Background

Introduced to replace its predecessor the 3200 GT, the 4200 GT was an evolution rather than a new model with an increase in engine displacement from 3.2L to 4.2L. First unveiled in 2001, the introduction of the Spyder model in 2002 marked the brand’s return to the north American market after 11 years.

The main changes for the 4200 could be found under the skin, with the main difference being the 4.2 litre naturally aspirated V8, used in the F430, replacing the 3.2 litre bi-turbo V8 of the 3200, this bumps power from 270 bhp to 390 bhp.

The gearbox that Italian powerhouse is mated to is a 6 speed automatic manual dubbed Cambiocorsa or ‘Race Shift’, meaning the car gets to 60 mph from a standing start in 4.9 seconds.

The four-seat coupe as auctioned here had a wheelbase around 3 inches longer than the similar Jaguar XK8 and 12 inches longer than the Porsche 911. This means that it is physically possible to have someone sat behind the driver in the rear seat, giving the whole family the chance to experience the joys of the 4200 GT.

Overview

The Maserati comes back to us after the current owner purchased the car for his son for completing his PHD, a fine reward for an admirable achievement I’m sure you’ll agree. Unfortunately, life had other plans and the car has not seen the use it deserves, and the decision was made to re-auction the car with us.

First registered in 2006 and benefitting from a low number of owners and low mileage, that’s two big boxes ticked already. In fact, since we last auctioned the car in September 2022, the car has only done around 500 miles.

The Maserati has also had a huge amount of work and finance spent on it to make sure it is presented in its absolute best condition. One such example is the full respray done by Ferrari at a grand old sum of £11,000 6 years ago, which means it should still be as sharp as it was coming off the factory floor in the early 2000s. The previous owner who commissioned the re-spray, had the car ceramic coated and even kept it inside during his decade long, if that isn’t love, I’m not sure what is.

The car comes with original stickers, documentation in Maserati folder, two tool kits and two keys and a custom indoor car cover branded with the Maserati badge.

Exterior

It’s been 7 years since the car had its full respray and the protection and care afforded to the car shows in its current condition. There are some minor marks around the car, but you’ll have to squint to see them so in reality it’s in fantastic condition.

Wheels and tyres are in good condition, there seems to be no curbing at all, and as mentioned the front tyres are brand new. All four tyres are Michelin Pilots. Chrome work around the car is in good condition too and the glass is in good condition too.

The Maserati is a stylish, handsome car without being too flamboyant or over the top, it has a subtle class and elegance that really stands out from the crowds. Don’t worry about not being noticed however as, as soon as the V8 fires up and sings its song through those four rear exhaust tips, people won’t be able to help themselves but to sneak a peek.

Interior

Black leather upholstery has been chosen for this example and it serves to continue the subtle class and style when matched to the Grigio Alfieri paintwork on the exterior. Out of the 20 colours available when new, black is a safe and solid choice and one that has and will continue to age well. To be super picky there is some general creasing to the driver’s bolster but nowhere near as much as you’d expect for a car that’s nearly 20 years old. The rest of the interior all looks to be really fresh, and we can’t see anything to point out in terms of issues and we’d encourage you to check the gallery to see for yourself.

Major touch points are free from excessive wear and present in great condition and the switchgear stickiness has reportedly been taken care of too. The original owner was not overly impressed with the factory interior so has commissioned certain pieces, such as the piano black trim pieces.

Interior features heated and electrically adjustable front seats with memory functions, navigation and climate control and phone connectivity. The interior of the Maserati lives up to its promises of comfort, style, and luxury and remains a superb place to be.

Mechanical

Open the bonnet and you’re greeted with a Ferrari derived 4.2 Litre V8 mated to a 6 speed Cambiocorsa automated manual box similar to the ones used in the Maserati’s stablemate Ferrari at the time. Those original stickers mentioned previously are in the engine bay, all present and correct, and the power unit itself looks, visually, to be in great condition.

There is not much more we can comment on in the engine bay as the power unit is so beautifully installed that it almost looks like a framed painting with the plastic covers. From what we can see there are no exposed wires, no cracks in tubing or pipework or evidence of excessive fluid leaks.

We have been fortunate enough to get some excellent pictures of the underneath of the car and from the visual inspection we can see nothing of grave concern, in fact the car is in fantastic condition underneath from the looks of things. The low miles and careful owners are the ones to than for the car’s fantastic condition.

Important things to note are the light alloy double wishbone suspension, front and rear anti-roll bars, adaptive damper system (known as Skyhook) and the bespoke exhaust system which is a custom ‘manifold-back’ build with cross flow pipes and two 200 count sports cats instead of four. It improves the power from its more free flowing design to 420bhp as well as improving sound as a happy side effect.

History

The Maserati comes with a fair amount of paperwork with a good service history by main dealers and specialists. It has been cared for well whilst under the care of its 3 owners and as you can see from the gallery, remains in good condition throughout.

A recent service from Dick Lovett in 2021 is the most recent service and listed below are a few more of the main services completed:

  • 2005 – Service completed by Charles Hurst, Ferrari Specialist
  • 2006 – Service completed by Bob Houghton, Ferrari Specialist
  • 2007 – Service completed by JCT 600
  • 2010 – Service completed by Dave Walton Specialist Car Services
  • 2013 – Service completed by Dick Lovett, which consisted of an oil and filter change, pollen filter replacement, new spark plugs, and a new auxiliary belt. The steering rack boots were also changed in order to get the car through the MOT.
  • 2015 – Service completed by Forza GB
  • 2018 – Service completed by Dick Lovett, which was an oil change, pollen filter replacement and a brake fluid change. The transmission oil and engine coolant was also replaced, along with new spark plugs.

The gearbox actuator was replaced in 2013 as well as the clutch, both these were replaced by Dick Lovett with the receipt present in the pack. 2016 saw the front pads and discs replaced at the same time as new rear suspension arms and D bushes for the rear anti-roll bar, work carried out by Forza GB.

The Maserati has two keys, a current V5c, a valid MOT until 7th June, 2024 and two new front tyres.

Summary

Low miles, low owners, fantastic condition throughout, this Maserati presents as a lot of car for the money, especially considering you get that Ferrari derived V8 engine to provide the thrust and soundtrack to that sublime design.

This particular example ticks a lot of boxes straight off the bat considering the service history, bespoke exhaust, modern interior touches, more power and not to forget the recent Ferrari completed re-spray. All these aspects means this Maserati should not be overlooked as this might just be the bargain of the year.

We estimate this car to fetch between £12,000 - £14,000 in auction.
