The Maserati Coupe, or as it’s better known, the 4200, is a stylish grand tourer that picks up from where the 3200 left off. Whilst the interior traces much of its origin to the 3200, the dramatic change for the newer model lays underneath the Italdesign crafted body.

Whilst the 3200 made use of a bi-turbo 3.2 litre V8 producing 370hp, interestingly for the 4200, Maserati went in favour for a larger (4.2 litres) naturally aspirated V8 (with Ferrari influence) offering a much-improved 390hp along with 450Nm of torque. Speaking of Ferrari, this engine is the same as used in the Ferrari F430 – the same goes for the transmission, suspension, and software.

This power is fed to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual, or for those looking for something more race-inspired – the Cambiocorsa. Confused? That’s Italian for ‘Race Shift’ and is an automated manual similar to Ferraris used at the time and is inspired by the world of Formula One. The Coupe version is able to get to 62mph in 4.9 seconds, whilst the Spyder will hit the same speed in 5.0 seconds.

The two-seater convertible, ‘Spyder’ was the first model to be introduced, which took place at the 2001 Frankfurt Auto Show, whilst the four-seater ‘Coupe’ had its time in the limelight a year later at the 2002 Detroit Motor Show. Shortly after being unveiled, the Spyder was awarded the Best GT by Forbes magazine – not a bad accolade to have, is it?

If you opted for the four-seater coupe (like the one available for auction here) you had the genuine opportunity to house four adults in luxurious comfort, thanks to a wheelbase that is around 3 inches longer than a Jaguar XK8 and around 12 inches longer than a Porsche 911.

Overview

The example we are offering was registered in September 2003 and has 6 former keepers. Since its production in 2003 it has covered almost 85,000 miles, with an MoT that will cover the next owner up until July this year. The last MoT was clean, and throughout the life of the car the MoT history hasn’t thrown up any nasty surprises, which should come as a reassurance for whoever has the keys for this sporty trident-badged grand tourer next.

The car does have some age-related marks and wear, but it certainly hasn’t been neglected. As you can see from the photos, the car comes with lots of invoices, and between 2014 and 2019 around £43,000 has been spent on this example, so rest assured, it has been looked after. The car also comes with the original booklets and even the original Maserati tool kit as well to offer better originality.

The car comes with plenty of service stamps, with a mix of main dealer, independents and specialists. The last service took place at Kennington Motors Ltd last July in which a small service was carried out with Maserati genuine oil filter and high-grade 10w60 engine oil. An MoT was carried out at the same time as well.

Exterior

This example is finished in a silver that is as elegant as it is timeless, helping to show off the beautiful lines of the body. Given the age and mileage of the car, it’s in good condition, with some age-related marks. There is some light scuffing to the nearside front bumper and all of the 18” alloys would benefit from a refurb, but the chromework is in good condition, as are the lights and glasswork. As you can see, the trident badge on the front is free-standing, as opposed to being mounted on the grille, meaning this is a pre-facelift version.

The design is stylish and classy, but there are some subtle features to give a hint of the performance that the 4200 is able to offer. There are the aforementioned 18” alloys, and if you turn your attention to the rear, you’ll find four exhaust pipes that will produce a sound that is to die for. Also at the rear, you’ll find parking sensors, which will make parking easier, so you’ll have less chance of accidentally backing the beautiful bodywork into something you shouldn’t!

Interior

For anyone that has owned a 3200, the 4200 will offer a cabin that is very familiar. The interior was designed by Enrico Fumia, and buyers had a choice of 10 colours for the leather. This example features sophisticated navy blue leather, which has stood the test of time well. There is some wear on the driver’s seat bolster as well as little cracking, other than that, the seats are in good condition. It is worth noting that the buttons for the electronic adjustment for the driver’s seat are missing/damaged.

It's not just the seating that has been treated to leather; much of the interior is lavishly appointed with the material, making it a premium and special place to be. The switchgear is in fair condition with some buttons showing age-related wear, as do the interior vents, but on the whole, the interior is well-appointed. It’s not short of features either, as you’ll find goodies heated front seats, navigation, climate control, phone connectivity, and electrically adjustable seats with memory functions.

The rear seats are in good condition and look as if they have been rarely used, although this car is more practical than the XKR and 911 of the time, so if you want to entertain passengers in the rear you can do so.

Mechanical

This classy grand tourer is powered by a Ferrari/Maserati 4.2 litre V8, which feeds its power to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual, or in the case of this example, the 6-speed ‘Cambiocorsa’, which is an automated manual and very similar to what Ferrari was using at the time. Open the bonnet and you’ll see the V8 in all its glory as well as the original stickers, which are present and correct.

The engine bay looks tidy, mainly because that 4.2 V8 takes up virtually the entirety of the area, and is treated to bold red rocker covers to denote the performance within.

Moving to the underneath of the car, there is some corrosion present, but nothing that should cause too much concern at this moment in time – the MoT history should reflect that.

The 4200 features light alloy double wishbone suspension, with a front layout that’s designed to stop the front-end pitching forwards under braking. The chassis also features front and rear anti-roll bars, with rear suspension that’s been designed to offer balanced handling. Adaptive dampers were available as an option and the system is known as ‘Skyhook’.

History

This example was registered in September 2003 and has covered almost 85,000 miles with 6 former keepers. It comes with the original booklets and the tool kit. Current MoT is valid until July and that is also when it’s due a service as well. Last service it had was a small one using a genuine oil filter and Mobil 1 10W60 oil at Kennington Motors Ltd. Previous owners haven’t been afraid to spend money on this car as between 2014 and 2019 it’s reported that around £43,000 has been spent, and as you can see there is a lot of paperwork to come with the car.

Summary

Whilst this may not be the most pristine example money can buy, with an estimate of £7,000-£10,000, it could work out to be a more affordable one. As much as the cosmetics may need a little work, this example should be mechanically sound and could prove to be a good way to get yourself into a modern Italian classic grand tourer with a thumping V8 under the bonnet.

What this example offers is a chance to slip yourself into a sumptuous cabin that not only offers high luxury but also high comfort. Add that to a 4.2 litre naturally aspirated v8 engine with Ferrari influence and there’s a lot to whet the appetite!
