’ll found four exhaust pipes that will produce a sound that is to die for. Also at the rear, you’ll find parking sensors, which will make parking easier and will give you less chance of dinging the freshly painted bodywork!

Interior

For anyone that has owned a 3200, the 4200 will offer a cabin that is very familiar. The interior was designed by Enrico Fumia, and buyers had a choice of 10 colours for the leather. This example comes with a classic and classy looking black affair, which has aged well. There is a bit of wear on the driver’s seat right bolster, but other than that, the cow hide is fighting fit when it comes to condition. It’s also worth noting that the seats have recently been cleaned and have been given a treatment.

It's not just the seating that has been treated to leather; much of the interior is lavishly appointed with the material, making it a premium and special place to be. There is also glossy black detailing as well as silver and black dials within the instrument cluster that look as timeless as they do stylish. The Piano Black trim pieces are a unique feature and was chosen by the current owner to make the car more modern – the owner describes the original trim as dated – you won’t see this design on any other 4200.

The switchgear is in good condition, although the current owner has conceded one of the buttons is sticky – a common issue for this car, he says there are companies that can rectify this without breaking the bank. There is a bit of wear on some of the switches and the interior vents, but on the whole the interior is well appointed. It’s not short of features either, as you’ll find goodies heated front seats, navigation, climate control, phone connectivity, and electrically adjustable seats with memory functions.

The rear seats look superb and look as if they have never been used, although this car is more practical than the XKR and 911 of the time, so if you want to entertain passengers in the rear you can do so. The steering wheel is free of any noticeable wear, as is the handbrake.

Mechanical

This classy grand tourer is powered by a Ferrari/Maserati 4.2 litre V8, which feeds its power to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual, or in the case of this example, the 6-speed ‘Cambiocorsa’, which is an automated manual and very similar to what Ferrari were using at the time. Open the bonnet and you’ll see the V8 in all its glory as well as the original stickers, which are present and correct.

The engine bay looks extremely tidy, mainly because that 4.2 V8 takes up virtually the entirety of the area, and is treated to bold red rocker covers to denote the performance within.

Moving to the underneath of the car, there is some corrosion present, but nothing that should cause too much concern at this moment in time.

The 4200 features light alloy double wishbone suspension, with a front layout that’s designed to stop the front-end pitching forwards under braking. The chassis also features front and rear anti-roll bars, with rear suspension that’s been designed to offer balanced handling. Adaptive dampers were available as an option and the system is known as ‘Skyhook’.

This particular example has a bespoke exhaust system that took 16 hours to build and has been tuned to exude the music offered by the Ferrari F430. The exhaust is a custom manifold back build with cross-flow pipes; the four 400-count catalytic converters were replaced with two 200 count sports cats. Not only does it improve the sound, the system is more free-flowing, allowing for an increase of power – 420bhp.

The standard fit Ferodo brake discs aren’t considered to be the greatest, prompting the owner to have custom brake discs made, which were composed using higher carbon steel and sit between EBC YellowStuff pads, which the owner swears by.

History

This Maserati 4200 comes with service history and the last one was carried out by Dick Lovett last year in which a major service was completed using high quality oil along with a brake fluid change. Before that, the documents show the following servicing:

2005 – Service completed by Charles Hurst, Ferrari Specialist

2006 – Service completed by Bob Houghton, Ferrari Specialist

2007 – Service completed by JCT 600

2010 – Service completed by Dave Walton Specialist Car Services

2013 – Service completed by Dick Lovett, which consisted of an oil and filter change, pollen filter replacement, new spark plugs, and a new auxiliary belt. The steering rack boots were also changed in order to get the car through the MOT.

2015 – Service completed by Forza GB

2018 – Service completed by Dick Lovett, which was an oil change, pollen filter replacement and a brake fluid change. The transmission oil and engine coolant was also replaced, along with new spark plugs.

The gearbox actuator was replaced in 2013 following a fault selecting gears, and the work was carried out by Dick Lovett. The clutch was also replaced due to it being 89% worn and slipping. In 2016 the front and rear pads and discs were replaced along with new rear suspensions arms and D bushes for the rear anti-roll bar – this was completed by Forza GB.

Summary

With an estimate of £12,000-£16,000 this is a lot of car for the money, and is a good example with a superb exterior condition and low miles. Then there’s the soundtrack courtesy of the Ferrari/Maserati V8 which is worth the money alone, thanks to a noise that’s got more than enough to stir the soul.

This example comes with good service history, 2 keys, original tool kit, a fresh paintjob by Ferrari themselves, and an equally fresh MOT. On top of this, it has a bespoke exhaust system, a more modern interior, better braking performance and more power, making it a very strong example for this model, and not one to be missed.
